Doomed
The Good;
Some good fights and character advancement and some excellent comedy. Favourite bit off all has to be Spike's 'American' accent (all the more brilliant when you think that this is an American playing an English character playing an American)
The Bad;
Riley says the demon is 3 metres tall which would make it nearly ten feet and seems way too much (drug dealers aside americans never did learn to use the metric system). He estimates it at 120kgs. How exactly? Buffy's leap down the Hellmouth beggars belief but maybe the laws of physics work differently there.

Questions and observations;
Percy back, hooray. Last time we'll see him unfortunately. Xander is now a pizza delivery boy just as Cordy predicted. Interesting that just as Spike says, Willow and Xander at the end are still the High School Nerds watching TV in their basement. Oddly enough Giles tries to 'Scully' Buffy both in this ep and in Hush. Marc Blucas appears in the titles for the first time. In many ways this is making the point that Xander and Willow are still the geeks they were in High School, Willow is lost at the party, she doesn't have Oz any more and doesn't have Tara yet. Reputedly the scene where Buffy objects to Giles' drawing of her was actually improvised by the cast.
Riley says they track demons by their phermones, very like how Adam Baldwin's MiB's track the alien in Predator 2. Buffy refers to Faith and says that Slayers don't live past 25 (she and Faith both have now, they're the most successful Slayers ever). It's actually Xander who figures out the demons are the sacrifices. Quite a long ep coming in at 42 minutes (Amends is the longest at nearly 43).
Marks out of 10; 6/10, nothing wrong with it but it comes after a very strong couple of eps
 
Everything with Spike in this episode is really funny. The new look, the suicide attempt, the speech to Willow and Xander and the best part, what he says to them at the end of the episode in the basement(to save puppies!) :lmao::lmao:

As for the story, well you got Riley and Buffy relationship at an halt, most of the dialogues between them wasn't anything great to be honest. I do agree with Riley though, Buffy's reason for not wanting to be with him was kinda hazardous since she just expected things to go the same way they did with Angel. Sure Riley wasn't a 'normal' guy but he wasn't a vampire either which meant that the same reasons that made Angel leave Buffy wouldn't happen with Riley. It just didn't really make sense to me.

Is it me or too many apocalypses just make it cheesy? If it was as easy to end the world as shown in this episode(and even a few others) then it would have happened at some point long ago. The last scene with the fight against the demons and Buffy jumping down the hellmouth was really cheesy too! I mean, come on. They could have ended it differently, this was way too unbelievable(even for a show like BtVS).

Overall it was decent, but without Spike, not so much.

It's not the best episode, but it's not the worst. Really not liking Riley. Bleh, yuch. I can't believe Joss likes the Briley theme song over the Bangel one! (as he says in the commentary for Hush).

Spike is absolutely the best part, though! Although, there's a bit of a continuity error with his clothes. Some time between going out with Xander and Willow are going to the high school, he puts on pants. When does he have time for that?

Agreed. They tried to play the whole "end of the world...again" thing for laughs, but it just came off as stupid. Not a great episode in my opinion.
 
The best bit about this episode is when Spike says to Willow and Xander something along the lines of "uh vampires lets kill them for the greater good".:biggrin3: That line always cracks me up.

By the way for all you Spike haters this episode epitomises how great a character he is. The comedy value he brings in this episode outshines anything else.
 
I loved this episode for the Briley angst and Spike comedy gold.

I thought the dialogue between Buffy and Riley here was excellent.

Angel metaphorically ripped out Buffy's heart, stomped on it, and set it on fire. And then Parker destroyed what was left of her trust and innocence and made a mockery of her, making her feel dirty almost sexually ashamed and foolish for ever having even considered being emotionally vulnerable.

When Buffy first contemplated seeing Riley it was in an "Eh, he'll do" kind of way. The first hint for her that there might be something between them, some sparkage or depth, was at the end of SB when she said "you have a lot to learn about women" and he replies "you're gonna teach me". She had that "oh boy" look on her face like that time Angel let her keep his leather jacket because "it looks better on you". She said in Goodybe Iowa that she had expected Riley to be Mr. Joe Normal and they were supposed to do dumb stuff together. It was supposed to be Relationship Light.

She didn't think she could survive another hearbreak or that she had the emotional energy for another intense relationship that was inevitably doomed. "It's just doomed and I can't do doomed again."

Riley was still so sheltered despite being a Marine, Squad Leader, and US government agent. He still was that Iowa boy that called people "sir" and "ma'am", took his vitamins, dressed and up and went to church, and was disappointed that more people didn't recycle. He hadn't yet had his heart broken, his illusions shattered, his trust betrayed, his identity and life purpose questioned, or truly come face to face with real evil and had it affect him.

Favorite line: "Mostly, I think you want to stay in the dark place because maybe it's safer there." (he was putting his knowledge as a Psychology grad student to use!)

It's a truly wonderful performance from JM, spike is great value here where he finds a role for himself as a demon fighter but before he falls for Buffy.
As for Buffy, she's careful with Riley but I think she truly loves him, it's just not the great romantic love she has with Angel and arguably Spike
 
I think that is true. She loved and was attracted to Riley but it didn't have the same intensity as what she had with Angel & Spike.

I love when Spike corrects Xander & Willow and says that it is Buffy that fights the forces of darkness. Spike respected and admired Buffy. It was pretty obvious by S2 & S4.

It was such a great moment for Spike when he realized he could hurt demons.
