Do you think Buffy should have a main Big Bad that plays a role throughout the series like Wolfram and Hart did in Angel, Rossum in Dollhouse, and the Alliance/Blue Sun Corporation in Firefly/Serenity?

I'm not saying it has to be an organization. It could be a person working from behind the scenes. But it has to be somone different from your usual season Big Bad. Someone could be the Arvin Sloane to Buffy's Sydney.

Technically I'd say the Watchers Council lived up to the "pain in the ass that won't go away" title like Wolfram & Hart were in Angel. They may not have been as vicious and evil but they were annoying and knew how to threaten Buffy and the Scoobies from time to time.

I liked it the way it was. I hated the Wolfram and Hart stuff with Angel. it was like "go away already." I got bored and tired of them getting in the way all the time. It was all too predictable. so I like that there were season big bads not a series big bad.

Yeah, Big Bad's don't really do it for me anyway, so I wouldn't have enjoyed a big bad spaning all seasons. I prefered the seasons that focused less on a "big bad" as much as internal struggle with the characters like season 2 and 6.

Buffy does have a main Big Bad. Herself. She's her worst enemy. But she doesn't realize this yet.

Good insight.

indeed, so true
Two things:
One, it would have to be a very good one. We don't feel the need of one, because there was never one, and we're used to that situation.
And two, it would have to be something Buffy couldn't beat that easy. Because she's a slayer, and she kills every seasonal big bad (well, almost). She would also have to have a reason not to destroy it for 7 years. There would have to be an excuse. Even something she cannot kill. Like the First Evil. Of course The First Evil turned out to be lame, but it is unbeatable. Something like that might work. Not a demon or something like that which clearly she wouldn't have much problem killing within 7 years. Know what I'm saying?

I don't know about one lasting throughout the whole series, but I think the Mayor would have made a good big bad for longer than he in fact got to be one just during season 3. Other than that I think it was good having Glory for one season and having the life is the big bad theme of Season 6.

It would have changed the dynamic of the show to have a perennial bad guy, but there may have been an opportunity in season 7 to bring back a previous big bad such as the Mayor then there could have been more complications between Faith and Buffy which might have been interesting.

O
OhWow
Ooh Yeah the Mayor coming back would have made a good season
I liked that it was diverse in terms of big bads, it kept it interesting and tied in well with the whole idea that a slayer has to be prepared for whatever evil happens to pop up. I think it's also a good metaphor for life as well (and we all know how much Joss likes his metaphors 😛), i.e. that life is full of challenges.

Well you can argue that the Big Bad for the entire show was Buffy's own Slayer legacy because she always wanted to have the option to live a normal life, and it always stopped her.

That'd be a cool idea. Like, back in LA there was a force of some sort that Buffy was to go into battle with before leaving LA. I dunno what, make it up. But there's always a presence throughout the years of this entity watching her grow, waiting for the moment when she'd be an actual strong nemisis for it and finally strike at the end. Then we'd find out that some demons were sent after her by this force to test her, or things where puppeteered by this evil in her life that were thought to just happen (Jasmine-esque, though not as determintal to the plot as controlling EVERYTHING). I'd be interested in something like that.

Yeah, what do you guys think about a main Big Bad in Buffy who's been pulling the strings from behind the scenes through most of the series, using the season Big Bads as chess pieces aganist Buffy to test her strengths and weaknesses, waiting for the perfect moment to make its move aganist her? There'll be hints of its presence and what it may be from time to time. We may meet people who work for the Big Bad along the way. But it wouldn't be until S7 or the end of S6 that the series Big Bad finally comes out from the shadows and begins its open conflict aganist Buffy.

Having a Big Bad like this would untify the seasons of Buffy into one big story.

I don't like that idea. It would be turning all the other Big Bads into jokes. It would cause the fans to lose a lot of respect for some Big Bads like The Mayor or Glory if we found out they were just pawns in someone else's plan.

I don't know if it would have worked with the vibe of Buffy. To me W&H made sense in Angel I can't picture one big bad being in seven seasons of Buffy. Especially with the tone of the show it is a lot more light than any of the others to me.

I never thought the First Evil was lame. It represented what I believe was Buffy's worst enemy. Namely herself. Or the negativity within her that threatens to come out of the woodwork every now and then. It's a battle that Buffy and the rest of the characters have to fight for the rest of their existence. They'll never win. But I don't think they'll lose the war, either.

Spike wasn't exactly a Big Bad, but he was a major adversary through most of the series (until Season Seven). And he was more of a villain in Seasons Four and Six (and, of course, definitely Season Two), which is an interesting counterbalance to his more heroic status in Seasons Five and Seven.
