Buffy being in a insane asylum

What are your thoughts of Buffy being in a Insane Asylum in Normal Again? Or finding out she was in one before she came to Sunnydale?
 
I think that Buffy's family thought that she needed help so they provided her with help that they were unable to. Even though vampires are real (for the TV show), what was her family supposed to do? I applaud Joyce and Hank for at least trying, many people who need or even ask for help do not receive it. They showed a type of strength that many parents do not.

Though, what does it matter that Buffy was in a Mental Institution? Does that change all of the good that she has done? Does it make you see as something else?

For me, I do not think it should matter that she was hospitalized. She is still a strong person, and that was just one more obstacle she was able to over come.
 
It didn't really come as a shock to me, which is not to say I was expecting it, because I wasn't. If one of my friends started saying that they slayed vampires and did the things that Buffy does, I'm sure I'd question their sanity.

I thought it was a fantastic idea to do an episode with Buffy in the hospital, it made Buffy, and the viewers question what was "real", a debate that goes on and on to this day.
 
Do you think that was one of the reasons why she was trying to decline her being the Slayer again in the first episode?
 
I thought it pushed the canon of what we knew to be true a tad, especially when I see scenes from episodes like "Killed By Death" when Buffy is ranting about vampires as she's being wheeled down the corridor. However, I'm willing to accept it. I dunno why Buffy would've told her parents about vampires, though. Out of fear? In the Becoming flashbacks I didn't get the sense that they were that close at that time with the fighting and all.

To be honest, I don't think the writers thought it through enough when they had Buffy say she was in an asylum before Sunnydale because she told her parents about vampires.

I mean, in the earlier seasons, there is no foreshadow about the asylum, and don't you think Joyce or even Buffy would have broughten it up when Buffy told her she was the slayer? And in Bad Eggs when Buffy mentioned vampires, Joyce responded as if Buffy was being silly, but if she was put in an asylum for talking about vampires before, don't you think Joyce would have been more concerned when Buffy mentioned them again in Bad Eggs?

I like to believe that Buffy's memories of being in an asylum before Sunnydale was just from the venome she was poisoned from. Because if it was really canon, well the writers didn't think it through enough, and it just seemed so random...

Just my two cents. 😛

Yeah, it came out of nowhere. I didn't like it at all. It doesn't make me think less of Buffy, but the writers just changing her past like that made no sense because there was never any signs of her being in an asylum before hand.
I thought it was stupid idea, that was just added without any actual history for it.

It would have changed how Buffy told her mom about Vampires "again"

Don't think of it as Becoming Part 1 happening twice. Think of it as a freaked out Buffy not knowing or understanding what being a slayer is at the age of 15. She was probably rambling and freaking out and just ranting about being the slayer and her parents freaked out and sent her away because they just didn't know what to do. It's always made sense to me that maybe her mom just repressed it...she probably felt bad for sending Buffy to that place. My mom has honestly done the same thing. I've told her that I've thought about suicide and she acts as if I've never brought it up, ever. When I made an actual attempt...she still didn't bring it up. She acted shocked, and she just didn't want to believe it, it was like that first conversation we had, never happened.

My point is, I don't see it as history being erased or ignored, because you can interpret it any way that you want. I see it as her mom, first freaking out and sending Buffy away...and then later telling Buffy to "stop being a slayer" and kicking her out because unlike the first time (when she was clueless, worried, etc) she knows it's true. I feel like all along (well since they moved to Sunnydale) Joyce has known that something has been off. I mean she knew that Spike and the others weren't a damn gang on PCP. I don't know if I'm making sense, but it's normal to put things at the back of your mind. To forget about something for so long, that it seems as if it didn't happen, but subconsciously you know the truth...it just takes awhile for it to actually hit you. Buffy also states that her parents "just forgot about it", they acted as if it never happened. Ugh. This is so hard to explain haha I've just seen my parents do this so it makes sense to me, ya know? I'll stop now.
