OK, 1st of all, this is our only Rangel episode...and I loved it. Not as much as I like Spangel of course. 😉 And the fight scene could've been better.

Drunk Giles was hilarious! & Spike was so deliciously evil...he's so cunning, even with a bloody chip in his head.

Buffy needed to know that Angel still loved her. I really loved Riley in this episode. I think Marc Blucas was at his best late S4. Xander tells him the sordid details of how Angel lost his soul (which Buffy left out) while Buffy is in Los Angeles. Of course he would say "she went running off to LA to bone up on her history". He has to wear Xander's dorky clothes until he gets his soldier gear back. And then when she returns she doesn't come to see him. Instead she lays down on her bed melancholy over her fight with Angel. He hears what sounds like his men getting attacked and it turns out to be by Angel. He knows that Angel drove two hours out of his way to see Buffy, who at this time, is Riley's girlfriend. And then she leaves the room to speak with Angel alone in what he probably thought was a lover's spat. Buffy had to tell Riley that Forrest was killed by Adam. It was so heartbreaking when he said "If you're gonna break my heart, do it fast".

I agree with all of the above. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I think that Angel's saying he doesn't like Riley was actually a half-hearted approval of him. Riley was willing to back Buffy up, fight with her & for her, unlike other creeps (Parker). It had to make Angel feel at least a little bit better.

That was a good one!

The latter season 4 eps are so much better than the earlier eps. We've had several really good episodes in a row (Who Are You, New Moon Rising, and this one). Even though later season 4 does feature Adam, who I think is a lame Big Bad.

I almost forgot about my favorite quote of the episode. It's Spike to Adam: "I get why the demons all fall in line with you. You're like Tony Robbins, if he was a big, scary, Frankenstein-looking — you're exactly like Tony Robbins."

Actually, he can't point the fake gun at Xander without being hurt. He moves the gun all around and when it comes to Xander, yelps in pain.

I didn't care too much for this episode, except for Angel coming back (love Bangel) and the Beatles reference. I'm a HUGE Beatles fan. Even have a tattoo.

I love how Willow refers to Tara as her girlfriend. Made me smile.

My favourite quote:
Willow: I am a whiz.
Tara: She is a whiz.
Willow: If ever a whiz there was.

Which is kinda foreshadowing to me since the guy in Wiz played Sweet, but I'm sure it was unintentional.
 
If I might be excused for interrupting the Angel love-a-thon for a moment...

The main plot of "The Yoko Factor" involved Spike cleverly devising a scheme to destroy the trust shared by Buffy and her friends. While the plot in and of itself is quite impressive, and while I think that Spike was perfectly capable of hatching something like that, I just don't see it as being his style. Angelus was the one who was always into the subtle plots and psychological warfare. Spike was more about impetuous action, in his own words later, "all about the kill." I could see him breaking into the Gem of Amara treasure vault, getting enough gold and gems to buy up every available kitten in Sunnydale and the surrounding area, then using them to hire an army of demons and vamps to attack the gang en masse, overwhelming them by sheer force of numbers, but that's about as subtle as Spike's idea of a plot would have gone. That, to me, would have been far more Spike's style.

Okay, now everyone can go back to loving Angel...

I always kind of thought there should have been a come back from Riley at that point. Something like what you mentioned, or something like 'Yeah, and I didn't turn evil!'

I like this episode. Drunk Giles is awesome and I like that everything that has been building up for the season comes to a head here. This episode makes me love Riley so much, and I feel so sorry for him. Also, Angel is a bit of a dick.

I actually think Spike is just the vamp. He's not only just about the kill, he's also a pragmatic vampire who above all else values self interest. He's also very adaptable. It's possible he simply took on Angelus' wisdom about how to deal with Buffy: The key is not force but going for her friends.

As for Riley vs Angel, I can see how both of them feel. Angel doesn't really do anything to allay Riley's suspicions about his being evil. Angel's also pissed about being jumped and seeing Riley there, the guy who gets to have everything he doesn't. Both of their insecurities get the better of them.

Spike's plan does seem out of character, but he's also pretty terrified by Adam. That and he thinks Adam will really be able to stop Buffy.

I don't really feel bad for Riley. Buffy ends the episode with him.

I take that personally. Besides, seeing as the whole point of him being there was to apologize for being harsh with Buffy (though it was entirely justified when she threw it in his face that she got to move on and he didn't) I don't see how he was being a dick at all.

This episode is my favorite of the season (pretty much along with "Pangs") because both feature fairly ridiculous scenes that take place in Giles' home. Pangs had that Chumash battle with Spike ridden with arrows which seemed to annoy him more than anything else, and this episode had that silly as all-hell argument with Giles having the best line of the bunch: 'you never train with me anymore. He's going to kick your ass'. Xander gave him three great setups without realizing it, with the Batman/Alfred line, the 'Fort Dix' line, and of course Tara...bloody hell.

Angel's fight with Riley was great, and logical but when you look at the end where he says "I don't like him", Buffy thanks him for saying so, and Angel basically nods, smirks and walks away....that to me looks like an approval. He sized him up, saw what he was made of, and in the end he didn't have to like him but he did accept him. Anyway that's how I've always seen that, um, scene. Didn't mean to make that rhyme.

Everytime I watch this episode, when we see Angel and Riley in the same "room", I think: "bring Spike in, it'd be a party!" Makes me wonder what it would be like if the 3 Buffy's boys, who all have feelings towards her (talking about season 8-?) would actually be in the same room together. I'm guessing an apocalypse....

Personally, I'm just hoping that at some point, Spike can say to Riley, "Do you remember back in Sunnydale when you threatened to stake me, and I said, 'I'd like to see you try?' Well, now's your chance, for that and for planting those damn demon eggs in my basement. Come on, soldier boy, try." at which point Riley would discover that Hostile 17 is no longer chipped.

I personally have to laugh evertime I'm watching this one, when Riley made the super-duper jealous bf and then B&A left the room for talking!!!
I never liked B&R together...
