Buffy and Giles laughing in Grave

Someone reminded me of that scene in another thread... Am I the only one who was NEVER able to watch it completely without laughing my ass off? 😛 It's like, no matter when I watch it, I'll start laughing, a bit after Giles does. All the things Buffy tells him are so crazy that it ends up sounding just hilarious. I love that scene! It felt so real, and so did the transition back to seriousness.

I often wondered what they did to make Anthony Head laugh like that, haha. 🙂

Have you ever watched any interviews with Anthony? Or even special features. He's got to be the giggliest man I've ever seen (and it's incredibly sexy to me). Knowing that before I watched Grave (which is my number one favorite episode), I really loved that laughing scene. Anyway, though, making Anthony laugh like that appears to me to be really, really easy. 🙂 That's just him, from everything I've seen.

I totally laugh every time at that scene.
It reminds me of the numerous times someone says something very serious, but it sounds so absurd/funny that there is an awkward silence and then you look at your friend to check if you are the only one who is about to burst into laugh and you realize you are not alone and you start laughing unexplicably....Ah, good times. That's why when there is a silence and Giles stares at Buffy and then starts laughing, I cannot not laugh with it. And I feel like laughing just thinking about that scene :heart:


I think it was in the commentary of Restless that Joss said Sarah had difficulties to laugh in front of the camera, because she felt more comfortable with the tragic stuff or being funny, but not laugh, so I mostly wonder what they did to make her laugh like that in the front of the camera. (Come to think of it, I think it's the first time we see Buffy laugh out loud, if I'm not mistaking.)

In the first few times yeah, I did laugh along. Now I can't stop thinking about poor Anthony who had to laugh hard take after take. That's a very hard thing to do as an actor.

After all the drama, after all the "You did something bad" speeches on both shows, it was a nice change.

But, I might be imagining this, I think I heard that ASH just started to laugh, unplanned, and they kept it.

I have a theory about this scene, similar to my theory about the Giles singing moments in season 4.

I think that Joss and/or the writers built the Giles singing moments into the show after realizing what a great singing voice Anthony has.

And, in this show, I think that Joss and/or the writer (I don't think Joss wrote this episode) built the laughter in after realizing what a charming laugh Anthony has.

Really? I hate that scene. I always feel like the writers are laughing directly at the fans, kind of like: What? You really thought we were being serious about this crap season?

I dislike most of season 6, every ep just added more and more disappointment. The show had stopped being the Buffy I loved, and them laughing about everything I was so pissed off about didn't make it better.

After seeing some interviews with Anthony and seeing him on other shows as himself, I noticed how much he laughs all the time and I wondered if that scene in Grave was just an outtake that they decided to keep... Then I read somewhere someone said that the actors in that scene couldn't do it without laughing, so they just wrote it into the script. Which I find totally believable. But it could have just been that person's guess, or it may be completely untrue... Who knows?

Either way, Anthony Head has a very gorgeous laugh. Anyone seen him on that reality show 'celebrity couples' or something like that?

Yes, "All Star Mr. and Mrs." It's on YouTube, in two parts, for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's charming and hilarious. Until I saw it, I thought I didn't like Anthony's partner, because she never seemed to smile in photos and I thought she seemed humorless. When I saw this, I loved her. She's as charming and funny as he is. And now I've seen plenty of photos with her smiling.

Although I love season 6, my initial reaction to that scene was somewhat similar to yours. I didn't really like it because I didn't like how they were making a joke out of some serious things that happened. However, I have grown to appreciate that scene because it goes along with the theme of season 6...that "life is the big bad." Sometimes, we make bad decisions that lead to horrible consequences. Yet, we learn from them. And, in time, we may be able to look back on them and laugh. That's the general feeling I get from that scene now. It makes me smile, but I'm not rolling on the floor laughing.

I hold nothing but pure derision for Season 6 but even I love this scene. The reason I love it is because it is so genuine. I've had moments like that in my life, where everything is so bad it is laughable.

And that's what that scene was. Buffy's life was SO bad it was funny. Sometimes in life you can either laugh or you can cry; I'll take laughing any day.

At first it felt wrong and awkward but when the laugh still continued I couldn't help but laugh with them. Anthony's laugh is amazing he should have laughed alot more.
