The Puppet Show;

The Good;
The introduction of Snyder. Cordy's performance and the hair gag with Giles. The triple Keyser Soze, Buffy's relationship with Sid. The exciting finale, Snyders reaction to it and the Scoobies scene at the end. Don't you just love the fact that Buffy the superhero runs into her mum's arms when she get's scared in the night? Something only a female hero could do, what would we think of Clark Kent if he did that on Smallville?

The Bad;
Not much, a very strong episode, easily one of the best of the first season

Best line;
Buffy; Euuuugghhhh, dummy! They freak me out, ever since I was little.
Willow; What happened?
Buffy; I saw a dummy, it freaked me out, there really wasn't a backstory there
(anyone else reminded of Gremlins?)

Observations and questions;
Our first hint that there are other individuals fighting the forces of darkness like Whistler and Doyle. The scene the Scoobies perform at the end is from Oedipus which Angelus references in season 4 of Angel. It was painted by Grant Wood who Riley refers to in season 4. Cordy sings 'The Greatest Love of all' which she also sings for Lorne on Angel. She hasn't the best voice. Giles in bondage, the first of a long line of Scoobies to be tied/chained up. Snyder obviously going to be a lot harder on Buffy than Flutie was although as an authority figure that probably works better for the series. At this point though he doesn't really seem to know what's going on (does he ever?). Flutie was a nice guy but has the misfortune to be the 2nd recurring character killed in the course of the series. The police put the butcher knife in a plastic bag? Don't they have some better form of container? Willow suffers from stage fright. Willow is clever enough to know that 841 has a square root of 29 but how does Xander know that to ask her? A shame Joyce doesn't come to the talent show. Will plays the piano?

One of the best eps of season 1, I give it 9 out of 10
 
I didn't understand the wig part.
I loved the scene at the end when they perform Oedipus. I think it's Oedipus.
 
To be honest, this episode might be tied with 'Bad Eggs' for the special place of my least favorite episode of the show ever. The whole puppet thing freaks me out. The only amusing part of this episode is the end, where they attempt to stage that play.
 
Yes it's Oedipus. I think the whole wig part is that we expect there to be some backstory for Buffy not liking dummies but there isn't. she just doesn't like them
 
Just like Buffy I don't like dummyes they scare me.They are so real but in the same time they are not.But horny Sid was funny.My third favourite episode of season 1.
 
I used to hate this episode because I hate puppets but rewatching it recently I really enjoyed it! Some really funny bits especially the last scene!
 
Lot of people don't like dummies, I guess they're scared by something that looks human but isn't?

Yeah.It's not natural.They look so real but then someone puts their hand in them and help them to speak.It's creepy.

Definitely true for me. Human face on a dead object = scary. I get uneasy around dolls, too (but not plush animals, I love them).
 
I love when they kill the demon and the curtain falls, and the audience just stares at them...
And when the screen turns black, Schnyder says "I don't get it!"
Ha ha, my favorite episode.
 
This is not one of my particular faves. I saw a horror film about a guy who gets taken over by his dummy and turns out to be a killer, this was many years ago and it still freaks me, not overly keen on clowns either so later in another episode/season Xander lets us know about his dislike of Clowns I'm with him!
 
I loved horny Sid! This was not the best episode but it was still cute. Freaky by cute 😀
 
I really liked this episode, in fact I think this and the one with Moloch are my two favorite episodes of the season. It really embodies what the first season was all about; good old fashioned 90s fun all the way around. Whenever I watch it I always think of the Goosebumps story with the living ventriloquist dummy and then it's like a blast from my childhood.

The Puppet Show has charm and the living dummy is such an ancient concept that it just works. Moloch just looks stupid, you'd have thought they learned their lesson but no, we have Adam in season 4

The one thing that I thought was amusing was when they first of think that Willow was the the most intelleligent and therefore the most likely target and then they have to decide that it is Giles. Did this set it up for the future conflict that would occour between the two of them as regards to magic and how it should be used?
