Cover Artist: Massimo Carnevale

Oz’s temple in the Tibetan mountains is no longer a safe retreat for Buffy and her troops. Discovered by Twilight’s magical agent, Amy, and bereft of their own magic, the army is preparing for a human war with guns, grenades, missiles . . . and MANPADS -- it’s not a laughing matter. People are about to die.

But even without her own magic, Buffy is still a Slayer --the Slayer -- and she has to lead the way to victory. Or at least . . . live to fight another day.

I wonder if there will be any explanation as to just how they were able to procure an arsenal that size on a remote area of Tibet on such short notice, and alternatively, if all of that firepower came from the submarine, not only how, but WHY would it be there, knowing Buffy's aversion to firearms, one particular rocket launcher excepting, She would have Deep Sixed it the moment that she found out about it.

So the magic and the Slayer powers are totally gone? Whoa mother - that is huge!
It seems we're moving rapidly towards the no magic/no slayers situation in Fray. I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops.

I wonder what Buffy's idea is....

Is this the one we find out who Twilight is??

They were dismantling the submarine and trading its parts for weapons in the last issue. Kind of a dangerous game in Tibet, I would think.

The magic isn't gone forever, apparently... it just takes more time to re-start than they currently have.

I do wonder why Willow's magic is suddenly gone when she said last issue that she couldn't suppress it... and I wonder why it disappeared so quickly when, as she mentions, it was supposed to take longer.

Yeah, they were trading equipment from the sub with the locals for weapons, but how could they accumulate an arsenal THAT SIZE, complete with AP devices and modern assault weapons? Tibet has no 2nd Ammendment rights for their citizenry.
Wow, on top of everything else they now have to fight Iron Man as well. Damn you, Tony Stark, you killed Captain America!

In all seriousness, interesting preview. We are most certainly going to see some pruning of characters in the next couple of issues. In fact, I'd lay good money on an "important" character snuffing it (I'd say Dawn).

MAN I hope so. Though I'd hate to admit that Dawn's important. All of Xan's other girlfriends have died-- what's one more?:cheering:

It's weird to not see Jo Chen's cover like usual. But Massimo Carnevale also did a great job. And I've just known Jo Chen also didn't draw Issue#30 cover. Big surprise. I guess he gave all his time to the incredibly sexy Willow one-shot cover. 😛

And what's happening to Willow? I feel very sad for her. And I feel like some important characters are going to die. 🙁

I just hope that it's not Oz that dies, that would be the one deal breaker for me and s8, but it would make sense if Joss wanted to really throw Willow over the edge. I guess that applies to any of the main scoobies though really.

I miss Jo Chen's art as well, her cover awhile back with Warren on the front (#26?) , was spot on, but this Cover is also really great.

Yes. It
^ I was gonna say "Yes, it's #26", but I accidentally hit ENTER button. 😛

I hope Oz won't die too. And I never knew Jo Chen is a lady, lol.

Is anyone else really not liking season 8 anymore? I had high hopes for this arc and thought it would bring the series back to the level of quality it had during TLWH, NFFY, Anywhere But Here, and A Beautiful Sunset, but it hasn't kept me even remotely interested. And don't even get me started on the Xander/Dawn shipping and the ridiculous "Slayers are able to suppress their powers if they close their eyes and wish real hard" crap.

At this point, I'm just thinking, "Eh, wake me up when the Willow one-shot comes out and Twilight is revealed."

I'm neutral on Xander/Dawn. I think it's plausible if a little bit skeevy, and I'm sure it will work out as well as any Jossverse relationship.

I'm pretty sure there's more than meets the eye to the whole "Slayers suppressing their powers" thing. Willow is already suspicious about it, as these preview pages show. It was supposed to take months for their power to fade... and in Willow's case, she went from full power (last issue) to unpowered (this issue) in a matter of hours.

I don't trust Mrs. Oz.

Crazy Flakes, I agree the first 11 issues were the best, and once Wolves at the Gate came in things went south fast. So many absurd things happened in that arc. It's had enjoyable moments since then but it's becoming convoluted and they aren't filling in the big blanks like vamps in, slayers out, and it sounds like they never will. Retreat is my favorate arc in a long long time though. I'm just happy there's character moments and the group is together finally.

"Wolves at the Gate" was my favorite arc. "Predators & Prey" was spotty, but I'm liking "Retreat" a lot so far.

Same here. I love all those arcs. I think my least favorite book is the fourth with Time of Your Life. And even that arc had good moments.

Actually, Retreat is my favorite so far. It's filled with character moments. I love that they're finally focusing on the characters' feelings.
