My wife and I have been re-watching Harry Potter over the last few days. We got in a playful debate on which is better, Harry Potter or Buffy. I admitted that I think Harry Potter is probably better on almost every comparable aspect that there is still something that Buffy has over Harry Potter. I really couldn't put my finger on it and still can't. I was wondering which you guys might think is the better series/show/etc.

Again, I think Harry Potter is beautifully written, filmed, full of story and character arcs, and so on. However, Buffy has something that H.P. doesn't.. and it might just be that I am bias, hahah. I know it's comparing a 90s TV Show Reboot from 90s Movie to a 00's Film Series based from an earlier Book collection

I think Harry Potter is the better of the two, but I (obviously) enjoy both.

The difference for me is HP was strong throughout the entire series, whereas the same can't be said for BTVS.

Buffy, of course 😛. Because I feel that the series kept a strong focus on more characters than just the central three (Buffy-Willow-Xander), and the others simply weren't background characters

If we're talking strictly the movies vs. the BTVS series, then I think Buffy is better. I'm one of the few massive Harry Potter fans who isn't a fan of all the movies, it seems. I loved the first two but when they lost Christopher Columbus as the director for Prisoner of Azkaban, I found it got really stylized. Movies three and four I didn't care for all that much, but I liked five, six and seven.

The books however, are amazing. Absolutely incredible. I think I can safely say that I enjoyed reading the Harry Potter books just as much as I loved watching the Buffy series. I haven't read them in years but I remember loving every one of them.

My wife keeps bugging me to read the books. I suppose I should. :eek2:

Well, it depends. If we're talking about the Harry Potter films then everything about Buffy is stronger. To me the Harry Potter films are very weak in places. While I enjoy every single Buffy season and episode I do not enjoy every Potter film to it's fullest. Order of the Phoenix (despite being one of my favourite books), Half Blood Prince and Chamber of Secrets are far from films that I would watch over and over by choice despite my love for the Harry Potter series.

But bringing the books into account I draw it at a tie. Buffy and Harry Potter are both very different with some similarities. The books for Harry Potter are so wonderfully crafted. J.K Rowling invented an entire world full of lovable and not so lovable characters throughout. The Buffy series is full of wonderful wit and humor as well as episodes that rip my heart out. Plus, there's Spuffy while in Harry Potter there are not ships that I cling onto so much. But I put it at a tie because both have beautiful aspects.

But if it was the Harry Potter films...Goblet of Fire, Prisoner of Azkaban and Deathly Hallows Part 2 were absolutely perfect but the rest of them...Buffy is better.

Buffy for me when it concerns visual media. The HP books are lovely and I've re-read them a lot, I'll never forget getting hooked on the series, but when it comes to the movies I think they're very uneven in quality. They vary too much from each other in general feeling and when they change the story it's (imo) OOC and unnecessary.

Buffy may not have the same kind of story, which to me makes them hard to compare, but for me the show is of a better and more coherent quality than the HP movies.

Also I think Buffy has a better ending (i.e. the TV series) which I enjoy watching whereas I will never forgive JK Rowling for the epilogue in HP that tarnishes some of my love for the end of that particular series.

Buffy! I'm really no Harry Potter fan. I haven't read any of the books and I haven't even seen all of the movies. I don't really care about the fantasy genre in general. By the way, I haven't seen the third LOTR movie either.

HP books > Buffy > HP movies
But Buffy is somehow more addictive (in that I'm involved in Buffy fandom, but not HP fandom).

That is a really tough question. I haven't read the books (and probably never will, 'cause I never have time to read for fun anymore), so I don't really know. I enjoyed Buffy a lot more because of the comedy aspect of it, but the world of HP is so much more developed and intricate.

I must be one of the few people who didn't like HP at all. It just never clicked with me. So to me, Buffy trumps HP (books and movies) without question.

Now, I absolutely loved Harry Potter when I was younger, and it's something that was essential to my life for quite a long time. However, I think that Buffy is superior. It's a lot smarter, better characters, better writing. I still quite like Harry Potter, but I have to say that Buffy is just better.

I'm still a big Harry Potter fans, particularly the books, but agreed. The characters in Buffy are much deeper and a lot more complex.

However, I think that the Harry Potter universe is quite a bit more intricate, as someone mentioned above. And that's saying something, because the mythology of Buffy and her world is excellent and fleshed out.

I'll give it the world being larger and more developed, but that happened at the expense of the characters, and sometimes at the expense of the plot.

Uhm...this is a VERY hard question.
If we're talking about HP movies then Buffy wins cause HP movies were often rushed and glissed over important aspects and some characters were strongly ooc (even though the last two movies were really good).

If we're talking about the overall story, characters and THE BOOKS then HP wins, I'm really sorry. I feel it's a more complete journey, sometimes better thought than Buffy and in general, it brings way more to the table.

This question makes me want to cry 😛

I love Buffy and I love HP, I can't do it! I'd have to pick Buffy over the HP movies, but Buffy vs the HP books... I couldn't choose. They're very different things and very different mediums. But urgh no I love them both don't make me choose! Both are very big things in my life in different ways!

Buffy...no wait. Harry. No Buffy. Nooooooooo I don't know 🙁

Hardest question ever, Buffy wins over the movies for sure, but over the books? Hmm. Let's see. Buffy taught me that things die when you stab them. Harry Potter taught me that things die when you point sticks at them. They both made me cry, made me laugh, made me understand love, life and family. Mmmm...Buffy! Harry!

I am unable to choose :/

I have to go with Harry Potter, just because it was such a major part of my childhood, whereas I only got into Buffy 2.5 years ago.
