This is for older fans. Specifically older fans with kids or nieces or nephews whom them want to indoctrinate in the mythology.
If I want to get my nephew into Buffy, I'll wait until he's older and let him watch the real thing (though only Seasons 1-3). He already knows the names of some of the characters via the Sims 3.
This comic looks crap. Ignoring the art and how irritating the "Buffy" character is, my first main issue with it is that it shows Buffy not wanting to wear a bike helmet. Children should be taught how to keep themselves safe, which includes wearing a helmet whilst bike riding, not have the main character act like it's the worse thing in the world just because she doesn't want "helmet hair". What's next, Buffy doesn't want to look both ways crossing the street because it gives the wind a longer time to blow her hair about? My other issue with it is how it's basically ticking boxes in order to be PC.
Giles is now a woman because how dare he remain male. Willow is now black because you can't have too many white characters. Xander is now a werewolf wearing flip flops with a camera that makes him look like a junior "reporter" because you've got to have that "wacky" sidekick. Though they may have different names, these are this comic's version of Giles, Willow and Xander. (And before anyone jumps on me, there is nothing wrong with having a black character in a story. However, when a beloved character's skin colour is only changed just so that a box can be ticked, then it becomes annoying. I'd be saying the same thing if they turned James Bond into a woman because that would be box ticking as well. Therefore when I say it's annoying that they turned Willow black, it's not about her being black, but about the fact that it's box ticking. It wouldn't surprise me if the Xander character ends up in a wheelchair because then they can tick another box there as well or maybe he too will decide that he'd prefer to be female so they can add another tick to the gender box and get rid of any male character all together. Gender, Race, Disability, 3 boxes ticked with the Scooby gang alone, add in religion and yet anther box is ticked.
Buffy may have it's light-hearted moments, but it is not a light-hearted show. The main character is stuck with a destiny which means that she could die any day and there is nothing she can do about it. The show villains were good because they posed an actual threat. Buffy is not a kids show and should not be turned into such. "Heckmouth" really shows how much of a load of bollocks this comic really is. They can't even be honest about the whole premise that Buffy's town is built on top of a HELLmouth.
If you're going to get younger relatives into Buffy, do it properly with the real thing, don't pass them off with this crap.
Especially if the vampires turn out to be the cool kids and jocks & especially if they are the adults
Mona the Vampire did a decent job with that kind of premise where the "monsters" weren't actually monsters but ordinary people and it was Mona's imagination.
Making the Watcher female seems right - seeing a middle aged man getting close to a 12 year old girl just looks suspect nowadays, sadly.
Yep because only men pose a danger to children apparently. A stereotype that contributes to why childcare is a predominantly female profession.
