Who do you believe Angel had a better connection with? Who do you think he loved more?

The "Who does Cordelia belong with" thread made me realize how many Cangel shippers there are. And obviously there are a lot of Bangel shippers.

The thing is, in the first scene of Chosen it was made pretty obvious that Buffy and Angel still have feelings for one another (at least in my interpretation lol). Buffy and Angel had an instant connection, very much love at first sight. Angel and Cordelia seemed more grounded to me, their love developed slowly over time. What do you guys think?

Angel and Buffy's relationship was kinda like puppy love, for Buffy anyway. I do believe Angel truly loved Buffy. He did a lot of things for her that a man (vampire) wouldn't do for someone they didn't really love. But Buffy was so young and immature in a lot of ways, and she didn't know yet what an adult relationship was about. The relationship was always all about the mystery and drama and I think they both needed to grow a lot.
Angel's relationship with Cordelia, however, started as friendship and grew naturally into a romance. It was organic and beautiful and sweet. It was a real, adult relationship that blossomed the way a relationship should: between two people who know each other well and take the time to really get to know each other before deciding if they should take that next step.

I think he was more "in love" with Buffy but I think he had a stronger "family" "friendship" bond with Cordelia and I thing Cordelia grew to actually know him better as a person. I'm not opposed to the idea of Cangel, I just think the writers chickened out and the audience didn't get to see it pan out enough to really tell if it could have been a romance like Fresley or Spuffy.

I love Bangel too and think he had an amazing and long lasting connection with Buffy but I'm usually very open to multiple ships.

For some reason though I don't care for his relationship with Nina. I love Jenny Mollen though. I just wish her character had been older (which is weird cuz Buffy never seemed to young for him when she was in high school).

Hope this topic stays civilized 😛

Anyways I'm known for my UN Ship-ness qualities but if I had to decide with a gun to my manhood area (guns to my head ontop my shoulders never scared me).

uh....I'd say Angel and Cordy.

Awesome karma.

Ok... I don't feel like writing a never-ending essay about who's best for Angel again right now, but I gotta comment this part.

That first scene in Chosen made zero sense. It was there to please Bangel fans, imo. Angel would have never acted like that and kissed Buffy the way he did, just after losing his son and Cordy being put in a coma, no no no. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been happy to see her. But the way he acted, throwing one liners and then that cheesy kiss, no freaking way! And then he act all childlike because Spike got a soul and he loves Buffy... There was no way Angel would be in a state of mind to react the way he did in 'Chosen', period.

Yeah I have to agree with this. If we think about Angel's story as far as what he would have been doing on his own show at that time, it definitely does not fit with how he would have been acting at that time.

I think there are two different answers for those two questions. I think Angel had a better connection with Cordelia, but he loved Buffy more. If he had more time with Cordelia, I think they could have become the perfect couple. But because of all that sh*t that happened in season 4, there wasn't alot of time for them to develop as strong feelings for each other. Cangel also wasn't love at first sight, like it was with Bangel. They developed a wonderful friendship which turned into a beautiful love, only to be cut short by annoying circumstances. I personally think, while I love Bangel, Cordelia fits better with him.

Cordelia no doubt in my mind is who he loved and had a better connection with. I think the thing that I can never take seriously about Bangel is they aren't really a couple to me they don't have a relationship. A relationship takes work you stick with it through the good and the bad that is exactly what Angel and Cordy have. They didn't always see eye to eye but in the end they were always right beside each other until the very end.

The scene in chosen I think it was more of a former kiss if anything. I don't think it meant I still love and want you right now. I also think it was Joss doing it to make the Bangel fans happy for the Spuffyness later on.

Now I am with a lot of people and think that if Cordy and Angel had more time they would have been epic. I don't think he loved Buffy more just because like I said he was with Cordy through thick and thin. Also she is the only one that truly gets him back one track. I think Angel and Cordy are on of the few relationships in the whedonverse that I take as seriously as my other ships and other shows. Overall I think he loves Cordy more. I think with Buffy he loved the idea of them more than anything else.

Also with Cordelia, Angel wasn't MEOW WAPISH!

Lol, I'll make sure to stay out of it 😉

Nah seriously though, I don't think it's a secret what I think about Cangel. So without a doubt in my mind I'll say Buffy. The only reason they didn't spend time together in the way Cordy and Angel did was because they met when she was a teen and because of the shows construction. Had he stuck around (not that I vote for that mind you) their connection would have grown and they would have learned how to share their lives in another than the 'puppy love' sense because they would both have been given the chance to mature emotionally (which they both needed)

Cordy and Angel.

Merely because, Angel actually smiled in her presence.

However, I DO like Bangel. But we all know that Spike is Angel's real true love here. 😉

But, alas, this is a discussion of Cangel. They had a strong friendship before they got all lovey-dovey, it equals stronger bond.

Buffy. No questions asked. It's not because I ship Bangel that I don't like Cangel.. it's because in every damn show, when you see a beautiful friendship on the horizon, they have to ruin it with the romance. Call me crazy, but sometimes, it's nice to see male/female bonding without the need of sex. If Cordelia and Angel kept being friends, maybe then I would say they had a better connection than him and Buffy.. but this way, I refuse it.

I do agree that it is nice to see male/female friendships without romance or sex getting in the way, but I loved how it worked with Cangel IMO :)
I don't like Cangel but I think it was just a different type of love. With Buffy it was young and innocent but his relationship with Cordelia was something more mature and grounded. I think he had a connection with both of them but in different ways. I think it was a bit unnecessary to make Angel and Cordelia fall in love though, felt a bit contrived.

