IMO Buffy really needed a Cordelia, especially in the later Seasons. Becoming a major bitca might have been avoidable with the right people at her side. For me Buffy and Xander/Willow as friends could never have worked long term and it kinda didn't. Cordelia for me was absolutely needed because Spike and Anya just snark for snarking sake and they don't have the self-confidence to really get at Buffy. Cordelia expected her opinion to be heard and to be taken seriously when it really mattered and she had the confidence to go toe to toe with Buffy. Buffy also took her seriously in those moments because of their similiar pasts (as high school queens), there was a weird kindship there. If they had kept Cordelai on the show and developed her into S1 AtS (and halfway through S2 Ats) Cordelia they would have gotten even closer IMO.
