DOUBLEMEAT PALACE

The Good;
Very little, a very weak episode. Actually our first introduction to Halfyrek and the scene between her and Anya is wonderful. Also like Xander's advice to Dawn that if Buffy can't ever have a proper career outside Slaying Dawn can do it for her. Some nice comedy too with Xander eating the burger and the 'Hi, I'm Troy McClure' style corporate training video.

The Bad;
The list goes on. I think if Xander had been working in the DMP everyone would have loved this but we don't like seeing Buffy humiliated (in a non sexual sense)

Best line;
Buffy; "The double meat medely is people. Well, probably not the chicken part but who knows! Who knows!"

Women good/men bad;
Actually it's pretty disturbing that Halfyrek comments most of the time she's not even sure she's cursing the right guy. Love the way that every good point Anya states about Xander is twisted into a negative by Hally. Amy also shows her true colours implying that she's bitter at not having been deratted earlier.

Jeez!;
The severed finger and Manny's severed foot. Note how Buffy is now quite happy to include Dawn in the emergency meeting and show her some of the nastier sights of life.

Kinky dinky;
Actually I think Buffy and Spike against the trash trailer must rate as the most unerotic sex scene in the history of TV, even the most avid Spuffers must admit it's positively depressing. Now as we've all wondered before during 'Anne' surely a girl as beautiful as Buffy can get a better job? (or as Xander put it hasn't she ever met 'any nice pimps'?). 'Pretty Woman' or at very least doesn't Sunnydale have a Hooters or Spearmint Rhino? (or did Mayor Wilkins not allow them as not in keeping with his vision of the place? Even he with all his power couldn't stop streetwalkers to judge by 'Innocence' despite what the Gorch's say in Bad Eggs). Ok when I originally wrote this it was because I was making fun of the Hollywood cliche of a girl as beautiful as Buffy working in fast-food (Last Action Hero anyone?). However after watching Dollhouse or Morena Bacahra's character in Firefly you get the idea that Joss is actually quite keen on the idea of prostitution? Exhibit A; Eliza Dushku as a dominatrix scene? Still after Belle du Jour not as unthinkable as it once might have been.
Then again she's thin, petite, beautiful, flexible, she'd be an awesome magician's assistant. Even got her own identical twin with the Buffybot which you need for many of the classic illusions. The Geeks (and Xander) also like the Vulcan woman from Enterprise, what a suprise. Nowadays it would be Summer Glau as The Big Bang Theory proves. Anya and Halfrek both comment on Xander's large upper arms which makes sense if you're a construction worker (Nic Brendon bulks up noticeably in the final 2 season but I prefer slimmer Xander from the earlier seasons)

Captain Subtext;
As is commeted upon in a later ep the worm thing that emerges from the old lady's head is just one giant penis. It spits it's goo at the straight (or bi girl to judge by the comics) making her helpless but the lesbian sees it, screams and runs away before decapitating it with a vagina shaped cooking instrument. And Buffy's new boss is called Lorena (Bobbit?)

What the fanficcers thought;
Cash strapped Buffy (and indeed any and all of the female characters) turning to prostitution is a staple of a lot of adult fic both before and during DMP and indeed afterwards. My favorite has Buffy eventually recruiting the rest of the Scoobygirls into her new profession turning Revello Drive into a high class bordello with Joyce as the madam then trasforming her post-Chosen Army of Slayers into an Army of Slayer/Hookers to fund the new Slayer academy.

Questions and observations;
Surely the authorities must inspect the DMP's produce, don't they have a problem with false advertising? Considering how nicely the Geeks tricked out their headquarters with all the money they stole couldn't Buffy and co sell it to raise some cash? Doesn't Amy remember that she turned HERSELF into a rat and indeed left Buffy and Willow to burn at the stake to do so? Love Dawn's kitten t-shirt. Dawn says she's eaten a lot at the DMP, it doesn't show. I reckon Dawn should be a Doctor, that way she can patch up the other scoobs as necessary. Also note that the Yanus head from Halloween is still in the Magic Box.
Would Buffy have survived without Willow's arrival? I think so, Slayer headling was obviously dealing with the paralysing agent when she arrived. Anyone else think that Lorena reminds them a lot of Ellen Degenerees with a little of Lynette from Desperate Housewives?
Marks out of 10; 3/10, pretty damn terrible compared to what Buffy can achieve

you're still make me sick with tis review
The vilian in this episode was so stupied. It's my number one worst vilian. But it had it funny moments, and I'm sure glad I don't eat burgers. And Buffy/Spike scene was just.. well jucky!

4/10

Why would you want to see Buffy humiliated in a sexual way?

Why are you preaching prostitution over a honest job and why are you insulting people working at fast-foods?
However after watching Dollhouse or Morena Bacahra's character in Firefly you get the idea that Joss is actually quite keen on the idea of prostitution? Exhibit A; Eliza Dushku as a dominatrix scene?
I only saw once each Dollhouse episode, but some other people interpreted as being about the dehumanizing that occurs in human traffic

You're taste in fanfic is truly disturbing.

Joss Whedon received the third annual 2009 Outstanding Lifetime Achievement Award in Cultural Humanism from he Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard and the Harvard Secular Society.

