BUFFY VS DRACULA

The Good;
Lots of it, Buffy vs the dark prince (bator!). If I was to pick out a special performance it would be NB's excellent Renfield especially his wonderful Sesame Street impression.

The Bad;
?

Best line;
Buffy; "I'm standing right here!"

Women good/men bad;
Buffy rejects Dracula's male domination.

Jeez!;
The killing of the delivery men is vicious but it's there to remind you that Dracula isn't all slow seduction, he's as evil as any other vamp

Kinky dinky;
The whole thing is one big seduction of Buffy by Dracula. Also of course Giles 'making time with the Draccy babes' as Riley memorably puts it and seems to enjoy a good nuzzling. And Dracula and Joyce? Those Summer's girls, they have the worst taste in men. Anya's bikini is also a highlight, odd that the rest of the Scoobygirls are pretty covered up at the beach. Check out the sexy nightie Buffy just happens to choose to sleep in that night, makes her look like the heroine in a classic Hammer vampire film. Does she subconsciously choose it as she wants to please Dracula, hoping he'll come to her? Buffy tries to reassure Riley that Drac has no attraction for her but her declaration that there was 'no penetration' is a poor way to put it. She also says that she can't go back to Revello Drive as 'He got inside once', she means the house right? Unusually it's Riley who figures out Buffy is enthralled. Buffy seems to prefer being bitten and controlled to biting and feeding/being evil suggesting that when it comes to S&M she's more into the M than the S.

Captain Subtext;
Joyce bemoans the perils of dating in Sunnydale and tells Will and Tara she feels like giving up on men altogether (Jowillta anyone?). She seems unaware of their relationship although this might change in The Real Me which we'll talk about then. Joyce seems lonely with Buffy at college but she'll soon have Dawn to cure that. Willow and Tara just advise her to avoid pale-skinned men in capes. Oddly Willow seems extremely attracted to Dracula 'Long slow neckbites that last for days' which perturbs Tara rather and adds to the bi-Willow theory (and the 'very naughty girl behind the softer side of Sears theory'). Xander comments that everyone knows about Willow and Tara but would still like to hear more about their love life. The first of the Riley/Spike bonding, Spike refers to Riley as 'cowboy' which he was in Restless. .
Xander refers to himself as Dracula's 'man-bitch' and this is a homosexual subtext that is greatly expanded upon in the comics.

Guantanamo Bay;

Scoobies to the ER;

Where's Dawn?
Here's Dawn! When you're accustomed to seeing MT on 'Gossip Girl' and '17 Again' you forget how young she was when she started on Buffy, I remember seeing her for the first time and thinking "Oh, it's Harriet the Spy" which was one of my favourite books when I was younger and I quite liked the movie too. Oddly enough the first time Buffy finds her she's snooping about in her room.

Missing scenes;
Rumoured-Dracula "You are born of the darkness"
Buffy; "Whoa, not born of the darkness pal, born of the Joyce thank you very much"

Apocalypses; 5,

Wheldon Cliches (with kind permission from Boo)

Notches on Scooby bedpost: now I know we've always wondered exactly what happens between Buffy and Dracula when the screen goes dark so I'm going to put him down as a possible? But you know, what I've always wondered is does anything happen between Dracula and Joyce? We do know that Anya and Dracula used to be involved in her demon days.

Questions and observations;
Very interesting. Once again Buffy rejects the traditional role of the horror heroine and be seduced into being a vampire by Dracula. But is there something between them? Maybe. But again it's Buffy's family and friends that anchor her, the traditional Slayer without love in her life might well have surrendered. But Buffy is about saving rather than the kill despite her feral hunting.
Jelly doughnuts again, nice little gag when Riley offers it to Buffy. This is the third time Buffy will have been bitten by a vampire. Dracula notes the previous bitemarks, The Master's or Angel's? Riley observes that no one in Sunnydale seems to have noticed this big castle just outside of town. Buffy mocks Anne Rice for the second time, such a pity they never have a chance to knock Twilight. Reputedly Dracula was going to be played by Freddie Prince (aka Mr SMG) but he dropped out. As with Adam, Dracula hints to The Slayer's demonic nature which we will discover in 'Get It Done'. We have hints that Xander is going to make moves to get out of the cellar. Dracula has the same powers as he has in the book which make him far superior to the average vamp.
So what if Buffy had surrendered to Dracula or Drusilla or whoever? Would a vamped Slayer be evil? Or would they still be the Slayer no matter what? What would feasting on Slayer blood do to the vamp, is Spike's unusually human nature due to him feeding on the Chinise Slayer? Lot of fanfic on the subject and all with a happy ending, most based on the internet rumour that in season 5 Buffy would be vamped and form her own undead Scoobygang whilst Faith would be released from jail to lead the Scoobs against her. Eventually Buffy would either have her soul restored by sorcery (like Angel) or bite Dawn and be returned to normal by The Key's magic blood.
Buffy is apparently very famous in the supernatural world, the most successful Slayer ever. Love to see Spike and Drac's backstory? Riley says that he's lived in Sunnydale for a couple of years now so that probably means the Initiative were up and around at very least throughout season 3.

