Buffy movie being developed without Joss

I can't speak for everyone, but if the Kuzuis hadn't done such a terrible job on the first film, I'd be interested in seeing some kind of relaunch. So, yes, if Joss were doing the movie, I'd probably be completely cool with this. Even as it is, I'm not exactly outraged about it. I think it'll be bad, but I really don't see how it'll affect the TV we know and love at all. It'd be completely seperate, except for the name.

It will be a franchise with an identical name, in direct competition with Joss's, with 100 times the budget and media coverage.

From a purely practical (non-emotional) standpoint, that's my worry in a nutshell. That it will reduce Joss's Buffy to a nostalgia act, like those huge 80's bands that now struggle to draw crowds playing at county fairs and steak houses, while younger bands make millions recording covers of their songs.

Joss's is in a completely different medium right now though, with little chance of ever being revived on the screen. At best, a new film would get people thinking about Buffy and giving the TV show a try. At worst, this thing bombs and the Kuzuis have another terrible film on their resume. I really don't see that it takes away from the legacy of the show at all, especially since there is already a bad film people associate with the Buffy name.

I know Joss doesn't believe in God, and I'm not a religious man myself... but I pray that when people think of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" 20 years from now, it's Joss's Buffy they think of.

Andrew was talking about the Whedon Buffyverse. Joss specifically said that while he does like some of the supplemental stuff, nothing is canon unless it is written by him or mapped out by him and written by his team.

Even if David Fury or Marti Noxon (Whedon's appointed showrunners) write something without Whedon "Executive Producing" it, it's still not canon.
 
Hmmmmm. All I know FOR SURE is that the original BtVS "movie" sucked anus, BIG TIME. BtVS "series" was awesome. As was Angel. And I quite enjoy the fan-fic novels & so forth. But a re-make of the MOVIE... by the SAME PEOPLE ....? But without the same actors, or even the same characters, save for Buffy herself.

I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around the concept.

I mean sure, it COULD be a good movie. It COULD even be great. But without Whedon... I just highly doubt it.

Thank the goddesses I live in America, where no one can force me to watch anything against my will... 😉

If anything, I'd like to see a movie made in a couple more decades or so... I'd like to see SMG as Buffy... kicking butt as only a 50-year old slayer can... and be just as quick with the wit as teenage/young adult Buffy ever was... 😀
 
Put it this way, if Joss gave a toss about it as much as the fans he'd get himself involved in the movie. Wouldn't they love to have him? Do you think new star trek movies detract from the fans enjoyment of the original st? What fans in 20 years think isn't an issue.

For me, it's not a question of quality. It's the principle of the thing. As long as Joss is still around and still writing Buffy, then his version will be the only real one to me. Buffy's story has been growing and evolving in Joss's head for 17 years now, she's his baby, and his story is the one I'm interested in seeing... even if this movie is a "good" one by objective standards.
 
Well i think the comics are crap and a step down in quality, but i don't let it affect my view of the tv series. Does it bother you as much if some writer writes a comic you don't like. Same difference.
 
Oh well, fair enough. I hope this ends up being good and it starts a whole new era of lots of Buffy related stuff. Joss isn't the king. There are other good writers out there. Tbh if this movie doesn't work out im still happy that at least someones trying. Buffyverse needs to make a comeback.
 
For me, aside from the fact that this isn't Joss' vision of Buffy, what seems the most ridiculous is that the same director that brought us the atrocity that was the 1992 BtvS movie will be the one bringing us the new movie which multiple sources say will be not a prequel or sequel but a remake. Does no one else find this laughable? So the first time you made this movie it sucked so now you want a do-over? Its like having the very same people that made "Glitter" or [insert any other bad movie ever here] decide they are going to remake it and expect it to do brilliantly at the box office this time around! I mean it seems like a ludicrous notion to me. Remakes are usually re-imagined versions of the original film made by different people than made the first, and usually the remake comes a lot later than a mere 17 years after the first was made for christ sakes!

You know for me it would be a different issue if someone other than the folks that tarnished Joss' original vision further down the line decided to remake the movie, and hopefully they'd be smart enough to consult with Joss, ask him to write it or direct it or something, that way the story could be re-told only with less cheesy camp and more wit. The plan as it stands though is crap and I think Joss doesn't seem overly worried about it because I think he's pretty certain it'll never get off the ground.

If it was truly going to be a remake (rather than a re-boot), then at least it would still be Joss's story... and maybe a better adaptation of it than the one in 1992.

I doubt the Vertigo people are going to let the Kuzuis get anywhere near the director's chair with this movie... they'll be told to do what they've been doing for the past 12 years... sit down, shut up, and cash your paycheck.

As I said before, taking this project to Fox and asking them, and Joss, to get on board with a remake of the 1992 movie, done right this time, would be the winning strategy for everyone.
 
Well, there's no way it'll be a remake, it will be a relaunch if anything. They don't generally remake movies that are box office bombs, and critically panned. Plus at least one of these articles specifically said they were going to try telling the Buffy story in a darker fashion due to the success of films like The Dark Knight.

In other words, they're going to eliminate everything that distinguished Buffy from any random low-budget, grade-B horror exploitation flick.

Buffy succeeded due to its expert balancing of humor, adventure and darkness. People are talking about it like it was a wall-to-wall laugh fest. Yeah, I was doubled over with the guffaws when they killed off Jenny Angel Kendra Tara Joyce Buffy Anya Spike. But we need moar darkness! That means add in a scowling creepy little dead girl in a white dress with lots of mascara.

Clear out those $1.99 DVD bins... we have incoming.

Seriously, if they were smart they'd realize WHY the movie was a box office bomb and critically panned... because the clueless producers decided they were smarter storytellers than Joss. If the problem had been with his script or his concept, then it wouldn't be any more worthwhile to relaunch the movie than to remake it.

I don't get why they think the Buffy name-brand is so valuable to them, if they don't plan of giving audiences anything they've come to expect from that brand. It's like making a movie called STAR WARS EPISODE 7 and having it turn out to be a screwball comedy starring Kathy Griffin and DJ Qualls. "HA! We fooled you! And we've already got your money! No take-backs! Nyah nyah!"

I'd rank season 8 as one of my 2 or 3 favorite seasons. It's been a little awkward at times, especially with the recent "Predators & Prey" standalones, but I enjoy 90% of it... and it's the real story, from the Buffy storyteller.

No question... I'm on the Joss Whedon Buffyverse ride right to the very end.
 
Just got done listening to the commentary on "Not Fade Away" and at the end when the credits are rolling, Jeff Bell says to take a minute to read the names of all his colleagues, how much he'd enjoyed working with everyone and how much everyone credited contributed to the show "with the exception of two producers who's names I can't say cause Fox won't allow me to but they know who they are." Clearly referring to the Kuzui's. Thought it was interesting cause clearly there's a lot of resentment about them and not good feelings. Ugh really, can Joss or Fox not just buy back whatever rights to Buffy they have?! They really shouldn't be allowed to make a Buffy movie.
