So, over the past few years or so while watching the show, I've been thinking a lot about what it would be like if it took place in today's "cell phone culture," as I like to call it, in the US. I think nowadays when writing a show, you just can't realistically have young characters interact without cell phones; you can't write a believable scene in which one character tries another on the land line and says, "oh crap I can't reach her!"
I know in season 7, cell phones are mentioned at least twice. But they aren't employed constantly, and if I'm not mistaken the *only* time a cell phone affects the outcome of a scene is during First Date when Xander texts Willow that he's in trouble, (or getting laid, lol). I know Angel tries to use a cell once and gives up, saying that they're probably put together by bored warlocks. I know I had a cell phone when I was 15 in '99 but that was mostly because my parents were/are a tad overprotective. But throughout the run of the entire series, cells in the US just weren't used like they are today. People didn't rely on them, and I think it probably wasn't until around the time of season 7 that they were really being widely used throughout the country and even then it was pretty recreational I think. Certainly not like today.

So, this is specifically what I was thinking about:
-What are some scenes that would be totally altered if Buff and the gang had cell phones? What about, specifically, "smart phones" with maps, etc? Obviously tons, but it's fun to get specific.
-How different of a show would Buffy have been if Joss couldn't get around the existence of and heavy reliance upon cell phones? Would it lack a lot of mystery? Were there enough moments that were so powerful or tragic simply because the characters couldn't reach each other? What would Btvs and Angel look like today if the characters had the power to text and Facetime each other?!

Here's an example I came up with for fun:

Becoming Part 2

Willow: There's no use arguing with me. Do you see my resolve face? (gives them her resolve face) You've seen it before. You know what it means. This can help Buffy. If we turn Angel back soon enough, we can stop him from ever awakening Acathla.

Oz: (gets up) Okay, Lemme just text Buffy real quick so she knows what we're doing.

I know this is all just a silly collection of "what if's," but I think it's really interesting to think about the fact that Buffy, as it exists, could not have been written today.

Interesting topic. I can't come up with something specific, I just want to mention this has bothered me before. I could be watching a show thinking "Man, it would be useful if they had a cell phone right now. WHY DON'T THEY!?" They're fighting monsters, sometimes they need back up, Buffy might need research, and they don't have cell phones?

I know they weren't that ordinary early on, but this is something that used to bother me, since they should have used them even though they're weren't that widely used. I thought "Finally!" when Dawn got a cell in Lessons.

Hush wouldn't be SUCH a disaster because of texting. There's more, but I'm on the bus and using my phone... I don't feel like thinking or typing... but I wanted to put that one out there

Totally, Hush couldn't really have existed at all. And see, you're on your phone!

Love the irony of you being on a phone while posting :D
24 uses mobile phones constantly and does it well, but there is a film called Scream 3 that suffers terribly from overuse of them. Almost every scene has someone on a phone.

I get the impression Whedon prefers to avoid using them regularly, as they have been mainstream devices while all of his shows have been airing.

True, true but I meant specifically for the Buffyverse since I really don't think he could have gotten around it if it took place today, given the specifics of the show

Aww the Scream movies are classic! Their use of phones is what makes it awesome! :D
I'm thinking that Buffy's phone beeping everytime she got a message or call would have been bad if she was sneaking up on demons.

You would think atleast people around would be on cell phones since its California especially....I can't remember seeing anybody on a cell in the background or anything...and what about pagers...I had one myself back in 97

It's funny seeing Buffy in season 1 using a pager. You think about it now, and it's so dated.

Umm, from Becoming again, when Angelus is keeping Buffy busy while Dru's gang storm into the library and start making a mess. Then Buffy realizes what is going on and what Angel is doing, and she RUNS to the high school. She runs! She could have used a cell phote back then. It would have prevented Kendra's death, and Giles' kidnapping, and Xander's broken arm, and Willow's coma.... And maybe so much more!

Ok, I'm home and can properly respond to this. There are SO many times watching the show I always think "this is why life with cell phones is easier."
The entire Becoming thing, definitely.
Welcome to the Hellmouth when Willow is with what's his face... that vampire?
Something Blue when Giles needs to get in contact with Willow about the spell
Hush
All of season 5. Buffy having a cell phone would have done wonders in season 5.

There's more but I'm not focused enough to think of them. I'll be back to this thread for sure!

