Buffy in HD on Pivot

Interesting. It's not the first time this has been done though, I think that some European broadcasters did the upscale to 720p plus crop/stretch thing in the past and it was not that impressive. I remain skeptical, unless this is somehow the real deal™. Now that would be nice. I'm no videophile but I do run BtVS through madVR so it looks less like ass.

I really hope it looks better. If they could figure out a way to convert the episodes to HD without making them look like crap, I would LOVE that.

I wish I had Pivot channel. I watch Buffy on FX sometimes on the weekends early in the morning and the quality does look pretty bad. It's mostly the early seasons, so if they can make those look great in HD then I'd love to see it.

I do get Pivot! Could of swore last time I tried that channel it wasn't working, o well.
I was watching some eps from S7 earlier. Didn't really look any better than Netflix. So I'll wait to see if the early season look better.

I am writing to inform you that a Facebook page was created. It relates to the remastering of Buffy in High Definition. We are not at all happy about what was done. This is a pure massacre of our favorite series ! The colors are completely different, cropping is horrible (for exemple, in the first episode, when Xander is skateboarding, there's is a moment where he is beheaded !), and the natural grain of the film is totaly gone because of the massive DNR ! It looks like a plastic Barbie world !

Our goal is to show Fox that the series deserves more respect. Additionally, we send protest messages to Fox (the link is shown in the Facebook group).
We're here because we love "Buffy". We need all the support possible. Buffy deserves it. Joss Whedon and the rest of the team too.
We would be very happy if you help us. 😀

We can not leave things like that... :/
Please, if you are interested, send me a private message. I will send you the address of the Facebook group. We need to be heard...

Watching 'The Harvest' in HD and compared it the Netflix version. I really like it, it's a lot brighter but less grainy. Totally down for Buffy on Blu-Ray now.

I have been patiently waiting for Buffy on BD. I knew it would eventually happen. Hoping the studio shows it some love and doesn't cut corners. Let's all give that facebook page our support 🙂

Pivot is airing Buffy season 1 and 2 in HD, which initially made me very excited. However, after seeing some comparison shots and videos I'm very disappointed.
They made some weird cropping choices and the colors look off.

In the next video the Buffy and Angel scenes are WAY to bright. What were they thinking?! It completely ruins the atmosphere.

This comparison shot makes me really sad 🙁

Overall I like it, but some scenes look better than other. The brightness thing doesn't bother me, but the dark tone sets the mood for the show. I think that it works if you're trying to appeal to a younger audience who hasn't seen Buffy before. Younger kids are used to everything being in HD and the old grainy look makes the show feel old. I am curious as to why they went brighter, could they have not made it in HD without changing the coloring?

Do you also like the new CGI effects?
It's going to look weird, because Buffy wasn't shot in HD, which means it was not meant for HD. It's unfortunate, but if we want Buffy in HD, we're going to have to accept that certain things will be different, to allow for the conversion.

The CGI and digital remastering are one thing, but the main problem I have is the new framing.

They've done some pretty awful trimming down of the scenes to make them 'widescreen' which don't work at all.
Having recently watching the first season and seeing how many close-up shots they do, they're really gonna cut to threads a few of the episodes (specifically those ones that have a heavy horror theme with lots of close-ups of Buffy's face, such as 'The Puppet Show', 'Nightmares' and 'Prophecy Girl', are gonna be made unwatchable)

Honestly its amateur hour editing and really should've been done a hell of a lot better. 😡

I know right! Buffy deserves way better!
Yeah, I don't understand the need to change the format from 4:3.

Can understand wanting as high resolution as possible when making it digital.
But why don't do it and keep the original format?

You're bound to run into problem when expanding, or cropping, the image to a format it wasn't shot for.
People seems to be so scared for black borders on their widescreen TV's and I just don't understand why.

/SK

@MarlieTheSlayer Yea the CGI doesn't look great but it doesn't hurt it to much cuz it looks dated anyways. I guess I just don't notice cropping and formats, I don't really pay attention to that. To be honest I don't know what 4:3 is and how it differs from other formats. The brightness looked a lil bad when I was watching Surprise and there were some scenes where I could see too much detail and some of the actors weren't looking so young. So maybe the dark tone has it benefits.

Overall I'd say it's not a bad attempt at BtVS in HD but definitely needs more perfecting to bring it up to the quality that Buffy deserves.
