First and formost the Watcher's Council in pragmatic. By the end of 'Checkpoint' they're back working with the Slayer as she fights Glory/gaurds the hellmouth. There's no real need to worry about a rogue slayer in jail.
But if Buffy dies and no new Slayer is called then they have to deal with Faith, otherwise no more Slayers until Faith gets out of prison in possibly 25 yrs. (or busts out to help Angel in S4, but whatever.)

Yeah but that is a very different version of the Watchers Council to the one in the show. The Watchers Council never stuck me as caring that a slayer is out there projecting the world, they want that tool on their side.

If they were going to kill Faith just cuz Buffy died, they would have done it in season 4/5. They probably would have had Buffy killed too, if it meant they get control over the slayer again.

I think there's a big difference between there being a slayer out fighting the forces of darkness, even if she's not working for the council, and having an unstable slayer locked up in jail, unable to do anything. The Watcher's council may not care about the slayer, but they do need one. And with Buffy dead and no other slayer in sight, they'd have to do something.
Breaking Faith out probably would've been too much trouble. Arranging for her death (which is apparently the Coucil's strength) seems more likely to happen.

You're right about the fact that if the council were going to kill Faith, why not do it when she's in her coma? The only thing I can think of is that they wanted/needed some sort of procedure or trial to judge Faith as 'unfit' before they killed her, and its only when they couldn't get her out of the country that they decided go ahead and execute her anyway.

Of course after Buffy's resurrection, the point became moot and Buffy could once again guard the world against...nerds. *sigh* oh, Season 6.

Id like to think that buffy, would have killed Dawn if their was no other way....

Never the less.... I liked the moment of heroic sacrifice

DAwns birth may have been artificial... but as buffy said so clearly "this isnt just about the memorys they built, when I'm with her I feel closer to her then Ive eever been too anyone."

Buffys death was heroic... and I think she might have offered herself in angels place at the end of season 2 if it was only possible.

I loved hte music as Buffy did her heroic leap.
