Why didn't the Mayor have Buffy arrested for the attempted murder of Faith. He could have got the police to keep her until after the ascension, that way he would have known that the ascension would not be interfered with.
 
It wouldn't have matter much, because he was planning her death anyway. Everyone's death. I don't think he thought Buffy could do much either, it's a big snake after all, and vampires, etc. aganist a Slayer, her friends and high school kids. Also, he arranged the Volcanologist's murder so that Buffy wouldn't know what's gonna happen and know how to stop it. Maybe he trusted that Buffy wouldn't even know what will happen. So I guess he didn't see that great danger in Buffy.
 
I agree, I think he thought he wouldn't have a problem dealing with her himself. Pride goeth before a fall and all that jazz. He probably figured he'd squish Buffy and the Scoobies easy peasy. Didn't count on the rest of their plan. It's like in Bond films where they leave Bond to be killed in a locked room where no one can see what he's up to and give him a chance to escape, when if they shot him when they had the chance it would have been sorted.
 
Besides all the reasons above the Mayor is fully aware of Buffy's abilities as the Slayer, so I think he would know full well that they could not keep her in jail if she didn't want to stay. After all look how easily Faith escapes from a maximum security penitentiary, does anyone think that Buffy couldn't escape from a holding cell in a Sunnydale. Or how easily her and Faith escaped from police custody in Bad Girls. So having arrested would have been counter productive from his point of view IMO.

I think he wanted to kill her. He was blind with grief for Faith and I think he wanted her right where he could get her straight away: Sunnydale High graduation.

Technically, him being mayor and all, yes he could probably do that...but I'm pretty sure he can't just do it for no reason. They had no proof that Buffy attempted to murder Faith other than Faith's word, and she was in a coma.

I'd agree with this. I also think that he would have wanted to make sure Buffy witnessed the slaughter of all the people she had spent the last three years trying to protect. This feeling would have intensified, I think, with his grief for Faith.
 
"Why didn't the Mayor have her arrested?" is one of those questions in Buffy that I ask myself, but the simplest answer is...then there would be no show. If the Mayor put Buffy in jail for 25 to life, the end. If the Turak-han were as strong as they were supposed to the second time around, the end. It's one of those things that had to be left out to enable a bigger plot to come into focus. I think...lol
 
He didn't arrest her because then

a) She would probably get away from the cops
b) the cops/media would be looking into why the Mayor was paying for a young girl's apartment (not good for election)
c) too much trouble filling a report and answering questions even if point A and B didn't exist. He didn't see her as a threat anyway.
d) the revenge thing a few of you pointed out

All in all, it would have been a dumb move.

I believe in the "That first turok-han was a champion, a lot stronger than other Turok-hans, like Spike and Angel are more able fighters than other vampires"-theory.
 
I agree that the mayor wanted to kill her himself to get revenge.

I also think that the main reason that that didn't happen is because we already have Buffy running from the cops at the end of season 2. Wouldn't have wanted it to happen again so soon.

Then they should have gave him a name. 😉

As for the topic at hand, I agree with others saying he wanted to kill her, not put her in prison.
