Buffy/Angel Novels and Comics

Okay, being a newbie to the whole Buffyverse, I've been trying to piece together which novels and comics take place in which seasons of Buffy and Angel. Some of the novels have editor's notes, and most of the comics indicate where the story within is set in continuity...but I'm lost without those disclaimers.

Can anyone help me? Basically, I'm looking for a website with a listing of the continuity of the Buffyverse...with all the novels and comics included (or a vast majority of them, anyway...).

Yeah, I've tried Google and Yahoo. Can't get anywhere. Lots of sites pop up, with lots of info on the books, but...no time line. 🙁
 
That's a pretty tall order, young man. The current library of Buffy and Angel novelizations, as well as comics, is vast indeed. It's going to be difficult to pin down the specific types you seek....although not impossible.

Take it one step at a time. Try Googling the names of these two authors: Nancy Holder and Christopher Golden. They are responsible for many of the early novelizations of Buffy. Perhaps starting there will lead you to the answers you seek.

I'm assuming the action would take place at that time or previous. You'd just have to match them to airing dates of the episodes. They have that information here -

Now you'd just have to consider what actually takes place in the book and match it to what's happening in the television verse.

We should try it here. Might be fun. Like give us the name of a book, along with some relevant information, and we'll try to place it in it's time period. I'd like to see if it could be done.

I'm not aware of any site that's done it, myself.

As far as the comics go, I'm pretty sure there is a specific season time period for those. I know I've heard them talking about it. I just can't remember where. I think it was at the Dark Horse site. I'm also pretty sure I've read interviews with Dark Horse crew that were discussing timeline.

It's got all of the release dates, so you could generlize what season the series was in at that time and base it off that.

Plus, from people who have read a majority of the books, they could probably tell you. I've read most of them, and based off the characters and what is going on in the story, I could probably place what season most of them are taking place in.
 
With all due respect, the comics have been exceptionally shitty. There are only a few worth checking out. The Buffy ongoing series had a pretty cool arc from 46-50. The mini-series Tales of the Vampires was decent, and had the first and thus far, only,post-Chosen Buffy adventure we've seen.

I vote also to start an "Extended Universe" timeline! It'll be fun. Well...it COULD be fun. 😉

WatcherWes--didn't like the comics? I've read a few of the collections, and they didn't seem all that bad. Some of them were written by Doug Petrie, and they're the best I've read so far. I dunno. I think they're good for what they are. Obviously not canon, but almost like an...like an ode to Buffy.

Actually I think he's probably talking about Buffyverse comics that came out post-Chosen, rather than comics that concerned post-Chosen events.

I didn't know about a recent Tales of the Vampires, but Watcher Wes knows his comics, so I'm going to choose to believe him. I'm going to assume the new IDW Angel and Spike comics haven't appeared on the shelves yet.

I do vaguely recall a Buffy comic that came out around the time of Season 7, but I don't think it was post-chosen. I think it had the same name as the Buffy game - Chaos Bleeds.

Personally I didn't hate the Buffy comics, I just wouldn't go out of my way to get one. It isn't like Fray. If a new Fray came out, I'd find a way to be first in line for it.

And Great Machine, is there any particular Book or Comic you're curious about the timeline on?
 
To be truthful i've never really bothered with the comics so far. The ones i've seen didn't really impress me enough to collect them myself.

The new Angel comics from IDW however seem a lot better and i'm seriously considering picking them up. Not to mention the fact that they are meant to be in the tv series continuity (at least until a future television episode or movie contradicts them anyway) so that makes them a lot more worthwhile to me.
 
My only beef with the IDW comics was the way they played with the media release of their coming out announcement to kind of suggest they were going to be canonical.

As more information came out though, it became obvious they were no more connected to the influence of Joss than the Dark Horse comics were.

I mean that was what got everyone interested in them, right? We hoped that maybe Joss was going to in some way tell us through those comics what happened in the alley. That's not what's going to happen though.
 
I've read a comment here and there suggesting that Joss is at least keeping an eye on what IDW are doing with these comics and making sure that they don't go far away from his intentions for the future of the individual characters. I think there was a mention of this in an article at Comics Continuum a while back actually. I'll try and Google it later tonight if i get chance (or if anyone else would like to try track it down and save me a little time then i won't object. 😉)

The way i'm going to look at these books is that they are a pseudo-canon representation of what happens after the alley in Not Fade Away and treat them as such until there is a more official answer to what eventually happened.

My impression is that Fox is doing everything in its power to make sure Joss is happy with what we do, and I know that Joss is looking at everything and making comments or thumbs-up, thumbs-down on stuff. Like Fox, we want Joss to be satisfied with these [comics] and to be glad that IDW ended up with the license.

In other Whedon-related rumors, there's some potential good news for Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans. Whedon is said to be in discussions with Dark Horse regarding an eighth season of Buffy, to be chronicled as a monthly comic.

And in answer to your above comment, pseudo as in "false but currently better than nothing". 🙂
 
Not really any specific books I'm thinking of...just want to know what I can read in my spare (read: Non-Buffy-Watching) time, is all. I'm working on the Book of Fours right now, as I've just started Buffy S5/Angel S2 and Fours is in S3 territory. (This is one of the few that has the season disclaimer before the copyright info...)

What do you think, though? We could work up a time-line here for the heck of it. I'm sure I'm not the first to want a guide for the EU stuff...my only problem is I don't want S5-7 to be spoiled, so I'd need someone who can place the books without telling me what happens...I'd be willing to assemble the list.

Let me know if you're willing to help (this is for anyone in general who can maybe assist...)
 
Tales of the Slayers is pretty timeless. Tales of the Vampires has a bit of spoilage for later seasons. Fray is fine. The first year or so of the Buffy ongoing was definitely season 3, but it was super shitty, so don't read it. I'd say steer clear of both the Buffy and Angel ongoing series that Dark Horse put out. They were just terrible. The writers weren't up to snuff and the art was lousy, except Cliff Richards stuff on the buffy ongoing.
 
I have to agree-the ongoing Dark Horse series were terrible-art and writing. Believe it or not, but at the very beginning, it was impossible to tell WILLOW and CORDELIA apart in art AND writing-it was actually donethat badly.

But Fray is, to me, a GREAT series, and every fan of the Buffyverse should definitely get there hands on a copy!
