Buffy or Harry Potter

I never quite got the fantasy world - someone comes up with a better magic wand or a better spell, it seems like some of the things Willow was doing when she was at her worst (and least entertaining). The whole fantasy scene just seems so whimsical and arbitrary - certain things can or cannot happen with no rhyme or reason whereas the characteristics of vampires are well catalogued and we do not run into things that need this kind of definition as often.

Harry Potter was designed around characters in the latency period when there is no sexuality or adult romance whereas the Buffy characters started as teenagers and faced all the drama and angst that was never part of Harry Potter. I could not really relate to Harry Potter whereas I could definitely relate to all the issues faced in Buffy. Buffy just seemed to be more complete and less whimsical, so Buffy gets the nod as the better entertainment.
 
I'd have to go with HP for the books. I love how the books grew up with their audience. I also love the messages it gives out 🙂

As for the HP films and BTVS, I think they're equal. But if someone put a gun ti my head and said I had to choose, I would probably choose HP, if only because the books are amazing.

I have to go with BTVS. I do admire Prisoner of Askaban and The Half Blood Prince, yet as hard as this can be to explain.... I can never picture myself as friends with the characters in Harry Potter. All the Buffy characters that I really like such as Willow, Anya, Buffy, Angel... and eventually, Faith come across as inclusive and diverse (if the sorting hat was on their heads, they'd be put in different houses). Also, they are better characters: more developed. Harry Potter does have a more detailed and layered universe (and I am a sucker for those Christmas scenes), but as some previous posters have mentioned ; at the expense of development of characters. And I'm still yet to meet a person who agrees with me on this, but HP is a bit too ''traditional'' for my liking. Families are portrayed as functioning all the time, The triwizard competition in The Goblet Of Fire, is only really still going on as it is ''tradition'' even though a student may be selected against their will and risks their life considerably- some kind of warped SlayFest if you ask me.

Harry Potter is alot of fun, don't get me wrong, but Buffy is more emotionally satisfying and is willing to take completely likeable characters in darker places, and I believe, that's what makes it better.

Really interesting point about being friends with the characters. I could see myself being friends with Ron, but beyond him, yeah, it's a little tough to picture. That's not the case with the BTVS characters. I mean hell, I'm practically dating Buffy in my head right now 🙂.

And yeah, the Harry Potter Christmas chapters are awesome.

Actually, The Triwizard Tournament accepts volunteers. No one was called against their will in ages except for Harry but that was a plan by Voldemort. And I strongly disagree about functioning and traditional families...basically the only one is Ron's.

Buffy without one second's thought. The Harry Potter movies ruined what was so special about the books imo. They made them too childish & targeted to a younger audience. Plus I thought they could've been done better. That's just my opinion though. I would've preferred for the whole Harry Potter series to have had a more serious, darker mood to them.
 
I would without a doubt have to say Buffy. I enjoyed the first and second last HP films but the others were a let-down to me. They were such great books that I feel weren't depicted well enough on film. I kind of felt like the heart of it was lost in the special effects. I prefer the detail of the books to the movies. However, I could never read The Half-Blood Prince...for some reason I could just never get into that book (and I tried several times). I have however read The Goblet of Fire about 6 times - loved it. Buffy to me is just a better concept and is portrayed a lot better - I can relate to the characters more and find myself wanting to be in their universe more. It's a lot more consistent and well basically, I just love it. I can't say that I've re-watched any of the HP films except for the first 2.

I don't think you can really compare buffy to Harry potter because they aren't all that similar but if I had to choose it would be buffy, but that's probably because I am biased too haha!
 
Buffy for both visual and story. Though its hard to copare for two reasons:

1. Visually its hard to compare because HP had around $247 million more in the budget to create something amazing.

2. Compire writing for a tv show and a novel are two completely different things. There's a limit to what you can do on television. In a novel you could basically go to Antarctica and the Amazon in the same day. When tv doens't have the budget to fly its actor sto the Amazon or Antarctica.
 
I re-watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for the first time in ages a few days ago, and I wasn't overly impressed. Now, the books, all of them, are some of my favorite pieces of literature of all time, and I think in an above post I said that I would probably give the slight edge to them over Buffy.

But man, the movies for me, especially beyond the first two, aren't fantastic. And am I the only one who just can't stand Daniel Radcliffe as an actor? Seriously, everything he and Emma Watson do seems forced, like they're trying to play a part. He just can't do any sort of emotion. It really, really took me out of the feel of the movie.

I actually admire how Daniel's developed through the years and I actually don't him and Emma's acting at all. And Daniel is very emotional to me, I guess it's just a matter of opinions. Him and Emma are pretty good in non hp roles.
