Btvs or Ats

If I must choose, I'll pick BtVS over Angel.

Personally I think Buffy is a much funnier show in pretty much every aspect.
It has wittier dialog and more humerous moments and it got true friendship between the main cast which I just love to watch.

I was 19 when I discovered the Buffyverse! And because a friend gave me all the episodes, she had found the "Angel" eps first and then "Buffy". So I watched in the wrong order!
After having completed both "AtS" and BtVs" I don't know if I can choose! Every series has a very special deep meaning.

"Buffy" apart from feminine power, loyalty, friendship, true love is also a humorous drama which, through its metaphors it shows us all the difficulties/"battles" most of the people go through in their lives. So every person can find himself/herself inside those heroes.

And "Angel", it shows how a dark, depressed person gets to become a Champion, the story of his motivation, the value of true friendship and that no matter what kind of difficulties we encounter in life, we should fight against all odds. Fight for a purpose not caring about failing or succeeding.

I'm not gonna choose because I believe that they're all just one big interconnected show anyway, but I'd like to make the following points.

- Angel had greater consistency than Buffy, but didn't reach the same heights. Buffy could have a "Once More With Feeling" one week, then a few episodes later a "Wrecked". Angel was more solid, with no episodes qualifying as awful and very few sub-par, but didn't have many outstanding episodes either. Buffy reached a higher peak of awesomeness (S2+3) but also a lower depth of crappiness (S6).

- Angel owes much of its success to Buffy - just look at the list of major characters. Angel, Cordelia, Wesley, Spike, Harmony and Darla all started off on Buffy. However, I think Angel improved most of these characters, in particular Wesley, Angel and Darla.

- In my opinion, Angel had better romances for its lead. I preferred both Cangel and (if Darla's human) Dangel to Bangel, Briley and Spuffy. However, I think Buffy had better romances for its other lead characters - I like Willow/Tara, Xander/Anya, Willow/Oz and Xander/Cordy, but Fred/Wesley and Fred/Gunn bored me (I did like Wesley/Lilah though).

- I preferred Buffy's system with having a different Big Bad each year as apposed to Angel, which for the first three seasons at least just had Wolfram and Hart as a constant Big Bad, and the finales would often feature some unrelated threat. However, I did like W&H and Buffy would sometimes end up with a rather lame Big Bad (eg. Adam and the Trio).

I sincerely want to disapprove for your S6 comment... *shakes finger*
Buffy. I grew up watching it, and as much as I like Angel, it never captured my heart in quite the same way. I'm not sure that anything else has, for that matter - Buffy is still my favourite show, and I expect it to stay that way.

Basically, I'm far more attached to the characters on Buffy, so it has more emotional resonance than Angel does. I think Angel was the more daring and intricately plotted of the two shows (though its more complex plots also went off the rails at times, like in S4), but that doesn't mean as much to me as emotional resonance and investment in the characters.

This isn't really a major factor, and probably not a very popular opinion, but I also think Buffy does comedy episodes a lot better than Angel. I think it might be because of the more noir-ish feel of Angel - when the show goes all-out comedic, it feels at odds with its usual tone, whereas for Buffy it works perfectly (I also think the characters on Buffy are better suited to comedy).

I agree with the comedy comment.
I really really love Angel, but I prefer Buffy because it's my favorite show. Also, I watch Buffy over and over every week and I love it even more every time. Also, I saw Buffy before Angel.

It is hard for me to choose between the two but I can say I LOVE Buffy it is my show and I still compare new ones to it. But the first time I watched Angel I was a little more invested than Buffy I got into so much more than I expected. To me Angel had standout episodes and Buffy did as well. I usually like early seasons of Buffy more and season 7 certain episodes but then I like Angel more.
So for me it depends on the day lol, but I do think that both shows needed each other. Watching both of them made me like certain things more. Don't know if that makes much sense but I can say it this way when I just watched Buffy I loved it but then Angel came and to see all the characters grow made both series even better to me.

I think Buffy will always be the best because it is the original but I do think for a spin off that Angel held its own and was just as good sometimes if not better.

Bump much?

I think BtVS. Angel was more consistent overall, but Buffy is just... awesome. I honestly can't explain what I love about it so much. It just reels me in and never lets go. I absolutely love Angel because of it's more "masculine" feel, the action, and the awesome group dynamic, but I just like Buffy more. I wish I could explain 🙂 Also I think it says a lot about my opinions of Buffy when I can come close to listing every episode, and easily, name any episode that someone gives me a scene from, whereas in Angel I can't really do either.

When they were being aired, I used to make a running tab in my mind of whether I preferred that week's Angel or that week's Buffy, and the majority of the time I can recall saying to myself that I preferred that week's Angel. But I think in watching the DVDs I find that I return to Buffy more often. I'm not sure why that is, unless it's that what's great about AtS relies on the element of surprise more than what's great about BtVS.

In any case, my vote goes to BtVS, but not by a huge amount. I agree that they're really one giant 12-season show.

For years I would have answered Buffy without a doubt. Now I can't choose. Or can I say Firefly? Right now I think I'd prefer Angel but as a whole it just depends on my mood. Too tired too write a lot about both shows comparing them. I love them both. That's enough for me. Not like I need to convince most of you to watch either show now do I? 😉

Bump much?
Unless the discussion has been had since this thread bumping is the way to go don't you think? Insted of starting new threads as soon as someone want to discuss something that's already has been discussed and the thread is still open.

This is a pretty good point. I never enjoyed Buffy as much as when I saw AtS s3 second half and s4... So much suspense and surprises. When I rewatch these parts, it just isn't the same. It's still fun but sooooo not the same thing.

I think overall i'd lean towards Buffy. I'am more attached to the Buffy characters then i am with the Angel characters. I must say though that Angel is a fantastic show in its own right i know that because of the rewatch i'am doing at the moment.

Didn't read all 3 pages but I did read some of the OP. I think we differ on the humor thing. When I watch Buffy I am constantly smirking or outright laughing out loud, whereas when I watch Angel I'm pretty stoic.

It's definitely BtVS for me. Just by the fact that I love rewatching Buffy whereas Angel I just get bored on a rewatch.
