Angel had just been shot with the arrow. Buffy, Giles, Wesley
and Xander were in the library.
Buffy! Giles is Vanishing. part 1 of 2 parts
Giles and Buffy were talking to Wesley, blaming him as the
council would not help Angel. Buffy was becoming very upset
with the council.
"Buffy! look at Giles, he is vanishing," said Wesley. Buffy looked
to Giles, she saw his body was transparent, "Is this something
to do with what happened to Angel?" she asked.
Wesley looked troubled, "What happened to Angel is probably a
distraction. This could be something else entirely," suggested
Wesley, "A poisoned arrow to get Angel, this is completely
different."
Willow walked into the room just in time to see Giles vanish.
"What just happened?" Willow stood, almost fixed to the ground,
"Where could he be? where has he gone? has this sort of thing
occurred before?" asked Buffy. Wesley looked at Willow, "What
do you think?"
"The answer will be easy, knowing where to look to find the
answer, that is the hard part."
"You know what books are here better than I do," said Wesley,
"I cannot think what book to look at first, the best place to ring
would be the council. I am not to sure if Buffy or I should ring
them, not just yet anyway."
The three of them had been looking through book after book for
several hours. "What about a locator spell Will?" asked Buffy.
"Already tried one, it was no help. It stated that Giles was here,
in the library. It went to the very place that he vanished at."
Buffy looked at Willow. "What could that mean?"
"Anything really, basically he is here just not in mind, body,
spirit or soul," she replied.
"It could be a test, like when you were tested Buffy," said Wesley.
"What good will that do us?" asked Buffy
"We will have something to look for," stated Willow, "I'll go and
have a look in the Pergamum Codex."
Three more pizza's and a bottle of coke later Wesley was starting
to look like Xander, judging from the amount of gas in the coke
he was starting to sound like him, except for his need to
apologise on a regular basis.
Willow wandered into the room, "Any of you guys fancy
attempting to break a code?"
"It will break the monotamy of looking for something in these
books," said Wesley.
"Is the code in letters or numbers?" asked Buffy.
"I don't know, that sounds like school work."
"Xander, you are in a school," said Wesley. Xander took a quick
look about, "I hate it when you think you are in a nightmare,
then some one tells you you're not even asleep. Count me in
Will, what is it about?" Willow looked at him, "You are joking right?"
"No! I am fairly sure I am being serious," said Xander, "Why?"
"Why would I ask you to try and break the code if I already
knew what came after the code?" asked Willow.
"Gotcha! hmm, this is all Wesley's fault, if he hadn't have talked
to me, I would still think I was in a nightmare, and I would not
have answered you."
"What is the code?" asked Buffy.
"There is a number followed by a colon followed by another
number on most of the pages," said Willow. "Lets have a look,"
Xander leant over Willow's shoulder, "So, 17:42? is that the
first one?" asked Xander.
"Nope, just one of many," said Willow. "I liked what you were
on about the other week Will. about that razor."
"The razor? oh right Occam's." "That's the one Will. Fits me a
treat, where the simple answer is usually the right one, and if
it's not, I don't have to take the blame," said Xander.
"It is the only theory we have, I reckon we should do it," said
Buffy. "Oh come on? really?" asked Wesley. "I agree with
Wesley," said Xander, "Can you imagine how bad the watchers
head boy would feel if I was right, to have the school idiot be
cleverer than him?" Xander smiled to him, "What's this? no
smarter than thou come backs?"
Three and a half hours later, they were trying to sort what the
words were. Willow walked to the library table, she put the
Codex down then an open exercise book.
"What you got Will?" asked Xander. "There is an answer here,
more questions though. It could be, "˜Test of VS to W, W is here.
He does not watch the fountain of 4 in Navona. If answer is
right in 4D's. The CO is the CO, Next test revealed.'"
"Oh no! not another test?" asked Buffy. "You could be right,
test of Vampire Slayer to Watcher, Watcher is here? What do
you think?" asked Wesley.
"Oh come on, you're not taking his answer seriously are you?"
asked Xander.
"Seriously? no. But simply? like Occam's Razor simply, then yes,"
said Buffy.
"Is this one of the Watchers Councils tests?" Willow looked
straight at Wesley, "I would not have thought so," he replied,
"The last test was to test the slayers ability on how to figure
things out, why another test and why test Giles, I am the
Watcher here."
"He does have a point you know," admitted Xander. Buffy
glanced at Xander, "If Xander is right, and it isn't the Watchers
Council, who is it?"
Wesley went to where Giles was last seen, "We cannot do that."
"Aren't you getting sidetracked? This has nothing to do with
Giles the question is about Navona," said Xander.
Saturday faded to become history, Sunday morning changed
from the future to the present. Cordelia opened the doors of
the library.
"Here you are, what are you doing on a Sunday morning with
these losers?" Wesley smiled, "The same as I was doing Friday
evening, trying to find Giles. He is in Navona, where ever that is."
Cordelia looked to Willow, then she had a look at the books on
the table. She looked to them, "Losers." Cordelia headed for the
doors, opening one she faced them, "I realise it is hard for you,
but you could try commonsense. I am surprised at you Wesley.
Try an encyclopaedia, the Piazza Navona in Rome." she left.
Xander went into the stacks and brought an encyclopaedia to
them. "Here it is, the Piazza Navona. What was it? He does not
watch the fountain of 4? what could that mean?"
"The fountain, it is of four rivers, what else has four rivers?"
"The only one I can think of Wesley, is where Charon took the
newly dead."
"And that is where the Gods sought answers," said Wesley.
"I can't even think how that would help us," said Willow.
"Depends who has set the test, could it refer to us asking the
right question?" asked Buffy. Willow glanced at Wesley, "That
gives us something to work towards."
"Guys! there's a picture here," said Xander. He took the book
to show them, "Isn't this thing like a Cleopatra's needle? and
what is that at it's top?" asked Xander. "It is The Angel of
Peace," added Willow. "Angel? not my Angel," said Buffy, "I
couldn't see him looking to the fountain, oh!"Buffy! look!" ordered Willow.
The figure of Giles slowly appeared. He looked at each of them
as they continued to stare at him.
Sat in his office Giles listened while they told him how he had
been returned, looking at the code then looking to Buffy, "You
know what CO is don't you?" Buffy shook her head. "Who ever
did this it or they see you not as any of them but as The
Chosen One."
"What is the next test, when do we find out what it is?" asked
Willow.
