We're quickly approaching the time when at least one question pertaining to Buffy and Spike, namely whether or not she knew previously that he had returned, what is your opinion? Did Buffy know that Spike had returned, and, if so, why did she never make any attempt to contact him, if only to thank him for what they had both believed at the time was his ultimate sacrifice in closing the hellmouth?

Personally, I believe that she never knew that he had returned, and I also believe that the knowledge was deliberately kept from her by the person or people who she had trusted the most.

Um, Spike mentioned the downside of a phone call:

ANDREW
Why haven't you told her?
SPIKE
"Hello, Buffy. It's Spike. I didn't burn up like you thought.
How are things?"

Personally, I believe that she never knew that he had returned, and I also believe that the knowledge was deliberately kept from her by the person or people who she had trusted the most.
Why are you trying to twist this into a betrayal when Spike said:
SPIKE
No. Don't tell her. I'll take care of it.
ANDREW
Got it. You're a loner... playin' it cucumber, as in "cool as
a..."
SPIKE
Just keep your mouth shut.

If I had to guess, I'd say Buffy doesn't know, because Spike didn't want her to know. With the world ending and such perhaps he thought it time for a reunion.

I don't think Buffy knows. Because Spike doesn't want to tell her. I think for him their chapter ended with "No you don't, but thanks for saying it" on her heartbreaking "I love you".

Even though it's been a long time since Spike's return, it's not too far fetched for Buffy to be in the dark. There's not a lot of communication between the good guys. Do we even know if Buffy knows about Connor? We know that Willow knows but I don't think Buffy has ever mentioned it.

I think she eventually found out and was really hurt over it. It would explain why she felt abandoned by both Spike and Angel in her Always Darkest dream.

Spike may have told Andrew not to tell Buffy in Damage but it was obvious in TGIQ that he wanted to see Buffy but Andrew lied to him (saying Buffy "moved on" and was happy) and purposely had a DecoyBuffy dating the guy (The Immortal) that Drusilla and Darla cheated on Spike and Angelus with. Because of Andrew, Spike and Angel thought Buffy was in love with The Immortal and partying and having fun when really she the lonely stressed out leader of an international paramilitary organization.

I think she knows and she didn't contact him, because it should have been him to contact her, but he decided not to and go have sex with Harmony and whatever else happened in the comics.

I think the idea of making it someone 'she trusted the most' the person at fault for why they haven't spoken yet is sugar coating both Buffy and Spike and trying to make excuses for both of them.

As Buffyverse Fan pointed out, it was Spike's decision not to tell her and even if he did seem to regret that decision in TGIQ, there was nothing stopping him doing so. Even if Andrew did spin a tale that she had moved on, is Spike the type of guy to just sit back and not do anything about it? If he is then maybe he doesn't deserve to be with her anyway. If he was that convinced that they were destined to be together then he should fight for her.

And who knows, I wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact BUFFY who maybe wishes for them (Angel and Spike) to think that she's moved on and she's happy or whatever. As for whether she does know or not? Who knows. I think both situations are likely so jury's out on that one for me.

Well this is her reaction to the sight of him:

Interpret that how you will . . . for the next three months 😉

God, i hate the artwork. she looks 12. =(
My theory about why Buffy doesn't know that Spike returned is based on the fact that I am an interfering old man who, if I were in that situation, knowing how close Buffy and Spike had become in those last few months, would have felt it my obligation to a friend to let Buffy know as soon as I myself became aware of the fact. I would not have waited the several weeks until Spike became corporeal and suddenly, illogically, changed his mind about going to see her. Practically the first words out of Spike's mouth upon his return were "Where's Buffy?" which would seem to indicate that he DID want to see or at least speak to her. If, on the other hand, I were a former lover or a former mentor, both of whom had a previous history of making decisions for others with the excuse that I knew more about "the greater good" than the person or people most concerned, I would do everything within my power to prevent any knowledge of Spike's return from ever reaching Buffy.

As I said originally, that is my personal theory, which I have had since the first episode of Season five aired, and I don't expect anyone else to agree with it. Within the next three months, that theory may be either proven or dispelled. Until that time, that's my belief, and I have no desire to change it.

Because I'm not just an interfering old man, I'm also a stubborn old man.

While you are obviously entitled to your opinion and theory and I wouldn't dream of trying to change your mind, I am honestly curious as to whether you actually lay any responsibility at Spike's feet for them not having spoken yet?

Because even though that was pretty much his first thought, he still didn't do anything about it. So even if Angel or Giles (who I have an inkling you're referring to 😉) both kept their mouths shut they are not entirely at fault.

And, I guess, I just think that there's a inconsistency with when it's okay for characters to make decisions for others and when its not, namely in this situation Giles or Angel deciding for Spike whether or not Buffy knew of his return.

Yep, it was. And that person was Spike.

No matter what way you twist and turn this situation, it always comes back to Spike's decision to not tell Buffy he was back. Contacting Buffy is 100% Spike's call, whether he was corporeal or not, he could have found a way. It's not as if he tried but was twarted by Angel and Giles, he made the decision to not contact her.

NO ONE else was obligated to tell Buffy about Spike when he had the ability to make that decision himself. He explicitly expressed to Andrew that he didn't Buffy knowing about his resurrection. That isn't a conclusion he just came to in that ep. It was a decision he had been standing by the entire season.

exactly!
I think Spike did the right thing when he chose to not tell her he is alive. I can´t really explain why he did it but i´ve done the same thing long time ago. Except i wasn´t dead. 🙂 Letting the love of my life go was the hardest thing i´ve ever done but i don´t regret it and it was the right thing to do.

I guess Buffy still doesn´t know that he lived but i´m curious and a little bit worried how she reacts. But i´m pretty sure Willow and Giles already knew he was alive.

I just hope Angel quits talking in the whole next issue. I´m tired to hear his bullsh*t. I want some privacy between Buffy and Spike but i don´t think it will satisfy the Spuffies and imo it´s clear that Joss prefers Bangel. But don´t worry Joss wouldn´t alienate the whole Spuffy fandom so there will be some intense moments.

A kiss would be awesome! :biggrin3:

Worst case: Spike turns out to be the big bad....but Joss would never do that wouldn´t he? Please tell me he wouldn´t do that just to shock us again.

I don't think she knows and I think it would suck if she did and we missed the scene when she found out.

I also don't think Buffy planned that whole Immortal thing. Doesn't she say something about 'Andrew thought it would be funny for some reason' in the very first issue? And her face in #35 looks extremely shocked and surprised.

So no I don't think she knows.

Yeah, I don't think she knows either - Mainly because I don't want to believe that such a huge moment would be done 'off-page'. I also think the expression of Buffy's (albeit cartoony) face suggests shock so that adds weight to the argument. As for who will be upset with whom - I don't think it will be that big a deal. Spike had his reasons for not calling, Buffy might be a bit pisssed but she's forgiven him for worse things.

You're probably right. I just say all that plot and counter-plot stuff to stir the Bangels up. They get downright lazy if you don't get 'em excited once in awhile. (But don't tell 'em I said that)

You think we don't know this? You pick this fight every 3 months.

Actually, it's every 4 months, but who's counting. But anyhow, it'll all be proven or disproven within the next few months, then I'll have to come up with a whole new conspiricy theory.
