Ok, I'm sure this has been asked before, but since we have so many new members, why not ask it again? 😀
Personally, I'd have to say Buffy. A couple years ago I'd indefinitely choose Btvs, but now I'm also learning to love and respect Angel more and more.
I think that Angel want a bit farther and a bit darker than Buffy ever did. It was more complex, and a LOT crazier. It was more intense, and often felt although it was crossing the metaphorical line (in a good way). But I still love Buffy more.
Although Angel went darker and bolder, Buffy was more sentimental. It was extremely metaphorical, and it had several main messages that it stuck with throughout the course of the show. My two favorites are the "you still don't get it do you? It's not about right. It's not about wrong. It's about power." and the "you think you know... what you are... what's to come... you haven't even begun." It held important meanings of life and for the most part was pretty realistic. Everything was a lot more meaningful, and organized. Angel, excluding S5, seemed to be all over the place with a billion plot twists per episode, but Buffy always had a main storyline. It was easier to go along with, and more fun.
Next, relationships:
I love the relationships of BOTH shows: For Btvs we have Spuffy, Tillow, Xanya, Spordelia, Sprusilla, Spillow, Fuffy, Spaith, etc. In Angel we have Fresley, Wilah, Cangel, Dangel, Spangel, Spillyria, Spred, etc.
IMO, Spuffy, Tillow, and Cangel are the three most beautiful, touching 'ships EVER. Xanya's cute, Dangel's intense and deep, Spangel's fun, Spordelia's hott 😀, Fuffy's sexy, Fresley's adorable, Wilah definitely had potential, and all the other 'ships were just plain awesome. Although I love all the 'ships, Ats' seemed over too quickly, and were often overly tragic. Of course, Ats can work the angsty look, but I still feel as though Btvs developed the relationships a lot more.
Also, the Scooby Gang seemed a lot closer than AI every did. You could tell that the scoobies were best friends and really loved each other, whereas there were many times that the people in AI completely betrayed each other.
Character Development:
Alright, so basically I LIKE the Ats characters more, but I LOVE the Buffy characters more.
In Angel, I'm attracted to every character at the start. Cordelia was a gorgeous, genuine, funny young woman, and was extremely lovable. I really started loving and respecting Angel more on his own show, and I thought his character became a lot happier and less annoyingly dramatic and broody. Gunn was hot, and I loved how heroic and intelligent his character became in S5. I wasn't so into Fred until S5, but in S5 I love her so much, she really became an amazing, genius, confident lil' lady. 😀 Wes was great, and it was interesting to see his character develop. But overall I felt that it was easier to relate to the Scooby Gang growing up than AI.
I kinda hate everyone on Buffy, but in a way that "I hate how I love you so". 😀 In the beginning, I couldn't stand any of the characters: Buffy was this whiny, immature, obnoxious, haughty brat that was constantly rejecting her powers, while at the same time making sure that everyone knew how she was the "only one", and nobody else could possibly understand, and how having SUPERPOWERS totally ruined her life as a complete oblivious ditz with no destiny at all... Gah, how can anyone stand listening to her whine and complain about her GIFTS while flaunting herself around?! 😀 Willow was OK, but she was always to shy and insecure for my tastes. Xander was cute, but the way he was always pining over Buffy was seriously annoying.
