Imagine you're in an alternate universe. It's been five or six years since the cancellation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," your favorite tv show, and the creator of the show announces that he is going to make a series (probably three or more) of movies that, if successful, will almost certainly lead to a revival of the series. But there is a problem.

The original actors are either too old to reprise their parts, are otherwise committed, or just plain don't want to play that part anymore. In order to go forward with the movies, it is decided that the entire cast will have to be replaced, using younger actors.

Do you:

1) Take a "wait and see" attitude, on the belief that it is the CHARACTERS that you loved, and replacing the original actors might possibly work.

2) Absolutely refuse to even consider seeing the movies because "the actor IS the character and no one else could possibly play that part."

3) Make great noises about how the new actors will never replace the originals, but sneak off to see the movies when no one is looking.

4) Boycott the creator, writers, studio, and any theaters who would even be involved in such a blasphemous desecration of the only true version of the show.

5) Lynch me for even proposing such a subject as appropriate for this forum.
 
lmao I say lynch you!! Joking only, I'm not in my murderrous mood right now 🙂 This subject has actually intrigued me although the matter was different. Meaning Star Wars 😀 . I could never accept with my heart the first three episodes despite the fact that there was no change of actors ( except for Obi Wan ). But that's another topic for discussion.

IMO Actors bring their uniqueness as individuals to the character they play and this uniqueness becomes a vital part of that character. It is no longer only what the author of that character has in mind, it's a symbiosis between the actor and the character. They become inseparate. Therefore if an actor is replaced it feels a great part of the character is lost.

There is the other problem that even if the new actors are daaarn good, they always seem to imitate their ancestors ( if that's the word ) in attempt to bring back that feel. But we all know that imitation fails.

As to me, it would feel like I'm raping my memories or something. I'd see Buffy2, of course, out of curiosity. Just a glance so that I can have an opinion on it.

i'm in two minds about this.
on the one hand, the actors definitely bring their own unique style to a character. they mold a rough blue print and description of a character, into a 3-d person who we all fall in love with. the actros add things to the characters that maybe weren't originally written, and then the writers thing 'hey, that actually works' and it becomes integeral to that oarticular character. i don't think i would enjoy seeing other actors take on the roles of these characters that i grew up with. it would seem...weird.

but, on the other hand, if Joss was the person writing this, then it just confuses me even more. yes, the actors being thier unique atributes to the role, but it's Joss behind the wheel. he's the one writing for them, creating them, building them. Joss is the one who brought these characters to the TV screen, and so if he was the one in control, despite the fact that none of the original cast was a part of it, i think i would go see it. but on'y 'cause it's Joss.

if it was anyone else in control...i think i'd tell everyone that there would be no way i would see it, then secretly drag my best friend to the cinema with me...she's the only person who could keep a secret! LMAO
 
The reason I started this thread (and promptly forgot to include when posting it.) was a discussion with friends about the new James Bond movie and the different interpretations the different actors have given to the role. Certainly, no one could replace Sean Connery, and each new actor to play the part has to give it his own interpretation, make it uniquely his own. The same could be said for Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, or any other character.

No one will ever be Buffy the way Sarah was, and no one calling herself a legitimate actor should try. There could be, however, other interpretations of the character, certainly different, some even in some ways (here's where the "lynch me" option comes in) better.

Buffy is, by definition, a young girl, not really a mature woman. Sarah is fast approaching the time where she will be just too old for the part, as will all of the other characters. As has been established, each actor adds something to the character portrayed. Given that fact, the character of Buffy as portrayed in the Season 8 series, which we are all so happy about, can never be "our" Buffy, because the actor's interpretation, ANY actor's interpretation, simply isn't there. (Get out the rope, boys, I'll go without a fight) It may actually be closer to Joss' real idea of what the character is than any actor could possibly portray.
 
I have to say there's an option I'm missing... how about:

7) Go see the movies no matter what, because you have the utmost faith in Joss' ability to make it work with or without the original cast (however great they may have been).

I'd like to think i'd be rational and be able to take a 'wait and see', 'open-minded' approach but i bet i wouldn't - i'd be picky and critical about whatever was produced.
Have any of you see that Final FAntasy XII film 'Advent Children'? that is my secret wish that they would make a buffy movie with that beautiful animation and all the ast would come back and do the voices. It would be the best of both worlds.
 
Basically I'd go and see anything Joss is involved in. And um, Buffy's not immortal so it's not like they could replace her with a 'younger looking' actor anyway. SMG's not that old 😛 I'm Buffy's age.. think SMG is 30ish now?
 
I'd see it, but it would be a majorly different viewing experience than I'd be used to.

I just couldn't see any actors besides the original cast playing the part as it was in the show. Sure, another actor could bring a different and good interpretation to the part. Sure, Joss could be the writer, so the flow would be the same. But it just wouldn't work. The actors make the character. They take the written word and turn it into the actual. You could have the best piece of script and it would suck if the actor could not convey it on screen the way it always had been.
 
I think I'd probably put my hand up for the Final Fantasy animation type deal. Mainly because I think it would be awesome. Also, it would at least give some chance of the original cast a chance to be apart of it in a way that would probably take up less time than a live action film.

But in saying that I'd probably go see it if it had different actors for the characters...I'd be too curious not to.
 
I can see a day way off in the future when a movie, DVD, Internet production is made based on the comic section of the Buffy story. The TV series section of the canon could become secondary. As far as the actors go, they're interchangeable parts. No biggie.
 
I don't know if I'd be interested in watching somebody else play the role of Willow Rosenburg or even Buffy. Looking back Kristy Swanson was the original Buffy, but of course when I think of Buffy I think of Sarah Michelle Gellar cause she was in that role for longer and even when you look at the comics Buffy is drawn like Sarah, Willow is drawn like Alyson, Xander is drawn like Nicholas, etc, etc. So yeah the actor's interpretation isn't there, but you still have the visual image of these characters and have your imagination to figure out how Sarah speaking as Buffy would possibly sound. I mean you can look at many shows that switched actors in the middle and they each suffered ratings loses or whatever because of that. Look at Bewitched when they switched Darins. Charmed when Paige came in to replace Prue. When on Fresh Prince of Bel Air they switched Vivians and many other shows that did stuff similar
 
I couldn't do it. It has nothing to do with Joss's ability to create a masterpiece, cause we already know he does that well. But Buffy is not Buffy without the characters (and the very actors who play them) we love. I would see it, but there is no way it could have a place in my heart like my show does.
