I might have mentioned this in a thread here before but having watched a couple of season six episodes last night i was reminded of something that really bugs me about the opening credits to the sixth and seventh seasons of Buffy.

Every season, as the title music is ending, there is a final shot of Buffy looking all dramatic and moody, just before the episode itself begins again. All very cool and everything.

My only problem is that for the final two years the shots used were not actually of Buffy herself at all. At the end of the titles for season six we were given a shot of the Buffybot and for the end of the titles of season seven it was actually a shot of the First in Buffy's form. Okay, technically all of them were Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the show isn't called "Sarah the Actress", it's called Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Therefore, in my mind the final shot should have been one of Buffy herself, specifically.

Yeah, i know, minor detail, it just REALLY bugs me sometimes!!!! :lmao:

I noticed the season 7 one but not the season 6 one.

Thats a really good point. I feel cheated now. 😛

I noticed it before, I didn't feel cheated enough to make a thread 😛... but I do share your concern... as if it was too much trouble to do a nice power-shot of Buffy!

LMAO! Yeah, i know, nothing like dwelling on insignificant detail, is there! 😀

Truthfully, this is something that i noticed way back when i was watching season six the first time around and saw the shot of the Buffybot. It was only compiled when i saw that they had used a shot of the First for season seven. It's not an issue that is exactly ever going to make me lose any sleep at night but it is a point of interest. It was only because it occured to me again last night that i thought i'd start a thread here and see what everyone else thought about it.

Its the little things that bother me. There is so much detail in the show that you'd think they could get something like that right!

i don't think there were many shots of Buffy looking all powerful and whatever during S6, which is why they chose the Bot image. and most of the 'powerful' shots in S7 took place nearer the end, when the credits had already been made and were running with each ep...therefore they used an image of Buffy from the first ep, even though it actually The First.

But i do agree with you, Watcher, it always bugged me too, i've just spent WAY too much time thinking about it!

OK, here's how big of a freak I am....I manufactured this massive theory that that particular detail 'meant something'. Because the False Buffy shots only came after Buffy died. I don't remember it now, but it had something along the lines of "None of this is real" like in Normal Again.

Or it could be, because if you think about it, that after season 5 Buffy lost control she came back in season 6 and she was not herself she was not the true leader of the group, she is playing the part of the leader but she does not feel it, almost like she is being replaced, and in season 7 she is not in control of anything, the first is calling all the shots, it has all the power up until the 'Chosen'!

I thought about it but it never really bothered me. And like somebody said, Buffy didn't have that many power shots in the last couple of seasons.

When you think about it both ARE Buffy. Buffybot was programmed by Willow to be just like Buffy in the Gift, and in Lessons, Buffy as the first is kinda like evil-buffy. It has the mannerisms, the occasional banter, and the buffy stuff that buffy does, PLUS an evil side. OR it could just be me thinking too much.

The problem i have with that is that whilst both "beings" are duplicates of Buffy, they aren't actually Buffy, specifically. Basically you are looking at a robot and a non-corporeal evil entity, rather than a vampire slayer.

Just seemed a little odd to me. Mind you, i would have prefered them to continue using that excellent shot of her from Anne, that they used in a previous season for that power shot. NEVER has she looked sexier than in that scene!

LOL!! i hate that shot!! i NEVER liked it, and i can't tell you why!
for me, i would have liked them to keep the shot from S1&2...it's an awesome shot and reminds us where Buffy started, way back in the second ep.

Hate ... it ... how ... possible ... Buffy ... looking ... so ... damn ... sexy ... :confused1

😀

Although i actually do love that shot from The Harvest you mentioned too. There is just something incredibly cute about Sarah when she has that pissed off look on her face! lol!

OMG!! I agree so much!! There is just something about that shot, she looks amazing!

Yeah, I noticed that little tidbit after waching a bit of each season, but that did bug me a little, just because you're right it is "BUFFY the vampire slayer" and there were just so many powerful shots of her that they could have used instead, I wasn't a fan of putting in non-Buffy's for that one. Especially for season 7, if there was a season they should have used Buffy for that shot, it was that one I think... it was the final season, and it meant that in the very last episode of buffy, in the very last theme song, we didn't actually see THE character we'd all watched for 7 years. It's not something that I'm HUGELY brassed off about, but it still bugged me a little

But it was still a shot of SMG. Most fans probably dont care. Or maybe it's just me.

Well, yeah! The fact that it's still Sarah is sort of a given. The point of this thread though is, is that enough? The show is called Buffy the Vampire Slayer and yet the final shot of the last two seasons worth of opening credits were the Buffybot and the First.

If all that mattered was that it had to be a shot of Sarah at the end then why not just use a good clip of her from one of her various movies or maybe from an interview she did on tv? Wouldn't be Buffy though, would it?

Wow, good point.
While i see your point, and agree that in season 7 it should have been Buffy that was the final shot, it kinda feels appropriate that it was a faux Buffy in season 6, simply because most of the season Buffy wasn't herself, she had many issues, and at most of the points, i bet she would liked to have changed places with the BuffyBot. Infact for that entire season, buffy feels disconnected from the world, her friends and the viewer, hence why many fans dont like it(i love season 6 though), so i dont know if it was intentional or not, but in that one instance, it felt right to have a 'pretender'.

Y'know, it's funny you should say that because it did cross my mind back when i first watched Bargaining Parts 1 and 2 that it was very appropriate seeing the Buffybot in place of Buffy, given what was happening on the show with the 'Bot taking her place in Sunnydale. Had they changed the shot for one of Buffy for After Life then it would have been a really cool idea to have done that. Pity they didn't.

I do get what you are saying about how Buffy was far from being herself throughout the majority of season six, though. That makes the "not actually Buffy" oversight slightly less annoying for that season at least. There are no excuses for the season seven error though. I mean, at least Buffybot was one of the good guys, the credits of season seven highlighted the frickin' ultimate evil!!!! 😀
