Buffy-fans vs Twilight-fans: Why the hate?

I'm with Bear. Liking Buffy plays no part on why I hate Twilight, I just don't like the books, or the movie.

Buffy's a good of example of how to properly work a Vampire show and book's. Twilight isn't.
 
I don't know if I would say Twilight is a poor example of how to work vampire mythology into modern art. Buffy is certainly more high brow and artsy. That's why they teach college courses on it. Twilight, however, isn't supposed to be high brow and artsy; it's aimed at a specific demographic and designed to make money. That's why it, well, rakes in the dough. Both series met their goals, so I would say both were successful in properly incorporating the vampire mythos into a modern setting and modern art.

That said, I certainly think it's okay for Buffy fans to bash and/or even hate Twilight if they so choose. It's okay for Twilight fans to do the same. Whenever you put your art out into the public, you're going to get some critics. Some will even be quite vociferous in expressing their dislike. I don't think the fact that both series involve vampires should hold Buffy fans to a higher, more polite standard of behavior. I think people who call for Buffy fans to express some sort of solidarity with Twilight fans, even if it is in tempering the sting of their negative remarks, are perhaps taking the whole vampire connection a tad too seriously.

I don't mind Twilight, it's not my favourite thing, but I've read all the books. Buffy is so much better though.
 
I really quite like Twilight, i think Stephanie Meyer is really quite talented. I'm not saying it's better then buffy because it's not. But i think it's really interesting to see another portrayal of vampire mythology. And I didn't really rate the film in comparrison to the books....but Buffy is in a league of it's own, nothing can compare really!
 
Personally, I got no hate for Twilight. Probably because I have NO INTEREST in Twilight. I wouldn't buy the book... nor pay to see the movie. But if someone LENT me the book(s), yeah, I might read'm. Even tho I'm hot & heavy on Angel books at this time... And if someone else had the movie on DVD & asked me to watch it with them, I'd probably do it. But I'm not going to any extra effort, simply because I believe that "Buffy" is far superior to any other vampire lore.
 
I have no real opinion on either the "Twilight" movie or books, but I've seen the same thing with "Angel" and "Moonlight," "Forever Knight," or even the "Blade" comics and movies. I've enjoyed all of those titles to one extent or another, but I try NOT to compare them either to each other or characters in the Buffyverse. Doing so just isn't fair to the creators and actors in each individual series. I try my best to judge each one on its own merits. I may love, like, tolerate, or hate a particular vampire/demon fighter/whatever, but if I do, it has nothing to do with my being a Buffy fan. It just wouldn't be fair to any of them.
 
I know Buffy is a lot better, but I just have one question. Which is; how can you say Buffy portrays vampires better? Sure, the vamps in Buffy are COOLER, but I mean, until you come face to face with a real vampire (Yeah, 'cause they exist nowwadays. 😉) You're never going to know what portrays them the best. That's one thing I don't get about all this Twilight-hate.

Edit: Also, another thing is, Buffy was made more for adults, Twilight for teens, so maybe that's why you all just are getting into it.

I'm with Blondie Bear on this. I have already explained my stance on why I dislike Twilight in the other thread that was closed.

Yet, if you're wildly interested, the main thing I can't stand about Twilight is how some people feel the need to compare it to Buffy just because they both have vampires and a vampire/human love story - while the two series are NOT anywhere near comparable in quality. Buffy is obviously so much better. It's pretty much impossible to find an article about Twilight that doesn't mention Buffy. The only good that could come out of this is this "connection" might inspire more people to watch Buffy. Then they can see what a real vampire story is.

SM has every right to write her mediocre books and make a whole ton of cash. All the power to her. I just wish I didn't have to see like, 4 people a day reading one of them. Bleh.

