I was thinking today about how similar the characters are...not necessarily the actual story. Dean and Buffy have a lot in common, Sam and Willow, Giles and Bobby, Cas and Anya. I could go on FOREVER about the similarities..but does anyone else see them? And am I missing any pair of characters that may have things in common?

I love supernatural. And ya I agree it does seem similar to btvs

I like Supernatural. It's a good show. Dean is a great character. Sam too at times... But to compare Dean to Buffy or Bobby to Giles?? NO WAY! I don't see them as being even that similar. I guess you could convince me for Sam/Willow and Cas/Anya, though. 😛

Can you give more details on why you see Dean having lots of similarities with Buffy?

P.S: You probably should have posted this in the 'Inside Out' section, since it isn't just about s7. More of a general question. 😉

Sam is good ALL the time.
1. Dean and Buffy both very protective of their younger sibling
2. Both died for their younger sibling
3. Both have a difficult time sharing their feelings with others
4.Both died and came back
5. Both been to heaven
6.Both crawled their way out of a grave
7.Both have absent fathers
8.Both played the " dumb blonde" compared to Sam or Willow
9. Both have great witty vain yet funny puns
"I may be dead, but I'm still pretty. Which is more than I can say for you." "“ Buffy, "Prophecy Girl"

"You think you're funny ?" "“ Henricksen
"I think I'm adorable." "“ Dean

10. Both laugh in the face of death
11. Both have that BA attitude at times

There are prolly more..did I convince you?

And with Bobby and Giles IK They are like opposite but...

1. Mentor for youngsters
2. A father figure for the main character(s)
3. Very smart...plenty of experience

And yea I am a newbie here so..I didn't know were to put it

Don't worry about the thread, one of our fine mods will move it. No biggie :) BTW, welcome to BB :D
I can see where you're coming from. When the latest storyline in Supernatural started I dunno why but it kinda made me think of a Buffy storyline. Like, it made me think it was something that could have worked quite nicely on Buffy. But I dunno anymore, I've kinda lost track of the new season. Which is sad. It's one of my favourite shows 🙁

But I like the similarities you've come up with. I never really thought about it like that, but I guess I can see alot of comparisons now you mention it! But they're both shows about fighting vamps and demons and so on and so forth, so I'm sure some similarities were bound to occur 😛

I've just started season 4, but I can see the similarities. That Ghostfacers ep made me go "Duuudes, that's like Storyteller." and that poor guy was nerdy like Andrew, but at the end when they show his video reminds me of Doyle in Hero. Plus, there are women who look like Fred, Darla, Tara and Harmony. But for me, Supernatural is scarier than BtVS.

O
Ollehh
MUCH scarier than BtVS.
When I first started watching SPN I could see nothing but Buffy in it. Lyri will atest to that cuz I kept pointing it out to her lol

I can definitely see where you are coming from, I mean there is a reason why Buffy/Dean is popping up all over fandom. They do share similarities.

In saying all of that, I don't always enjoy the similarities of SPN and BTVS.
During this season, I find it jarring how many things are alike, Sam losing his soul? That is just an out and out Buffy thing. And now this Mother of All (I'm assuming she is supposed to be the Mother of All Evil, strikes me so very much like The First).

In a way I think the similarities are unavoidable when you are doing a supernatural show. Stories are bound to look alike.

Me too! Now that you brought up that Mother Of All, very much like The First, I can totally see that. Because of the little we've seen so far of this Mother Of All. Which is obviously little bit so far.

Yeah..when Mother of All first appeared on the show, I immediately thought of the First

I can't believe that no one here has pointed out that both Dean and Buffy have special relationships with...angels.

And, while Bobby and Giles are far from similar, I would absolutely love to see someone write a good crossover fan fiction where they meet up for a beer or ten or twelve and discuss the thankless jobs that they both have, watching out for hot headed young hero types with holy missions. Especially if they met at Joe Dawson's bar in Seacouver and ended the night up singing a few songs.

Yea..I don't think I would count the Anna and Angel thing..cuz Angel is a demon and Anna is an actual Angel which are two completely opposite things ( well sometimes angels are worse, but u kno what i mean) I do get where you are coming from tho. And that would be so funny if Giles and Bobby met up..I know they are unlike each other but like you said they are both the mentor of the young heros

Kind of random, but how good is Supernatural? I have been looking for a show to fill my "Buffy" void, is Supernatural worth spending time watching?

Oh hell yes...the plots are not really that alike but they do have some similarities. I LOVE Supernatural and i am sure it will fill your Buffy craving

Thanks. I'll give it a shot :D
I was a fan of Supernatural when it first came out....I can't see the similarities really, but maybe because I haven't been watching it lately.

I love Supernatural. Some things about it annoy me, but one thing I think it does way better than Buffy is lore continuity. And just lore in general. So much of it is based on folklore and legend, which I think is awesome, and as far as I know, they've never broken their own rules. I also like how demons are evil spirits that possess people, rather than monsters of all shapes and sizes and moral alignments. But the Buffyverse has it beat in lots of other categories. As much as I like Supernatural, Buffy and Angel are still the shows I watch over and over.

I love the variety of demons and moral dilemmas I get put through when watching Buffy, even after the episode is ending I love the feeling I get when I have to think about if the bad guy was really a bad guy.

The idea of all demons being one dimension bad guys seems incredibly boring

True..the common demon just possess a person which is quite dull, but Supernatural also has monsters which seem more like Buffy's demons. The monsters are true to all types of lore and there is really a great variety of them. The Supernatural boys also end hauntings and burn the bones of angry spirits. Be assured the show does not only consist of boring one dimensional possessing demons, it has a variety of monsters, hauntings, and angels. The storyline is anything but dull and it has kept a fickle (when it comes to tv) person like me hooked for six seasons.

I've never really picked up on any similarities between the two shows and I love both of them. I love the fact that on Supernatural they took things to a grand scale regarding heaven & hell and all that comes with it. I love the fact that on Buffy they never really said a definitive yes to either and kept it open to being more than one of each in the way of dimensions. I could never compare the two because both of them written fantastically and really delve in to mythology very well. Thats probably the only similarities I could say were great about both shows.

No similarities?! Did you read the thread..I posted some stuff about Buffy and Dean. I mean the characters seem quite alike not the plot or story AT ALL. I just mean Buffy n Dean, Giles and Bobby both play the "father figure", Anya and Cas..both gave up their powers for humans, Sam and Willow both went evil, had relationship with a werewolf. But if you don't see them that's fine..I don't want to force my opinions or ideas on anyone