Guess those silly Harvard guys were wrong, 'cause he's pro-prostitution and we already have the proof: Saturn said so!

Firstly I don't want to see Buffy humiliated in any way but I was referring to the Buffy/Spike sex and the waking up scenes afterward. I'm not serious in my suggestion I'm just making fun of the Hollywood cliche of such a beautiful girl in such a low paying position, like the female scientist always being a supermodel but we know she's brainy because she has glasses ('Not another High School movie' made the point better than I ever could).
Not insulting those who work in fast food but not insulting prostitutes or their clients either (including Riley, Liam/Angel and David Nabbit plus possibly Wes, Giles and Xander). Prositution perfectly legal in plenty of parts of the world including bits of the US. Never judge people by their promiscuity or lack of it.
As for Dollhouse it's position is ambiguous, it doesn't glamourise but it doesn't condemn either.I always think of the ep where the guy hires Echo to imitate his dead fiance on their anniversary and he and Ballard have this great debate over if what he's doing is wrong. In the end Echo herself insists on returning to finish her assignment. And of course in the end Ballard joins the Dollhouse.
Hey I don't write fanfic and I don't read much but I accept it EXISTS, I don't read snuff or male slash or vore etc but I don't pretend it's not out there. The fic in question is kinda schizo in that it's kinky beyond belief beyond belief yet has a happy ending for everyone. The author has something of a reputation as an incredibly sentimental pervert.
I don't see that proposing legalising prostitution is necessarily anti-humanist?
As for the monster, yes it's stupid, much like Teeth in Tabula Rusa but I think worth it for the payoff gag between Tara and Willow next ep. And as a fan of subtext you can't much more blatant that it!

The wig lady is creeepy! I never really liked this episode much. I'd give it, 6/10.

ha ' And cut way back on the cat.
Cat?!
Just kidding. Probably'.

Yeah, I usually just skip to the scene with Spike, because it's sweet how he says she's too good for that place. Then I stop watching. I'm not fond of the sex by the dumpster scene. Otherwise the episode is kind of unnecessary.

And about Buffy getting a better job... I have a Bachelor's Degree and I'm working on my Masters, and I can't even get a minimum wage job right now. It doesn't seem too unrealistic to me that she can't find a better one. I'm not as attractive as SMG, but I've been told I'm pretty. Maybe Buffy is like me and just doesn't have the connections.

Firstly I don't want to see Buffy humiliated in any way but I was referring to the Buffy/Spike sex and the waking up scenes afterward.
The whole Buffy/Spike in S6 was portrait as unhealthy/bad decision during some stage of depression for both parts, but I consider offending your constant reminder that Buffy working in fast-foods is humiliating.
I'm not serious in my suggestion I'm just making fun of the Hollywood cliche of such a beautiful girl in such a low paying position
Saying that you're not serious about it does not excuse your continuing insulting remarks.
Not insulting those who work in fast food but not insulting prostitutes or their clients either (including Riley, Liam/Angel and David Nabbit plus possibly Wes, Giles and Xander).
Your constant portrayal of working in fast-foods as similar to prostitution is offensive.
Prositution perfectly legal in plenty of parts of the world including bits of the US. Never judge people by their promiscuity or lack of it.
If and where it is, I'm sure is strictly regulated within some confined locations and not advertised randomly on boards with teenage membership.

I thought Ballard made a compromise not being pro-prostitution, but I'm not an expert.

Except this is your favorite.

Oh, God!

I like this episode. I don't understand why people hate it. I always find it relate to me when I do part-time jobs.

And this episode is funny. DMP's outfit, Xander eating burger, Anya meeting Halfrek, etc. 😀

Oh, God!

Firstly feliophile here so less of the catburgers, still grieving for Miss Kitty!:nibble6:
I never skip any ep, pretty much a completist (as you might have gathered from my 255 reviews!). If there was any ep I'd skip it would be First Impressions on Angel and Bad Eggs on Buffy.
Yeah, the dumpster scene really is....just hard to watch, even for the Spuffers.

Ok now Mr Soft;
Again no offence to fast food workers but please look at Buffy in her DMP outfit and tell me she isn't humiliated? And I'm not advertising anything, just mentioning that they exist. That's like saying I shouldn't mention the Halloween films in my reviews because they're 18 rated?
I like the fic in question partly because it's so outrageous, well written and quite funny but also because it has such a happy ending (Anya, Amanda, Eve, Joyce, Tara etc all alive and happy hookers). It also made me think, before reading it my opinions were similar to yours but it changed my mind, Buffy not only saving all the other hookers but her clients include severely handicapped people, in-the-closet married lesbians, deformed war veterans etc I'd never thought of it before but it showed a different side to it, that sometimes it is a NEED just as Adele on Dollhouse claims
Is saying 'Oh god' in regard to humanism supposed to be ironic? Surely the social benefits of legalising prostitution are clear to all? (better safety for workers and clients, regulation, reduced health risks, people not bothered in the street, not trafficking/organised crime etc).
Tell you what, if you want to continue the discussion PM me because the the mods might object to this subject matter on the open board even though we're talking in broad terms (as indeed they did on ********* and the 'Prostitution in the Jossverse' thread on Buffyforums).