Really, I found Buffy to be irritating until S5. In S4 she completely ditched her friends for her boring BF (as the phrase goes, she "chose ho's over bros) and never seemed to understand the world around her. She was pretty selfish and self- centered (as most teens are, really 😀 ), and liked to look at the world through "rose colored glasses". Now, I'm sure it sounds like I hate Buffy, but really it's my love for her that makes me so critical. I want her to be the best person that she can be, so I have to accept and understand her faults. But anyway, I started respecting her in S5. She seemed less dependent on her boyfriends (there's nothing that annoys me more than a girl who relies too much on her significant other.) and became a lot more powerful and empathetic, someone who cared more about the people around her. But there were still a lot of times I found her irritating, like when she was getting all pathetic, trying to change herself to makes guys want her. I mean, honestly! There's a lot more to life than dating and sex, and you should NEVER try to change yourself to make someone like you, that way leads to unhappiness. But still, I love how she kinda spread her wings and learned to fly. In Season Six I still found the way she was completely disrespecting Spike and using him for her own benefits annoying, but I still loved her more. You could tell that she was really trying, and was a LOT less self absorbed than she'd been in the beginning. She learned a lot about herself and what it meant to be a slayer, and felt more comfortable and experiential with her darker side. In Season 7 I felt that she was much closer to discovering who she was and what she wanted. Instead of making choices that benefited herself, she was making ones that benefit other. She became a more mature, community- based helped, and had a more clear sense of priorities. She was MUCH stronger, and extremely respectable, IMO. She was motherly and wise, whilst retaining her snappy "Buffy" spark. She let people into her heart instead of driving them out in fear of getting hurt, and was a beautiful, understanding young woman who I really love. 🙂
I also love Willow. At the start she was a sweetie, but much too shy for me, as I've said. In S4 she became more powerful and independent, and stopped hiding in the shadows of her Slayer best friend. She became her own person, instead of just a sidekick. I also LOVED the Tillow 'ship, which helps. It was so so so incredibly touching and beautiful, and really showed what love is all about. But anyway. In S6 I love her even more: A powerful character is a good character IMO. No longer was she an insecure little mouse. She was damn dangerous if she wanted to be, and could definitely hold her own against anyone. Her character was taken a step farther and a step deeper than it had been before, and she became a more interesting and complex person. Finally, in S7, she became the goddess that had infinitive power and control in white magic. 🙂
Xander was never that high in my books. He was OK in the beginning, but his crushes on powerful women (like Buffy) kinda annoyed me. As the years went on, he seemed to become even MORE annoying. He tried to make choices for his friends and was overly protective. He tried to make others want what he wanted, and was too compulsive. He made many stupid choices and always failed to see what was right in front of his nose. But he had some good moments, like his Crayon Speech in Grave. I really loved him in that scene. 😀 Season Seven Xander isn't that bad, I feel for him a lot, and he's pretty funny, but still. 😀 Season 8 Xander's alright too, except for that awful
thing. Corrupting the innocent much? 😀
... I don't care enough about Giles to analyze him. 😀 As for Tara, Oz, Cordy, Kennedy, Spike, and whomever else was a temporary character, I loved them and all (well... except Kennedy), but I don't feel nearly as close to them as I do to the core four. Like, it's really weird since they're fictional characters, but they're like best friends to me, and I love them to death 😀
Overall, I connected with and loved the Btvs characters more than the Angel ones. I loved everyone on Ats, but with Btvs it goes beyond that... although, again, it's seriously weird. 😀
Seasons:
So, I can honestly say that I love Angel seasons/ episodes more than Buffy ones. In many cases, Btvs was badly written, but Angel was always well written. Angel S5 was better than Buffy S7. Angel S4 was better and darker than Buffy S6. Angel S3 was better than Buffy season 3-5. Angel season 2 was better than btvs seasons 2. Angel S1 was better than Buffy S1. Spin the Bottle was WAY better than Tabula Rasa. Granted, Chosen was better than NFA, but that's about it. 😀
But my opinion of this is the same as Buffy S4: I LOVE the individual episodes, but I strongly dislike the overall season. It's the same here: I love Ats seasons and episodes more, but I love Buffy more overall.
Humor:
Angel is, without a doubt, MUCH funnier. I hardly ever find Btvs humorous at all. All the sarcasm and wit just annoys me in the beginning, and it just wasn't particularly funny in the end. Angel, although darker, was always hilarious. It had hilarious moments and completely funny episodes (Like Harm's Way and TGIQ). It can turn pretty much anything into a funny moment. But, still, I connect with Btvs a lot more. 😀
Overall:
Buffy has a much lighter and happier feel about it, and goes deeper and more loving than Angel does. I get this feeling of love and happiness, this glow, whenever I watch it. I love the characters, and I love seeing how our kids grow up into these beautiful adults. Their journey is truly amazing. 😀
Angel is also amazing: Funny, dark, deep, intense, interesting... But I feel that Buffy was more meaningful and true to life. 😀
