How do you think the show would have been changed if the gay couple had been Buffy and Faith instead of Willow and Tara?

Why have one when we can have both?

But for the sake of the argument let's assume they do change the gay couple to Fuffy instead of Tillow. I say that nothing significant changes. Details sure (please remove Riley lol). But really, Faith and Buffy could have easily been together in s3 and the overall plot of the season could still have been the exact same. The only thing is they might have had to expand s3 into s4 to have time to actually explore the relationship before Faith goes bad. Or they could pair the slayers in s7, but again it would be necessary to bring in Faith sooner to build up the relationship.

Conclusion, the only change is MORE FAITH 😀 Nothing can go wrong with that.

I think the show would have been attacked if Buffy and Faith were lesbians. I think the right wing media would made it out to be a statement that lesbians cannot be soft and gentle and the show was perpetuating the myth of the 'butch lesbian' since the two strongest women were also lesbians. Whereas the left would attack it for the obvious reasons. I think the whole thing could have been blown out of proportion and would have affected the longevity of the series.

Yeah, I don't see the 'either/or' thing but whatever. 😕 I like Tillow just fine.

If you exachange Fuffy for Tillow you get more Faith (and presumably more Oz to keep Willow happy) which of course is the main thing. 😀

But plot-wise it doesn't have to change that much. In s3 Faith could've still gone bad even if she was in a relationship with Buffy, it just would've been much messier and more heart-breaking for both of them.
I agree with @Blaze that they would've needed to expand it into S4 if they wanted to explore the relationship in any sort of depth.

In S7 just bring Faith back sooner and have her in place of Spike. You still have the trust issues, the mistrust from all the others who don't realise that Faith has changed, and way more sexual tension. Sounds like an improvement to me!

But if we're talking in general/culturally then making Buffy fall for a girl (officially) would've been a huge deal, and would've caused a major stir in most pop culture circles- this being been back when it would've a trail-blazing move on the shows part. (The WB would've never had gone for it. UPN however...)

Other than that they still could've kept the thing that made Tillow special, that the gender-issue wasn't ever really the focus. It was love/passion/tenderness between two people who just happened to be the same gender. 🙂

Which is how it should be. Whether its two witches or two slayers there's that special, unique connection.

Switching Spike s7 with Faith sounds so good, it kinda hurts that it didn't happen.
Blah, ya makes me sad, but it's true that things would have probably been blown out of proportion by the networks and the critiques.

I hardly see this as being a problem. Buffy and Faith are so far from being "butch". I mean, the whole premise of the show is girl cheerleader saves the world. Buffy would definitely make a super girly lesbian. Strong doesn't equate butch, just like girly doesn't equate weak.

The rest I agree with, it might have caused an uproar in the media.

Faith is kinda butch though. Biker-chick that she is! :)

You could bend the facts and highlight her 'butch' tendencies if you wanted to make a point.. I mean look at the Riley points from that other post.

This! I want this! More Faith and Oz please! I don't really care for Tara so I'm fine with switching Tillow for Fuffy. I love the idea of Faith coming back earlier in S7 and taking Spike's place, because I don't really care about the Spuffy stuff. Like you said Faith fills a similar role like Spike, in seeking redemption. It would play out almost the same. Getting them together in S3 would be tricky because of Angel. I don't think it would change the way the show deals with a lesbian couple but the shows plot would definitely change. No Riley, probably, maybe no Spuffy or Tara. All good things imo.

It depends where you'd slot it in really. If you're trying to keep the plot running along similar lines but with them as a couple at some point then I think it's going to be a mess if I'm honest. If they get together first and then Faith still becomes a mercenary then it makes Faith even worse and her decision to sell out like that would be completely baffling.

If on the other hand you have the relationship start after Faith has sold out then your faced with the big problem of Buffy deciding to enter a relationship with a murderer, rapist and sadist who has personally abused her. There'd be no room for excuses since Faith would be in possession of her soul throughout. Those people who can't stand seeing Buffy look at Spike in Season 7 would surely have a much bigger issue with Buffy getting with Faith.

So essentially for it to work and make any kind of sense you're looking at a complete re-write and I like Buffy how it is so this doesn't really appeal to me. The only plus side would have been to have pissed off some homophobes, religious nuts and the "won't someone please think of the children" types.
