The Freshman (or Freshwoman?)

The Good;
Very clever ep, it's interesting that we really feel for Buffy, we're used to her being invincible but here she's bested by an ordinary vamp and it shakes her and us (note that people refer to her as 'Willow's friend'). Of course, our girl comes back and it's possible she was only off her game because Kathy had been sucking her soul. Great opening gag with the vamp behind Buffy and Will and it's amazing how funny the old comedy cliche of the smallest person carrying the biggest load can be.

The Bad;
It is disturbing to see Buffy so upset but the whole idea of putting the heroine in peril is to see her overcome
Best line;
Xander; You're sitting here alone looking like you've been diagnosed with cancer of the puppy
Wheldon Cliches;

Character death; poor Eddie. Buffy says it's been a 'Slay-heavy summer'.
Shot;
no Scoobies but the vamp tranqulised at the end
Tied up;
No but Eddie's favourite book is 'Of human bondage'
Knocked out;
No although Riley says he has a slight concussion
Women good/men bad;
Professor Welch considers herself the 'evil bitch monster of death'. Sunday tells Buffy she 'fights like a girl' (which is maybe why Buffy beats her?)
Jeez!;
The idea of Sunday and co not only killing the weaker students but mocking them is awful.
Kinky dinky;
Buffy thinks 'Of human bondage' is porn which she's 'trying to cut down on'. Xander spent the summer working in a male strip club kitchen (and possibly on stage?) Read a great fanfic once where Wes pays for his motorcycle by working in the same club under the stage name 'Huge Grant'. Buffy compares Giles to Hugh Hefner and he now has the lovely Olivia as his own girl next door. Buffy thinks Giles shouldn't have a private life because he's old and it's gross which is a bit of a blow for Guffy. When Xander is all alone he sometimes wonders what Buffy is wearing. Willow compares learning to a sexual act
Calling Captain Subtext;
Xander and Oz don't hug because they're too manly. Buffy comments that she hopes her mum has a 'funny aneurysm' which is foreshadowing indeed as is the reference to Joan Armatrading's 'Once more with feeling'.
Guantanamo Bay;

Scoobies to the ER;
No, Buffy's arm is hurt but not broken (and even if it was would heal pretty quickly)
Where's Dawn?
Interesting scene where Buffy goes home to find Joyce is storing stuff in her room. You wonder why she didn't put it in Dawn's room which isn't occupied yet?

Questions and observations;
Interestingly Buffy hasn't accepted Christ as her personal saviour, the series has always had an ambiguous relationship with Christianity. Five Scoobies at this stage, Buffy, Giles, Xander, Willow and Oz. Buffy shows great tactical awareness, Faith or Kendra might have fought to the death even when they know it's hopeless, Buffy retreats, get's reinforcements and defeats the bad guys. Great gag where Buffy answers the phone, we know it's actually Angel phoning just to hear her voice. Buffy just walks into Giles, doesn't even knock.
Marks out of 10; 6/10 I think although that might be a little generous

ok, simultaneously reviewing Angel season 1 over on that board so please join in there too

I really don't like this episode. I don't know why but I was never fan of it. First episode without my beloved Angel. This was a hit for me. But Buffy was too dark for me here. She was lost, alone, like in season 6. I don't like that side of Buffy. But I do like when she think she saw Angel in the bar, and the funny fact is that was really David 🙂

was it David??? really? I was certain!!!I could see his face!!!Oh sweet Angel!
So you're onto my least favourite season and this is my least liked episode. Sunday was just annoying and reminded me too much of Harmony, they could be sisters.

It has a very different feel than that of the earlier seasons but is it just me?

Really? What's the source for that info?
I think the whole idea was for Buffy to be removed from the certainties of her old life and placed in a whole new world. Of course our girl comes good as we always knew she would. Sunday was fun but I think she's better as a one ep deal

Interesting opening!!!Another season opens and Buffy feels kind of alone...like she felt in season 3 opening. Is Buffy always afraid to confide in her friends? Willow is so excited and poor Buffy is so confused...she doesn't feel special here in Uni!

Well Buffy's feelings are very familiar to me. The first time I stepped foot in MedSchool I was like...what a big building!!! And I have a problem with finding my way in big places(disorientation lol) so i was feeling a little lost! And noone knows you in Uni! It's a whole new world!

I like Buffy kicking ass in the end! "It's not broken...it's hurt" Isn't that metaphorical? She is not broken but hurt.Her mom changed her room, she was kicked out of a class, a guy she met was turned into a vampire,plus Kathy...no comments!

And Sunday...I didn't hate her but the moment she broke Buffy's "Class Protector" umbrella, i was like "you bitch!".

I guess it was a good intro to the season. It kind of presents a metaphor of what it'll be like... Buffy's weak, and then she overcomes. But I don't like seeing Buffy weak. I know it sounds kind of lame and the best moments couldn't exist without the supersad ones, but I still think everything should be happy. Except that I don't. I just feel better when it is. I'm going to stop with the rambling now.

Buffy's thinking Of Human Bondage was porn was absolutely hysterical. Esp. when she said she was trying to cut way down on it. I also thought Sunday telling that one vampire, "The fact that your fat makes you look fat. The sweater just makes you look... purple." She was a total bitch, but rather amusing.

I thought Xander finding Buffy in the Bronze was very sweet. I'm with him; Buffy is my hero.

Overall, though, not the best ep. Too much lonely Buffy.

yeah you're right too much lonely.She misses Angel so much i can feel it there.And the quote about porn was hilarious!!!
I don't dislike this episode. Watched it yesterday and it's really different. I mean... you go from epic battle against the Mayor and all these characters leaving the show to a whole new place with new faces.

Best moments for me are the speech of Xander to Buffy and when Sunday break the umbrella and piss off Buffy enough for her to finally get her confidence back!

Yeah for starting a new season! OK, Season 4 has previously been my least favorite, but I'm trying to keep an open mind here. Still, this episode is kinda "meh" for me. I liked "Anne" better as a season opener. I was wishing that Eddie would stick around, he seemed so nice, and it was so nice for her to have a friend. But that Sunday...thank gawd they didn't keep her, I don't think I could've handled it. I thought the interaction with Xander at the Bronze was good: he had some funny lines, and sweet ones too, "You're my hero", awwww. Wow, I didn't know that that was really DB, but the side shot looked nothing like the guy they eventually showed, so I do believe it.

So, question for you guys who have been to college: did you have a Willow experience at first, or was it a Buffy experience? Mine was like Willow's; it was a whole, new exciting world for me....that unfortunately now seems a century ago LOL.
