Buffy & Giles in Season 7

I don't care for what happened to the character of Giles s. 6-7, sure ASH wanted to leave the show but did they have to make Giles thoroughly unlikeable?
Hm I don't know...

The break in the Buffy/Giles bond can't be blamed on either one of them singularly but either way, for me it all comes down to Giles growing into a person I didn't care for and wish would've just stayed away. Sad cause once he was one of my favorites.

Which is why I don't care much about what he does or what happens to him in s8. He grew irrelevant to me I guess.

I don't agree he was unlikeable. Especially in season 6 - he was, IMO, basically the hero of Grave. He risked his life to transfer his magicks to Willow so that Xander could eventually reach her. Grave was pretty much all about heroic Giles. And even in season 7 he wasn't unlikeable -- just irrelevant. Anyway I think I'm just going to try to forget season 7 entirely.

I really found him unlikeable. Arrogant and overbearing, for me the Giles that came back at the end of s6 is not a Giles enjoyed.

But to each his own 🙂

Strange for us to have something we disagree on. 🙂

As you know, Giles remains one of the only characters I actually still like by the end (the only other one being Faith) so I don't find him unlikeable, arrogant or overbearing. Can you elaborate on some examples so I can see what you mean? Because in season 6 and 7, next to Willow and Buffy's arrogance and Spike's arrogance and overbearing-ness (yeah I can make up words 😛) I don't personally see it with Giles so much.

I wish I had some tangible examples to throw your way here but honestly it was too long ago since I watched those episodes in particular (not my favorite seasons all and all) and the best I can give you is a 'feeling'. I think it's more in ASH's acting than in the script though cause to me he comes across as so cold...

When I've done a re-watch I'll see if I can't do you better and give some examples of behavior
 
I don't think he was arrogant and overbearing in the s6 finale at all. He was firm with Willow -- but when he cracked up in uncontrollable laughter at Buffy sleeping with Spike, and in the follow-on scene, that was one of Giles's best moments in the series. Sure had me laughing out loud. And it's always so lovely to see Anthony laughing. 🙂
 
I think it's because they both have changed, a lot. Both of them became more serious, they started taking the slaying thing very seriously. It was less a matter of not family-like again, it was about more important things. We see it in the ending of season 5, Buffy says she will kill anyone who comes near Dawn, if anyone tries to kill her 'for the greater good' she wouldn't let them.
Then in season 7, there was that huge mission, bigger than ever before. And again, Buffy protects another person. Last time it was Dawn, now it's Spike. She doesn't listen to Giles anymore, she says she doesn't need him. And Giles knows she feels this way. They're both all about work and no play, so instead of being a daughter and a father figure, they became co-workers.

Yea, even though he was gone most of season 6 that episode where he comes back and wants to fight Willow always sends a shiver down my spine and is one of my favorite moments in the entire Buffy series, I still loved Giles in season 6. Season 7 was ridiculous, they basically made him a background character...some of the Potentials had a bigger role than Giles. I maintain that season of Buffy wasn't that great, Angel's last season was much, much better

I have to admit that they made me hate Giles in season 7. He was not the Giles I used to love.
