Buffy Number 2 on Empire List





Buffy The Vampire Slayer 1997-2003

Emerging from the ashes of a failed 1992 movie, this improbably titled series was the phenomenon that put Joss Whedon firmly on the map. The very essence of girl power, Buffy was an arse-kicking babe blessed with a smart mouth and a vicious roundhouse right. The winning factor, though, was that the supporting characters were just as appealing as the lead, from Willow the lesbian witch to Anya the former vengeance demon. Above all others, though, It was however James Marsters' turn as Brit bloodsucker, Spike, who most frequently stole the show.

Best Episode
A toss-up between the superb musical episode Once More With Feeling (Season 6, Episode 7) and Hush (Season 4, Episode 10), which was performed almost entirely in mime.

Did You Know
Angel was only resurrected after his death in Season 2 because the network decided to greenlight a spin-off show.

And well deserved! I love that the show continues to get recognition, and not just from those of us that know it's every detail. The only thing that annoys me is that they always cop-out and choose between Hush and OMWF which sort of disregards the amazing work that was done on all the 'regular' episodes week in and week out.
 
Empire magazine is a pretty elite magazine in the world of film and TV too, so to get second place is doubley impressive!

I also agree that saying OMWF and Hush are the best episodes is a cop-out answer. What about Innocence? and The Gift? And Band Candy? And Prophecy Girl? And Chosen? There's so many fantastic episodes that everyone picking the same ones over and over again is frustrating.

And like Keanoite said, I can live with the show being second to only The Simpsons. That's acceptable.

exactly what i thought too. when i read OMWF and Hush i just thought 'what a standard answer'. 'suprise/innocent', 'becoming part 2', the body...all stand-out eps

They go for ones like OMWF and Hush because they broke the mold of this kind of show. They aren't bitching about the rest of the show but shoing in two examples WHY this show is so outstanding.

It isn't a cop out, its just they can't list every single episode.

Jeez.

I mean Only Fools and Horses is on the list, the show ran for over 20 years and they use the example from the first season, the most iconic moment.
Its nothing to do with other episodes being inferior, its because IF you don't watch the show, these are probably the ones you will have heard of if any at all.

I know they can't list every single every episode, but when picking a 'best episode' I always believe that one should choose a particular ep that shows how much the show could explore, the brilliance of each and every character and how wonderful talented every single actor in the show is, rather than one that made you go 'Wow, that was different'. Wow-that-was-different is the most stand-out episode or most impressive. Best should be an episode that covered everything the show was and Innocence was that for me.

Plus, when a hundred and odd people have AAAALL said OMWF was the best episode in their opinion, I begin to get desperate for someone to think *outside* the box.

Joyce, no offense but what a pile of crap.

For a start, Once More with Feeling and Hush DID do the whole range.
Just because they had a different element to them that makes them stand out, doesn't take away from the fact they were remarkable on every level.

And, quite frankly, how dare you.

JUST because someone does or doesn't believe OMWF is or isn't the greatest episode does NOT mean anything.
The opinion of that hundred and odd people is JUST as valid as yours. Because they like the episode does NOT mean they are limited and don't think outside the box. What your comment tells me is that your a tad pretentious and condescending to others because they like a well made, greatly acted episode that is universally adored.

IF you don't favour this episode over others, that is fair game, but that doesn't mean it is any less worthy of people saying it is there favourite episode.

Some people will like it because of the novelty value BUT some will like it for other reasons.

Which is totally fair.
If you are a non fan or a magazine, these episodes show a landmark TV show daring to go to a place others won't.
The whole point of trying them is to see if you can and if they succeed, which they did, then obviously they will be talked about.

That wasn't it at all. I think people who watch the show are perfectly in their right to say OMWF is in their opinion the best episode, just like many of the actors did. But I wish people who write articles on the show, who perhaps have not watched the show many times and probably aren't as major fans of the show as, for example, us, would stop going for the obvious choice and picking, as Nightbird said, the episode that had most exposure. If they could fully go into it- given the option to that is- as to why it should be named the best etc, yes, but such as this article where they've essentially gone 'OMWF because they sing and Hush because they don't talk' I get a little disappointed.

And no, I'm not offended. Like I said above on the comment, we can agree to disagree, I'm sure.

I think its awesome that not Just Buffy made the list but Angel at number 21 and firefly at number 14... Thats just great they all made the top 25! I'm so excited now.
 
This is a great list! There are so many good shows on here (I was especially thrilled to see Heroes at #15), and it's great to see that all of Joss' shows are pretty high up. Here's to hoping that Dollhouse will be one of the top 50 TV shows!

How is claiming that in HER mind, Buffy is the No. 1 show of all time a) denigrate The Simpsons; and b) lessen Buffy's achievement by hitting No. 2 on some list they didn't consult her on? I, too, consider Buffy the No. 1 show of all time. I don't really like The Simpsons. Of course, I also consider Firefly the No. 2 show of all time. So what does that do to all the shows that Empire decided were between Buffy and Firefly that I've not seen or don't care about, and why should it matter?

Because I said so.

I thought we had already established this many times over.

However when a supposedly impartial group makes a list of TV shows that they claim to be the 50 greatest, to disregard one based on the fact it is a cartoon does a disservice to the shows that also inhabit the list because they are there based on the same criteria.

If we were to do our own lists of all time, Buffy still wouldn't be on the top of mine. It would be quite high but probably not in the top 3 and Firefly wouldn't even register.

Hmm. I am pleased. I am pleased that Buffy is #2 and that Firefly and Angel made the top 25. I am a little displeased with the leaving out of anything even remotely soapy or airing in any non-prime-time slot or aimed at a specific age bracket, (Pete & Pete, anyone? My So-Called Life?) but all in all, I think this is a fine list and I am tickled pink that so many of my favorites are on it.

I was just saying that..simpsons is a cartoon so #1 is a good placement for me in a cartoon category. And then in the human tv show category, to me Buffy is #1. A ton of people love the simpsons and they don't think of it the way I do. But that's how I think of it. And that's ok to.