Marks out of 10; 9/10

Haha, Xander was more then funny in this episode. And Anya, how she was obsessed if Dracula remembers her.

The only thing I don't like is Riley's begining of jelaousy, that is the main substance of their relathionship in season 5, and that drives me crazy.

I liked how Buffy showed us her strong female figure, and once again turned down man, and showed us how she can beat him, and he is Dracula 🙂 And I really liked her pants 🙂

9/10 for me 🙂

Hee-hee, I love Xander's Count impression. The best line I reckon.

A good episode...and I remember being really confused about the sudden appearance of Dawn, especially when Joyce goes " Buffy, if you're going out, why don't you take your sister?"

I was "Huh?"

9/10.

I was so confused by Dawn's appearance too! I remember thinking, haven't people specifically discussed her only child status before? What the heck???

Lol at your "Where's Dawn? Here is Dawn!". I wasn't surprised because I knew it before I watched it. But I just lent my friend this episode DVD today. I can't wait to see her face tomorrow. 😀

Well, good to learn that BtVS has own version of Dracula. He's kinda cool, though.

Even though I think this episode is a little crumby, it really was an enjoyable episode and had me laughing out loud throughout. Some memorable lines were Xander's "Wheres the freak that turned me into spider eating man bitch?" and I loved Buffy's line "You know what I am? Bored."

How come that after tasting Dracula's blood Buffy snaps out of his thrall? The slayer blood has some powers over vampires: The Master broke out of his magical confinement and Spike broke out of the influence of The First. So in return, the vampire blood has power over slayers? It would be so easy: Buffy you're under a spell! Bite a vamp!.

XANDER: You know what? I'm sick of this crap. I'm sick of being the guy who eats insects and gets the funny syphilis. As of this moment, it's over. I'm finished being everybody's butt-monkey!

Oh and Buffy cannot sleep well until she gets more hunting.

I heart the butt-monkey line. Poor Xander and his funny syphillis.
I'm watching Buffy with my husband for his first time, but he wasn't terribly confused about Dawn because my kids love the musical so much that he knows all the songs by heart already. So he's heard Dawn sing "See, my sister's the slayer" a bunch. We just watched last night where they explained she's the key so now he knows the details but even before that he knew there was some explanation.

Xander was hilarious in this episode. 🙂

I really like this episode actually. I love that it starts with them having fun on the beach, that was nice to see!

And it pays great homage to one of my favourite novels! 😀

And yes, Xander steals this episode!

A point made in one of the comics is that being the Slayer is not being a killer, it's about saving. Therefore Buffy digs all of Dracula's dark sexual energy (we see why in Get It Done) but she doesn't want to kill, that's the difference, when she tastes his blood it snaps her out of it

OK. Vampire blood has healing power over the slayers and Buffy cannot sleep well until she gets more saving then.

Buffy hunts because she's more in touch than ever with the Slayer essence after Primeval, during season 5 her quest is to understand and control it. Tasting Drac's blood makes her appreciate the awful nature of real evil and that snaps her back, letting her Buffy part dominate the Slayer part once more

Great episode to begin with. I liked the fact that her Angel-bite scar is still there. And Buffy breaking out of Dracula's control was amazing. She kicks some serious ass after all. She is THE Slayer!

And also ; "I'm standing right here" was hilarious. LMAO! 🙂

I liked how true it was to the book. I mean, they got the powers, the annoying male competitor, the babes, the Renfield. Not exactly word-for-word, but with some clear references to the actual book. Xander and his bug-eating was hilarious. Actually, Xander and his everything was hilarious! 😀

My favorite parts:

DRACULA: I have no interest in you. Leave us.
XANDER: No, we're not going to (in Dracula's accent) "leave you." And where'd you get that accent, Sesame Street? (ala the Count) Vun, two, three -- three victims. Mwa ha ha!
BUFFY: Xander, I'm pretty sure that's Dracula.
[Xander hides behind Buffy]

and later:

DRACULA: You are strange and off-putting. Go now.

Just saw this ep again. I always get punched in the gut at the end when we have the sudden reveal of Dawn. I can remember, the first time I saw the series, being big-time WTF, when episode after episode, we don't get an explanation for Dawn. Guess that's part of the Joss Whedon allure, how he must relish in breaking the typical television series rules and gives us something new, fresh and, sometimes, perplexing.
