I just watched this episode again and I was appalled at buffy, i mean what she did was so wrong, i mean she was the leader of the group and because faith questions her decisions she has to go all barbaric/swinish and punch her in the face. What was she playing at!!!!!! her behaviour was terrible, i so wanted faith to just beat her to within an inch of her life but was also so impressed when she didnt even try, it shows how much faith has grown and matured and shows the complete opposite in buffy, well at least in some ways- it shows how much buffy has changed but was it really for the better or was the change in buffy a negative thing?

OK, I completely disagree. I think Buffy was completely justified in being that angry with Faith. And how does Buffy deal with her anger? She lashes out physically. Usually she does it by pummeling vamps on patrol, but that's because usually, whoever she's mad at is human and if she hit them, it would just about kill them. Very few times does Buffy have a fight (like a verbal fight) with her friends (I can only think of the Yoko Factor and Selfless right now). But with Faith, it's safe to punch her, because she's a slayer and she can take it.

See, I don't think it was right for Buffy to actually hit Faith, but I can understand the urge to do it. After all, those girls are in Buffy's care, not Faith's. And Faith is the one who took them out in a VERY dangerous town at night, got alcohol for them (she had to. How else would any of those girls get alcohol? The bartender at the Bronze HAS to be responsible, with all those high schoolers who hang out there) and got them into a fight. And then she wouldn't take responsibility for it. I understand how Buffy got that angry. Now I do agree that Buffy shouldn't have hit Faith and faith showed admirable restraint in not fighting back. But Faith DID do major wrong in this situation.

I don't think it was realy wrong, i mean they weren't safe anywhere in sunnydale, so they may aswell be unsafe somewhere fun and they needed a moral booster. Its similar to what buffy herself did when she kills the uber vamp in front off all the girls, that was incredibly dangerous but was done to increase moral. Also i dont think buffy hit faith for taking the girls out i think she did it because of what faith said i.e. "ok, what about the vineyard..." And just because faith can take it doesn't mean buffy has the right to hit her, i mean a woman can take a beating but that doesn't mean her husband has the right to beat her. And the very fact that buffy resolves conflicts and expresses anger with physical attacks is in itself a barbaric act, i know she may have had good reasons for hitting faith but hse should have controlled herself i mean faith is the wreckless one and she managed to control herself and buffy can control herself but chose not to.

I understand if Buffy was angry and worried. Many of the potentials were young and they were of course in danger all the time. But, I don't think Buffy's anger had a lot to do with her really caring about the potentials. I believe it had much more to do with Buffy being angry with Faith for deciding anything at all. Buffy never wanted Faith to have anything to do with the things that "belonged" to her. And in some way the potentials "belonged" to Buffy.
Now, again, I do understand Buffy's anger. She had a lot on her mind and a lot to take care of. But in my opinion, Faith was the mature one in this situation. She was looking after the girls, and she didn't get them into a fight, they did that all by themselves. And Faith was the mature one for not hitting Buffy back, but just accepted the fact that Buffy was the one who was and would always be "right" and always know the best. Faith was better off shutting up and and not hitting back (sadly enough). She was the mature one here, in my opinion, and Buffy was the one being childish and reacting the way she did because of her past with Faith...

(Now off I go, I am still not allowed to discuss Faith and now I'm shutting up, just like Faith.)

I don't think Buffy had the right to hit Faith. Yeah Faith is a slayer and yeah she can take it but she shouldn't have to. Just because she questioned Buffy's motives, doesn't give Buffy the right to hit her, even if she wasn't in a great mood. I think Buffy was really out of line when she hit her. But I do understand that she was under pressure and a lot of stress. I give a total thumbs up to Faith for being the bigger person and not striking back.

I think Buffy had more than a right to hit Faith. After all she's done to Buffy, she deserves a swift kick in the ass much worse than Buffy gave her in that episode. She should be grateful that Buffy is letting her stay at her house during everything that's going on. For Faith to go and put Buffy's sister and the potentials, who basically turned out to be one of the key parts to defeating the first, in danger was completely reckless. There are times for fun, and there are times of war. They were in a state of war and needed to be on their game.

I think both sides of this arguement make good points, so I gave them both Karma. 😀

You're taking this diplomacy thing way too far :D (j/k)
I understand the whole time for war thing, but if you were to put yourself in a potentials position, you're tired of all the training and all that stuff, you're gonna wanna go have some fun, especially if you think you're gonna die. You're not gonna wanna spend your last days working, you're gonna wanna spend it having fun. And yeah I get that them getting drunk wasn't the best thing, but either they're ready to fight the First or they're not. And I think they handle themselves just fine.

Well i think no person has the right to physically attack another person, just because someone has done something to you in the past still doesn't give you the right to hit them, i mean if a girl cheated on her lover with loads of people and completely broke their heart does that mean that person can go and smack their girlfriend. The only situation where i think physical violence is justified is in self defence and thats it, to me there are no exceptions to the rule

Also that night it wasn't time for war, they weren't even training or nothing they were just sat around doing nothing, it was an appropiate time for fun and going to bronze was dangerous but in sunnydale when can you go to bronze and it be safe?

