Buffy ep by ep; LESSONS-times almost caught us, my friends

I loved the high school years and really wanted to like this episode ... a return to high school. But it just didn't work for me. I am indifferent to Wood, the zombies are stupid, and Dawn's friends never appear again and are therefore pointless.

However, I will say the scene with the First and Spike was absolutely brilliant. I wish the rest of the season had lived up to the potential displayed in those few moments.

Those are exactly my views on the merits of the end of the episode and the scenes that came earlier.
The last scene with the first is just perfect. I always rewatch it again and again and again and again and again! *What's the music playing, by the way?*
Seeing Glory, The Mayor, Drusilla, The Master.... (I love all the small performances, but I must say, I'm always more impressed by the Master. I mean, what a voice, what an intonation! Almost makes me want to join the First!)
The first time I saw the episode, I was, haem, young so when Buffy appeared I was like "EEEEEH?" *big shock*

Wood looks kinda evil in this episode. With his big big evil smile! He really looked suspect, and it didn't go any better til we learn that he is a Slayer's son.

And when Xander arrives at the home with his big new shinny car, I can't help thinking "Who's the Zeppo now? Certainly not the Xandster!"
 
I remember thinking when I started this episode 'Oh, yay. We're going back to high school'. I'm not sure why because by Season Three I was really looking forward to seeing my favourite characters in the real world. Maybe it was because I wanted to relate to Dawn on a more teenage-y level and seeing her in school could help with that.

I'm big on watching teens struggle through high school. The whole normality thing is what I love about Buffy. When I started watching it had nothing to do with the evil villains or the girl saving the world. It was how normal and relatable the plots and characters were. So, I think that's why I am so happy to be back in High School and why I was THRILLED when Buffy got a job there.

The begining scene was amusing. And I am glad that Dawn is finally being allowed to help with the whole Slaying thing. It'll make her a lot less easily disposed. And it'll get her out of trouble quicker now that she can get herself out of trouble instead of always having to wait for Buffy or someone of the sort. And the essence of the 'training' scene was funny. What with the Vampire who supposedly had 'The Power'. Yeah, right. I'm finding that we encounter a lot of somewhat dimwitted Vampires in our time with Buffy.

Loved Dawn's first speech to the class. She was well on her way to being a popular, funny, sweet girl before Buffy ran in. I was cringing after that because I know how that would feel. Poor Dawn, she was doing so well. Stupid, wacky old high school.

The first scene, with the Potential and all that, didn't do it for me. I know it's hinting at what's to come but I was just like...'give me the characters I care about please'. You know what I mean?

I do wonder what happened to those friends Dawn seemed to have made near the end. They looked well on their way to become the younger generation of 'Scoobies'. But maybe not, as we don't seem to encounter them again and Dawn seems to become a floater amongst cliques. Not really having any firm friends or anything unless someone is introduced like Cassie was for that one episode.

This episode was great. When I first watched I was like..."yay, humour and happiness again...kind of'. But first seeing Spike was a bit of a shock for me. Seeing what the soul was doing to him. Wow.
 
Don't have time to read this whole thread right now, but I just watched Lessons and loved it. Great season opener. The early scene in Istanbul was exciting even though it was a WTH is going on moment. Giles looked Tokein-ish, dontcha think? Loved them going back to Sunnydale High. SMG looked so good...mom hair my ass LOL! Too bad we never see those kids again, it would've been nice for Dawn to have had her own "Scooby Gang", although with the Potentials, there were already a lot of extra characters in season 7. Still, poor Dawnie, no friends, no love interest. Although I liked Dru's appearance, I still think that it should've been Angelus, he was the true Big Bad of season 2. I wonder if they just couldn't negotiate that crossover, they were lucky they got the ones they did in the final season. Still, DB as the First as Angelus would've been sooo cool.

There really are a lot of good quotes in this one.

This one reminds me of Andrew's "documentary":

Wow, I was way off base with the To Serve Man joke. I thought Dawn thought it was something inappropriate and it turned out to be a cook book instead 😛 :lmao:
 
Someone earlier in this thread mentioned Dawn starting high school, but actually she is a sophmore in season 7. So, I've always wondered which high school she attended in season 6? A neighboring district? Or were freshmen/ninth graders separate, maybe still in middle school? I don't think it is ever said.
 
I think there were alot of great moments in this episode. I love how Robin was pretty on the fence with "is he good or evil?" I was always teetering on that one. Dawn seems WAAAAY more grown up. Spike as crazy worked for me. And I agree, the family unit between Xander, Buffy and Dawn was fantastic.

But what makes the episode for me is the last 2-3 minutes of the episode with the Bad Guy Morph. It gives me goosebumps EVERY SINGLE TIME. "Not the word. Not the bang" serious chills... It's one of my favorite things about Buffy Season 7.
 
Oh god yes I totally agree. Those last few minutes of that episode simply blew me away. 😀
