It's hard to imagine a church could afford to lost 50,000 women a year for almost 20 years!
But, yes, I love how we must blame someone. And I REALLY like how the church was losing all these people even before Buffy. They must have used their "witchy" powers to foresee the show coming in the future!

It makes me so angry when the church blames people/the media for a decline in interest. Maybe if the churches were a bit more modern and edgy people would go along more often. I'm catholic myself but don't go to church because I find it outdated. Jesus was way cool. He was alternative for his time and hey... We all know Jesus would have liked Buffy!

Right! They should blame the fact that their not interesting enough for the decline in interest!
If anything, how about the fact that Buffy is more "pro-active" about her problems than just sitting back and praying about it. I would guess people are thinking, "Gee, why not pray WHILE doing something about my problems".
That's kinda that way people I know do it!

Oh my god, I can't believe this. Not only is it ridiculous that Buffy etc be blamed for the decreasing interest in people going to church, but woman also seems to believe that shows that promote any sort of women empowerment is bad. How can empowered women be a bad thing at all? And ironically this is within the same passage that she states people believe church to be old-fashioned. Well, if they all have the same feelings as her (which I know they don't) then that presumption is pretty much on the money.

Also, erm, freedom of choice? She says these shows are influencing people to look into Wicca, but as human beings aren't we allowed to select whatever religion and belief system we choose? This is very frustrating and just goes to show that no matter how far the world grows there are always some annoying old-fashioned nutter butters out there.

Okay I don't know what this lady is on but I am a huge fan of Buffy (obviously) and I still attend Christian Masses every sunday. Buffy did not drive me to do Wicca but I also understand that if someone chose to practice Wicca (which I do have friends that do) It is their choice completely. This article is something that would make me not want to go to mass because I cannot understand how ignorant people can be.

That article is a load of crap, not only did this trend start long before Buffy was on the air, even before the movie, how many of these now hundreds of thousands of women actually watched the show, or made such a change in their lives because of it?

These are the same idiots that think every teenager in the UK is now some sort of spawn of Satan because they have a Harry Potter book (I've been called worse by the local priests for less lol).

Does she not think that maybe these women all got a life and spent the time they wasted on church on something more fulfilling? getting a life being a good idea for this person too...

I love this ridiculousness, whenever I see something like this, I flash the countles scenes in BtVS that heavily featured the 'power' of a christian cross through my mind - not exactly anti-church/religion really is it? Christmas is openly celebrated, evilness is discouraged/destroyed/openly taunted, the righteous are rewarded for protecting the innocent (see the shiny pretty umbrella) and churches are touted as places for goodness to thrive
I'm still mystified as to how any of those things DISCOURAGE anyone from attending church, unless maybe all these women have stopped attending church services that are held at night in dark alleys, cause they're worried about vampires now?