You're forgetting one point...this isn't the real world. The things that Faith did to Buffy, many of them aren't even possible in this world, so different rules are going to apply. There's going to be a lot of pent up anger in their situation and it's going to come out at different times because a lot of the things Faith did are unforgivable to Buffy.

The potentials were not at the level where they could beat the ubervamps which were the members of the army they had to beat. If I still could not beat my enemy, with time looming before the final battle, I would not be out drinking, especially with the end of the world at stake.

The things she did are different, but there are things in the real world that can be similar to faith and if Buffy doesn't want to forgive faith then fair enough but it still odes not give her the right to hit her and it was a daft thing to do. I mean just think what could have happened if Faith had fought back, it was stupid, it could have lead to one of them dying and when at that moment there was only four people with super powers on the team so losing one of them, even faith reduces overall power by 25% and even if one hadnt die they could have done some serious damage to one another i.e. one of them could go into a coma, break a leg and when they hwere so close to the biggest war of our time it's not the time for attacking people on your side. I mean what Faith did was dangerous but i still dont think buffy should have hit her!!!

I think Buffy had every right to hit her, i know violence is bad, but for a long time it was all that Faith understood, i think it was hard for Buffy to understand that Faith had changed so much to what she was before. Also i think a bit of de ja vu was happening, remember when Faith first came, and Buffy felt threatened because she was "stealing" everything Buffy had, and was better liked because she wasnt as serious, but for Buffy being serious wasnt a choice, if she hadnt of been serious, she would of been dead by now, i think she is jealous that Faith had a life beyond slaying, and that she could let go so easliy, something Buffy could never do.

Fair enough someone had to be serious but buffy went too far with it, she was too serious, she was cutting herself of from people and i know some people here would argue she needed to in order to survive the war but part of what has distuinguished buffy from slayers of the past is the fact she doesn't cut people off and embraces her humanity

I agree she shouldnt of cut herself from the others, but she didnt know what else to do, she didnt think any one understood, but now there are loads of slayers she wont feel like that!

Well, my position on Faith is not a very good one. I never really liked tha character, mainly because she was reckless and had no care for others.

This is exampled heavily in the discussion at hand. Faith taking the potentials and Dawn out to the bar (and got them drunk) was an extreme example of her reckless behavior. She tends to suck everyone in with her bad decision making. Especially during the precarious time of fighting the First Evil, she shoudl not have done that. Buffy had every right in defending herself against Faith.

Yeah but the whole point in her being rekless was to show how different to Buffy she was, but when she came back and was all good, they were too alike so her taking them out was to once again show how different they were. She is a rekless character beacause she has nothing, and no one to live for, she is alone, like Buffy but also not like Buffy, Faith was almost like the devil, tempting Buffy to do what she liked because she can, and i think that played a big part in Buffy being alone, because Faith helped her to believe she was different than everyone else.

I wouldn't really call punching someone in the face because they said something you didnt like defending yourself. If I told someone MUFC are poo does that give a MUFC fan the right to hit me, no it doesn't and Buffy should no have hit faith, that was a more wreckless decision than taking the girls to the Bronze.

Also Faith didn't actually get the girls drunk, they did that themselves, as far as we know she wasn't really aware of it until she saw Amanda and then she took the drink of her. Fair enough tha means she wasn't watching the girls well enough, but afterall there where a lot of girls (not all of whom where drunk) and she was letting the, make mistakes, do their own thing. Just as Buffy herself did when she was their age

Sorry about the "one post then hasta" thing, but I went home yesterday. And now I'm back!

First off, Faith didn't just "say something Buffy didn't like". Remember that the Potentials were getting killed off all over the world. And Sunnydale was the center of evil at this point. People were leaving town at the beginning of this episode becaus the town was getting so scary. Faith took them (scared 15 year olds that she PROVED she can't take care of if they have alcohol without her knowledge.) out into a town that people were afraid to even be in anymore just to have a little fun? Putting them in danger like that could have been HELPFUL to the First's cause (of destroying the Slayer line), if anything had happened to those girls. Faith was aiding and abbetting the enemy. (Ok, that's taking it to the extreme, but you get what I mean)

Also, I never said that Buffy had the right to hit Faith. I said that I understand why she was angry enough to do so.

Last, then where did the girls get the alcohol I wonder. After all, the Bronze, it has been established, cards (Dopplegangland) and makes you wear a stamp if you're underage (Family). TV magic I guess, right? 😉

I'm guessing the people at the bard didnt really care they where underage with everyone leaving town or maybe one of them was actually 21 and bought everyone else drinks, but where did they get the money from.

I know you didnt say buffy had the right to hit her, i was just expressing my view. true faith did all that but that wasn't why buffy hit her, she was walking away, angry and when faith said what she said thats when buffy hit. The situation only helped make buffy angry but I dont think thats why buffy hit faith

Yeah I don't think thats why she hit her either. I think she hit her cause she knew she was right. And she felt Faith was coming in to 'take over'.

Well I don't think they were that scared cause why leave the house if you think you're gonna get attacked lol but thats just me.

I gotta agree with Xin Rong, had Faith decided to fight back they could have had one very serious probelm on their hands, especially of one of them got hurt really badly. Which very well could have been proven helpful to the First.
