When Buffy first met Angel, she had no idea that he was a vampire, mainly because the writers themselves hadn't decided at that point to make him one. By the time that she did learn, she was already had a chance to get to know him somewhat and become infatuated with him. The question here is, how do you think that their relationship would have been different if she had known from the beginning that he was, in fact, a vampire?

(Serious question here, folks, in no way trying to compare Buffy's relationships with Angel and Spike)

I think she wouldve staked him the first time they met. Buffy was new to the biz, so I don't think she would'/ve listened to the whole soul story. The reason why in the end she didn't stake him was a)her feelings for him and b) they actually had time to research Angel and notice he'd been a good boy for the past century. Hadn't that be the case, shye might've staked him right away.

On the oither hand, in The Wish they did meet for the first time, Buffy discovered he was a vampire, but he could still convince her not to stake him.

I would think that she'd stake him.

Interesting. But I guess the circumstances played a big part of that.

She would probably stake him if she had a chance. But she was attraced to him from the first time we saw him. I like this scenario where she got to know him, so I don't think about the other 😀

If, from the moment she knocked him to the ground she knew he was a vamp, she would have staked him. Even if they had managed to have their back and forth I still think she would have dusted him, but I think it would have nagged at her afterwards.

This was a guy who had been, for all intents and purposes, stalking her. If she had known he was a vamp, instead of standing having their little pow wow in the alley way, as soon as she knocked him to the ground, Buffy would have staked him. No question.

I love your sig, very pretty! :)
Well, as everyone else stated Buffy would have tried to kill him.

I use the word "tried" here because, well, Buffy was a 15 year old who'd been slaying for a year. Angel was a 26 year old guy who'd been a killing vampire for a couple hundred years. Yes, they made Angel (and Darla) abnormally weak on Btvs, but still, would she really have been able to kill him before he was able to warm her up to the idea?

Hm. I dunno, really. 😀

Buffy was 16. Joyce says so in the Welcome to the Hellmouth. lol

She might have been 15/16, but remember, this was the same girl who, a few days after this scene takes place, manages to kill Luke, someone who hadn't been defeated since 1860-something. She was the Vampire Slayer, it's kinda in her job description.

Plus, up until a year before this scene, Angel had been living in an alley in New York, eating rats to survive. He hadn't really killed any vampires, and he certainly hadn't been hunting any, or doing it for a couple hundred years.

Buffy managed to get the drop on Angel in this scene, as it aired, she would have had no problem, after she kicked him to the ground, running over and slamming a stake through his chest, especially as Angel wasn't expecting it. Which was evident by him just lying there.

1863. He was sleeping. :)
I think another consideration we have to think about here is that would Angel have fought her? I sincerely doubt he would have since his intentions were to help her. I actually think Angel would have somehow slinked away and thus avoided being staked. He certainly would have avoided a fight.

See, that's what I was thinking, too. But really, WHY was that girl so strong? Yes, she was a vampire slayer, but in S2 she was almost killed by Spike. Who's to say that Angel would be too weak?

Then again, the surprise factor, and the fact that he wouldn't really want to hurt her.

But then again, how would she have known that he was a vampire in the first place? She would've had to see his Fang Face, and I don't see him pulling that look anytime soon. 😀

Didn't Giles say something about a slayer should be able to pick a vampire out of a crowd or how that expressions goes.

Because she was so new, I imagine her vampire-detecting skills weren't in full effect yet. She's able to sense them later, as far as I can remember. Unlike Faith, who never developed that skill, otherwise she would have known Finch was human. I don't think we ever learned if Kendra had that power or not.

I don't think it was in full effect yet either. But if it worked just a little it could answer WO's question.
GrrArghx3 agrees: Buffy was 16. Joyce says so in the Welcome to the Hellmouth. lol

She couldn't have been 16. Buffy has her birthday on the third episode of the fourth disc every year. In S2 Innocence, she turned 17. Therefore, a year earlier, she would've turned 16. That would've been on the fourth disc. Ego, she must've been 15 when it started. 😀

As Lyri said, Buffy "Should" have been able to, but she wasn't yet, or else she would've known Angel was a vamp as soon as she met him.

The first season started in March of 1997. It was the second semester of Sophmore year when she arrived in Sunnydale, so she was very much 16.

But, she wasn't 15. She was 16. lol It doesn't matter when her birthday is in the next seasons, Joyce says she's 16:

Joyce: Oh, and that school is a, a very nurturing environment, which is just what you need.

Buffy: Well, actually...

Joyce: Oh, not too nurturing. I know, you're sixteen, I've read all about the dangers of over-nurturing.

Huh. Weird. 😀 Oh well, her birthday is in January, so I guess she must be 16...

(Although, how does Disc 4= January? 😀 )

Anyway, her age doesn't really matter. Her professionalism, on the other hand, does. Her training. Her willingness. All this is what makes you a good slayer.

In every season of Buffy from season 2 on Buffy starts in September, in season one Buffy starts in March. That's why the discs don't match up.

and let's not forget that Buffy still had not one, but TWO alternative birthdays to her later established January one (*points to the massive double blooper in "I Robot, You Jane")

Questions in order asked

1) Enhanced strength is part of the Slayer "package," along with accelerated healing and, probably, the ability to function normally on very little sleep.

2) Whatever his desires were about not wanting to hurt Buffy, Angel probably wouldn't have been able to convince her of that before he was staked.

3) The original question implies that she DID know that he was a vampire, however she became aware of the fact.

And incidentally, Spike almost killed Buffy in School Hard because she both underestimated his skill as a fighter and overestimated her own power. Up until that time, he was the first master vampire that she had ever had a toe to toe, head on fight with. She dusted both Luke from a distance with a drum cymbal, and the Master master by throwing him onto a wooden beam. No prolonged fight either time, but a large amount of luck both times. (Also, luck with Spike in the form of an enraged mother with a fire axe)

Interesting...I think Buffy was still in her black-and-white phase regarding vampires = always bad. So, all things considered, I'm sure she would have staked him upon meeting him in that alley if she had known he was a vampire, even though he attempted to help her.

When they first met, he had made no attempt whatsoever to help her in any way.

In fairness to Buffy though, she didn't have a reason to see things in anything but black and white. It was through getting to know Angel and then finding out what he was that grey was introduced to her life.
