Buffy and Angel Meet

I know this quote well, but I just noticed something that hasn't been discussed before (I think): "There's a place". Now that made me thinking. What place are they talking about? Is it a secret place that only the two of them know? Their special place? It was never metioned before or after.....

I'm truly amazed that none of you young people have figured out where Buffy and Angel would have picked for their "special place" to meet, a place outside of Los Angeles and away from the hellmouth, a place where wishes come true, where dreams take on a life of their own. The ONLY place really appropriate for Sleeping Beauty and her Prince Charming to be reunited. A magical kingdom, known and loved by all (Okay, there's one lady here who hates the place, but still...) Buffy and Angel had their reunion in DISNEYLAND.

(Can't you just imagine how cute Buffy and Angel would be in matching Mouskateer ears?)

My Pet theory on this:

Buffy is back from the dead and finding it hard to adjust to Life. She doesn't really want to be around her friends and she feels strangely drawn to Spike. It's all very disconcerting. Angel calls and instantly Buffy feels that this could be the answer to her problems - seeing Angel will be the perfect antidote to her perpetual numbness.

They meet (I always imagine in a road-side diner but where doesn't really matter) and it is not at all like Buffy imagined or hoped it would be. The meeting is awkward and uncomfortable - Angel is too bright and shiney - to real and "alive" for her. he's another reminder of everything that she's had to give up for her mission. She wants the dark and death and he is the antithesis of that. She doesn't tell him that she was in heaven. She doesn't tell him that she wishes she was still dead.

They part after a short while. Angel goes back to LA and ice-cream, Buffy goes home with fried chicken. Comfort food anyone?

Buffy and Angel always were and always will be drawn to each other, no matter what their relationship is at the time. I do think they are soul mates (and no, I'm NOT shipping!!) and therefore understand each other. Buffy needed someone to confide in, and Angel was probably happy that the one girl he had ever truly loved was alive again.

But of course, it being them, someone said something wrong, they got pissed, realized again why they could never truly be together and then got depressed and broody.

I'm gonna go with the majority here and say that it was horrifically awkward... but with a little depth at the end. Maybe a badly formed metaphor about cookie dough. The basic anatomy of a Buffy/Angel fight basically begins with the awkward and ends with the kissy face or 5 minute stare. Usually both. Of course Joss has never talked about it... I wish he would. It's such a pivotal moment in my mind... And it's just glossed over. Fail.

What do you think happened at the meeting? I'm not aware that Joss or anybody else ever dropped any hints, but maybe I missed something.

I think it was a bittersweet and slightly awkward reunion. I imagine Buffy told him what happened, and he comforted her as he'd always done. I doubt there was any romance. They'd always leaned on each other in times of need, and I think that their interaction was probobly lower-key than many of you would like to imagine.

There are many good fics that explore the possibilities of what could have happened in that scene. Could someone here recommend one?

I don't think Buffy was referring to any "special" place that only she and Angel knew about. I think, like much in Buffy, that comment was meant to be symbolic.

By meeting "somewhere in the middle", there is the assumption that a compromise is being made, meaning a "middleground." It could simply refer to the fact that its fair to meet in the middle that way neither has to drive the entire distance.

They definitely needed to meet on neutral turf - I always find it funny when either one of them goes to LA or Sunnydale, the other comments, "This is MY town." Obviously, their turf wars cause big problems. 🙂

This is the main thing that always bugs me about Buffy/Angel. It drives me crazy, i feel like i have to know! I thought it was just me! If i ever met joss whedon or the writing team i would have to ask them even if i only got i question. I got so excited when i found out about the comic and i brought it...i was so disappointed by it...i was so hoping for a solid, actual answer!
