Buffy Characters That Were Never Supposed To Last

I knew about Spike and Oz but didn't realise they hadn't planned for Willow and Tara to get together

Well, they missed out Faith- which is the obvious one- and made a mistake with Oz. Seth Green was meant to be around a hell of a lot MORE after season 3 but he left to pursue other things.

Also they missed out Jonathan- a background/cameo character than morphed into a guest star, then a Big Bad (sort of) and then a could've been Scoobie.

Really the only 'fan favourite' on this list who was kept around because of the fans is Spike.

Ya, can't believe they missed Faith! But they were right about Oz being one of the character they thought of killing in Passion instead of Jenny, but you're also right, he was suppose to stick around longer in s4
I figured as much with Anya. She's so different in season 3 from what she turns into by late season 4-season 5. She had the brutal honesty thing, sure, but she had more of an edge and a an air of "humanity annoys me" about her; they seemed to inject her with a lot more perkiness later on.

I'm not sure Oz dying in Passion would have had much impact. Hadn't he only just been dating Willow for like a couple of episodes by then? Unless they would have had them dating earlier, or had Angelus kill him later on I guess.

Am with here. Part of the tragic aspect about Giles losing Jenny is that they had only just started to patch things up and clearly had deep feelings for each other. Feelings which at this stage Oz and Willow possibley couldn't have shared.

Can't believe they considered not involving Joyce. The double life of the Slayer depends on such things as how it impacts on her home life, and the issue of whether to keep it secret from her family. Also, Buffy and Joyce do seem a really natural mother and daughter.

For what it's worth there's some retcon here. I read an interview about how hard it was to chose a female love interest for Willow. They liked Amber Benson but Joss wanted someone petite and cute. He kept testing, and then someone pointed out that he already had her - and urged him to check out Amber again, and that was how she was cast. So Tara being Willow's lover was planned all along.

It was Marti Noxon who pointed out Amber.
All of these are really not surprising at all. They are all characters that originally had little impact on the overall plot of the series but gradually made a bigger impact on it.

Sure, but outside of the Scoobies you could say that about every character. Every long running show needs more than a few great lead characters to sustain. Joyce is different. Because not to have gone into Buffy's home life would have been a massive oversight.