I think I can say that Buffy portrays vampires in a better way because, in my opinion, vampires are supposed to be scary. They're supposed to eat people -- specifically, they're supposed to eat people by drinking their blood. That is what distinguishes vampires from other ghouls in almost all vampire lore. That being the case, I think Twilight's main vampires suffer in comparison to virtually all other lore because they are not portrayed as such. Instead, they merely make veiled references to a vague prior time period in which they did not adhere to their "vegetarian" rules. By neglecting to show us her main vampires in their truly monstrous form so that we can fully appreciate their decision to refrain from eating humans, I feel that she robs them of their potency and I wonder why she chose to use vampires in her mythology at all.

To some extent, then, I think fans of various vampire lore are entitled to judge Twilight based on its version of vampires. Vampires don't exist in a vacuum. If Stephanie Meyer's take on the genre is lacking in some way, then I think fans of other vampire lore are justified in making the comparison. It is, in many ways, like comparing romantic comedy to Jane Austen, macabre horror to Edgar Allen Poe, a Western to Larry McMurtry or Sci-Fi to Jules Verne. Every genre has its own conventions and gold standards.
 
I read all four books and I did quite enjoy them at first, actually. But they're not my favorite books and I wouldn't read them again. The whole Bella - Edward crap is annoying and just doesn't make sense. To me, anyway. But I liked the parts with Jake and all. So I wouldn't say it's a complete waste of money.

As for the vampire stuff: Yeah, you can show a new side of vampires. That's interesting. But no matter what, vampires are no angels! The complete opposite, really. And in Twilight they are shown like that. They're sweet, cool, loving, selfless, perfect nd glitter in sunlight! I mean come on...

To say the truth, I never really liked the vampires in Buffy, either. Just brutal, dumb killingmachines. The most of them, anyway. But then, there were also vampires like Angelus, Spike, Darla and Drusilla. THAT are real vampires for me.

In my opinion, vampires shouldn't be dumb and just kill, kill, kill. But they're not Gods gift, either. They're beautiful in their own way. Souless creatures of the night who can show love but lack of a conscience.

And you shouldn't forget that they are killers, no matter what. And Stephenie Meyer did exactly that. It's like she created this whole new race and stamped the name "vampires" on them, which they're not. Buffy didn't invent vampires. There have been stories of vampires since forever! And Joss took those Myths and created a story. Added a little there and here but never changed the whole image of vampires. He showed us that in some cases they can be good but you should always be careful.

Now, the actual topic: Everybody can have their own opinion. And if some think Twilight is their bible and Edward their God, then that's okay. I, however, am not one of them and never will be and though I don't really respect their opinion, I accept it. A lot of my friends are Twilight fans and I can deal with that as long as they don't talk about it 24/7.
 
The hate is there because humans were born with natural preference. There isn't a true underlying dynamic between the two, the only real similarity is the vampire use. It's just the same ole' "my better is better than your better!" And I haven't really seen much Buffy/Twilight fan spazzing, it has mainly been Twilight vs Harry Potter.. is Twilight the next big teen seizure-causing phenomenon.

And who presents Vampires in a better way? What is your opinion on that? My opinion? Buffy.

I don't hate Twilight because I like Buffy. I hate Twilight because I think the books are complete shit with too many problems to list here. Also? The fandom is batshit. I know it's not cool to judge the art by who likes it, but the sheer insanity of the people who like Twatlight turn me off tenfold.

Judgmental Mes is judgmental, trufax. But I can't help how I feel, and I know for sure it's just my opinion because a ton of people feel differently.

Me=love Buffy
Me=hate Twilight

Twilight is pretty much a ripoff of four differnent TV show and movies put together and the result is not good

I don't dislike Twilight, read the books, maybe one day I'll see the movies... but what I do dislike is how completely mental the fandom got. Or how cocky Stephanie Meyer got because of said fandom...there are a lot of vampire love stories out there, so you happened to write one that is incredibly marketable...it doesn't make you the be all and end all of that genre. That's pretty much my issue with it and that really has nothing to do with my fandom of Buffy.