I have to admit that he had better chemistery with Buffy. However, I'd prefer Angel with Cordy, even though it (still, after all these years) seems weird to my eye.

Also, I want to add, I realized that Cangel has become a very popular ship, almost as popular as Bangel and Spuffy. And it's weird, don't know why, so don't ask me why.

By the third season of "Angel," I believe that, the way that the show was being written, Angel was closer to Cordy (and not just geographically) than he was to Buffy. If Joss hadn't gone off on the tangent with Cordy and Connor in Season 4, I fully believe that their (Angel and Cordy) relationship, their ROMANCE, would have been so obvious and undeniable that the Bangels throughout the world would have been weeping real tears.

(The following has nothing to do with the original question, so feel free to skip it entirely)

Having said that, I will also go so far as to suggest that, if the show had gone on for another year or two, or even longer, I honestly believe that Angel's feelings for Nina would have developed into full blown adult romance. I think that the character was originally introduced and was being developed for that express purpose. I know that there were cerious plans being formed to bring Oz onto the show, either as a recurring guest or a full time regular, instead of Spike for the express purpose of teaching her how to repress or even control her changes

So when should the Nina fanclub meet? ;) I'll bring snacks!
For Angel, Buffy and Cordy are his greatests.

His greatest love in Buffy. His greatest friend in Cordy.

I think it would be very hard to overestimate how pivotal each of those women were in shaping the man(pire) we know today. And I think it would be a disservice to both relationships to try and quantify who meant more to him. They both meant everything to him. They continue to mean everything to him.

The connection between Cordy and Angel is more obvious because we were allowed see that. The nature of his bond with Cordelia, and the exploration of that bond, was never a threat to Angel's soul. So we get to see how he is when he opens up, we get to see Cordy encouraging him, inspiring him, giving him a kick up the backside when he needs it.

We get to see them happy together.

With Buffy and Angel though, we are only allowed glimpses. But it's there, dear God is it there. I think it is often forgotten how witty and teasing Angel is before he loses his soul. He's playful with Buffy, he smiles. A lot, actually. That tends to be overshadowed by the tragedy. But it's there. Not only for Angel, but for Buffy too.

Once Angel returns from Hell they spend must of their energy actively not being happy together, for fear it would trigger the curse, or lead to something else that would trigger it. They still can't help but bring each other joy. That's just who they are to each other. Even if you look at IWRY, have either of them ever been so goofy happy? Or in Chosen, when was the last time Buffy looked so God damn radiant, than those few seconds when she was basking in Angel?

You cannot discredit either relationship or the level of influence they have had on his life.

Quite frankly, Angel is blessed to have the infinite love and devotion that Buffy and Cordy give to him.

He had a much better connection with Cordy than he did with Buffy; probably more than he ever could with Buffy.

Who do you believe Angel had a better connection with? Who do you think he loved more?

I think Angel had a better connection with Cordelia because of their strong friendship. And as a result of this friendship based on faith, trust, understanding, and compatibility, their love for each other was deeper than what he experienced with Buffy. I don't like using the word "immature" when it comes to describing Bangel, believe it or not. But, when compared to Cangel, I do think Cangel is more mature because both Angel and Cordy matured through their relationship together. They "groo." 😉 And NO ONE made Angel smile or laugh like Cordy did. 🙂 "Halloween" anyone?

I also think Angel loved Cordelia more than Buffy. I don't usually like saying that because I believe people love others in ways rather than amounts, but in this case, I do think Angel loved Cordy more. His reaction over Cordy's death makes me think that. Angel wasn't broken up over Buffy's death. I'm not saying her death didn't mean anything to him (because I know it did), but rather he wasn't connected to Buffy as much anymore. He wasn't lost without Buffy. He was able to get by on his own, which is great but also a sign that he moved on IMO.

However, Cordy's death completely ate away at him. He lost both his best friend and the woman he loved when Cordy died. Yet, even before she died, Angel admitted he was lost without Cordy. Her strength, guidance, support, and very presence became a part of him. So, when he lost Cordy while she was in a coma and after she died, he lost part of himself, which caused him to feel extremely emotional whenever he thought about her. That showed me that he loved Cordy more because her death deeply affected him (just as Buffy's death deeply affected Spike).

For me, Angel found something in Cordelia he didn't expect. He found a deep and lasting friendship and love. Once he let go of Buffy, he was able to find what he really needed and he found it in Cordelia. 🙂 It's why I still cry buckets when I watch "You're Welcome" because they would have been PERFECT if they had their chance. Damn you Joss, lol!

I agree with you so much, it's insane. Angel really did fall in love with Cordy, (who wouldn't?) and was able to move on from Buffy in a mature way. Angel and Buffy was great in the way that they were a great first love relationship, and once that ended, after a small grieving process of the relationship, they both successfully moved on. This is very evident for Angel in Heartthrob, where he's upset that Buffy's dead, but, as he puts it, he's "okay". He's let go of her by this point. He still cares. But he's no longer in love with her. Angel and Cordelia were beautiful together, and when Cordy dies, Angel, in some ways, falls apart. He's clearly much more effected by this than he was with Buffy's death.

It's really not up to fans to decide what actions make sense. Because, at the end of the day...it happened. Angel kissed Buffy, he did the one-liners, and despite how much you and others don't like it, you can't change it or pretend it never happened. Angel clearly had feelings for Buffy at the beginning of Chosen.

Not necessarily, writers can be swayed by fans sometimes. If they wanted Bangel, he gave it to 'em