Aye, but it was more a creative choice then anything. Cellphones were commen even among teenagers while Buffy was airing.

Not if it happened at the same time. Seemed to.

Christopher: I was a teenager in NYC when Buffy was airing and I can swear to you that we rarely if ever used our cell phones--until around 2002/2003, and even then I don't think most people *depended* on cell phones like the do today.

It's funny to think that almost every scene would have had drastically different results. I'm just seriously wondering what Joss would have done--he couldn't just pretend they didn't exist since our culture just revolves around them now and everyone would be like, "why didn't she just text..."--I mean, basically it would be an entirely different show, no?

Do you mean you don't remember "If the apocalypse comes, beep me"?! And the Initiative boys' and Buffy's pagers in season 4?

I do agree with Christopher that this was probably a creative choice, although there is cell phone use in Dollhouse. Still with teenagers specifically, you'd get a lot more cell phone use.

I'm thinking that a Demons, Demons, Demons iPhone app would be cool and really come in handy!

One of my favorite quotes regarding cell phones is when Angel's cell phone rings and Groo says "Angel, your coat is singing". I think of that a lot when I hear other peoples' cells ringing. 🙂

I agree that it was a creative choice not to use them very much, (excluding the occasional acknowledgement of their existence) but I don't think he could have gotten away with that today.

Oh, and what about Drusilla who was "ringing"? Such fun scenes.

I meant as what about pagers? Cause they had acknowledgement of pagers even though no cell phones lol...i was saying even i had a beeper and not a cell phone in the 90s lol...i'm not the best worder 😛

I'm sure it was on the commentary for this ep that Joss explained why he didn't use mobile phones, or why he didn't want to. Something along the lines of them being a 'get out of jail free' card, that it was too easy an option to use in a scene. Made for bad tv and all that jazz. Although by the time it got to season 7 it wouldn't be realistic to continue ignoring it.

Hush would have been soooo much less funny if they had had phones. Unless they had iPhones and had results like the ones on this site. 😉

We could have had scenes where the characters were using the GPS on their phones to find places like Cassie's house or whatever... It would have been way different. 🙂

Can you imagine, though, if cell phones had been such a big deal back then as they are now, how much interactive content we could have had for our phones? It would have been sweet. 😀

Ah, I forget that A) Buffy aired a year later here then in the US and B) Mobile technology is one of the few areas the UK is ahead of the US. I distinctly remember texting my friend to tell them about this great new Vampire show that had started, this was in 1998 on my then awesome Nokia 6110- I'd say that most kids in school had their own pay as you go phone by this point. What with Buffy being American though, I understand why mobiles were not really featured at that time.

Ah, I had a feeling that's what was going on! Yeah, we were a bit behind you on the cell phone craze, and a bit ahead on the Buffy :)
Every time I do a rewatch, I think "Damned, that would have been useful if they had cell phones!"

Over here cell phone became common around 2002 so it's normal for me to not see a lot of cellphone on Buffy.
And I'm happy cell phone are not used a lot, because some scenes/episodes would be less tragic/suspensful with cell phones (unless you make a serie which make texting look creepy like in Pretty little liars).
The use of cellphone was funny on Angel tough, because he's just so bad at using it :tongue3:
I giggle when they use pagers or Talkie Walkie in Buffy, it's so odd 😀

Examples of episodes that would have been different with a cellphone?

Becoming: Buffy wouldn't have run and we wouldn't have had that superb shoot where she runs in slow motion.
Wild at Heart: Oz could have texted Veruca to see where she was instead of following the wrong track. So he wouldn't have arrived almost too late to save Willow. Nah, that wouldn't have been as great.
Hush, like Zobo said.
Into the woods. Buffy ran like hell and arrived just a tad too late. It was much better than if she had just called. "Riley, don't go, I've changed my mind". No, it was much more *waw* to see her run and scream without being heard.
Wrecked. Tara and Dawn wake up. Nobody's home. What's best to watch: text "Where are you?" or "I wonder if something happened why aren't they here yet?"

In the case of Btvs, the non-use of cell phone added a lot, even tough nowadays cellphones are used creatively in series!

Boy... When you think about how much easier these scenarios would have gone if the gang had had cell phones, it makes these moments seem kinda silly, huh? LOL
