This is my first thread here and I couldn't find anything recent on the topic (hope this is on the right board), but it seems that Multiverse the team who was creating the Buffy MMO game has been shutdown due to lack of funding.

(cant link because less than 15 posts)

I dont play videogames much of lately but I was definitely looking forward to this. Anyone else a little upset over this as well?

What's a MMO? Someone explain

MMO stands for "Massive Multiplayer Online". So basically you would get to team up with other people around the world and slay vampires and do quests together. Its too bad they couldnt finish it though.

That's a shame to hear. Then again, the MMO market is very much oversaturated anyway (WoW's superpower status, SWTOR kickstarting right now and GW2 being upcoming soon and muchly awaited too). Seeing how more and more MMOs switch to "free to play + Itemshop" models in order to keep any chance on the market (like AION, who said they'd never become F2P) it sure isn't promising for any programmer who's not damn convinced they can push out a triple-A MMO by themselves. And much as we love the show - the Buffyverse simply isn't a big enough franchise name to draw in enough players by franchise power alone if it's not triple-A (especially seeing as even Trek Online is preparing to go F2P over the next few months, and Trek is doubtlessly a much bigger license name). :sigh:

Whaaaa?? You lost me with all the acronyms.
F2P : free to play (financed by an ingame Item Shop where you'll pay - often through the nose - for individual items like costumes, power-ups, additional character classes etc.)
P2P : pay to play (monthly subscription fee)
B2P : buy to play (installing the client requires buying the software on DVD or over a download portal like Steam, e.g., just like for a singleplayer/offline game; after that, there won't be further subscription costs. May feature an Item Shop, too, but if it does, the Shop will usually be very noticeably cheaper than in an F2P.)

WoW : World of Warcraft (P2P, and the only MMO for which I don't consider this likely to change that in any foreseeable future)
SWTOR : Star Wars The Old Republic (just launched last month; P2P, not sure if they'll make it without switching to F2P sooner or later)
GW2 : Guild Wars II (the classic B2P MMO)
AION : the actual game name, even if it looks like an acronym 😉

triple-A : the big budget production, high-quality games. In the MMO sector, it basically boils down to WoW, SWTOR, GW / GW2, and Lord Of The Rings Online (the latter has switched to F2P about a year ago too, though), even though there's tons of other games of lesser quality (most of them, unsurprisingly, F2P).

LMAO you're right... It's just more proof that I would hate "The Guild".
I'm a huge Buffy fan, but to be honest, I don't think this game would have done well. I agree that the MMO market is over saturated at the moment and this game might have been overlooked.

I would have played this game for sure, but if the people making it werent spending that much money on it I doubt it would have been a very addictive game even though it was buffy :L

Just by the way, why they decided now to stopp the development? I mean Buffy is about 10 years old... Was just surprised, they had to work veery slowlyyy...
ohhh this is driving me crazzy...

I was playing Chaos Bleeds just recently and was thinking how great a MMO Buffy game would be, then I find out one was being developed only to be cancelled. 🙁

Was thinking about this the other day, hop on here and I catch this. Boo... 🙁 At least they released a new Buffy game for nintendo ds?

I had no idea that there was going to be a Buffy MMO. That's too bad. ):

My first post on this forum 🙂 hi to all!

I played the Buffy the Vampireslayer Playstation2 action-game many years ago. Altough that hardware only could support very confined areas like small graveyards and crypts it was fun to control Buffy and go for a slay. It got a bit repetive but i guess thats the nature of vampire-staking.

So too bad an mmo wasn't made as todays technology could make a great interactive Sunnydale (or Cleveland) with the right production team. According to the show there should be enough graveyards in Sunnydale for many slayer teams 🙂

Such a shame! The Buffyverse lends itself quite well to a video game medium, but unfortunately any premise will fall flat if not executed properly.

I'd rather no MMO than a bad MMO. Plus, how do you really have a Buffy MMO? Wouldn't everyone (or at least most of us) want to play a Slayer? The whole there-can-be-only-one thing kind of quashes that.

It'd obviously have had to be placed after "Chosen" in the timeline... which opens new problems in itself as so many people (myself definitely included) see the S8 comic continuation as the Jumping The Shark moment for the Buffyverse.

It still would have been comparable to the problems Star Wars Galaxies faced back then... everyone wants to play a Jedi, but to stay true to canon it will have to be some kind of hard to reach, elite class. One of the problems STG failed over in the end.

As an aside... for what it's worth, you may try out Champions Online (free to play superhero MMO). I've reached high enough levels to play in the Vibora Bay area by now - and with all its vampires, werewolves, demons and fallen angels, it almost feels like a Buffy MMO. Especially if you play a female melee character with Acrobatics. 😉
