Buffy references in Dollhouse

And seriously dude - I think you should chill out a bit and join in the spirit of 'discussion.' Do you have something really large, lodged somewhere really uncomfortable?! I'm just trying to determine why you're being so damn...'bitchy' seems appropriate!

I've just decided I don't like you.
I make rash decisions but stick with them, I need not explain any more than that.

I decided from the off I didn't like you x x

Well while we both try not to lose sleep over the fact we don't like each other (I'm sure some of the board find it amusing and I know I love it), might I suggest we let this discussion get back on topic?

I look forward to seeing more of your 'learned' comments in other threads, I can always use a good laugh, but for now, its time to move on.

I'm not saying that the phrase is JUST a reference, what I am saying is that when Joss decided on the name he knew that it WOULD be a reference AS WELL as having meaning in the show.

Like I stated, a 'nod' which is a reference.
Doesn't devalue the meaning BUT shows that there is a connection.

In fact its possible that he remembered the meaning of the title from his Buffy days.

As for the title of the episodes, it is predominently the show runner that comes up with them, when they come up with the basic outline for the episode.

EB, are you arguing this based on the assumption that the Dollhouse episode was titled Tabula Rasa? Because it wasn't. It was nothing more than a passing phrase used in the episode to describe the Actives.

While probably not a direct reference - I'm sure Joss didn't sit down and say "how do we work the phrase Tabula Rasa into this weeks ep" - I'm sure he knew that it would give (at least some of) us a little smile.

And on that note, as you said, let's keep this thread to noting possible references to the Buffyverse and not arguing excessively about their validity.

theres no way Joss didnt know that his fans would see it as a nod to the btvs ep, but it wasnt a forced nod at all, its PERFECT for Dollhouse and has so much to do with the Actives.

I do find all Joss (and joss related peoples work) interesting to pick up on these refrences, if its only the fans that make these details important.

In last weeks episode i saw a lot of Alias in there...

Agreed. I love the things that are so natural that you can't quite tell if it was intentional or not because it fits so well!

I totally agree about the Alias thing. Echo and Boyd is so Syd and Dixon!
Joss throwing in "tabula rasa" and not thinking, Oh - Buffy fans will smile at that.. is crazy. I mean, how often do you hear "tabula rasa" thrown around?

I'm most likely wasn't something he purposely threw in there just to get Buffy fans all hot and bothered, but he definitely knew people would make a connection. Why is this even an argument?

you could ask the same way "how often do you see people that have been completely memory wiped?". and i have heard that term multiple times at school, in more than one subject
Because there arn't any real references for us to discuss 😛

Oh.. well. Yeah, I guess that makes sense.

But I still think the only nod worth noting (imo) is Boyd to Echo to what was Giles to Buffy. And maybe Eliza's performance in Stage Fright seeming a bit Faith-like... But like whats his name said, that could just be Eliza not being able to expand her acting range. *shrugs*

You know what? I'm am about through here.

Let's just forget it then. People want to register here just to argue about stupid things, go right f-in ahead. So sorry for thinking trying to figure out cute little Joss winks might actually be FUN and could happen without people going around trying to show everyone how bleeding smart they are because they know a damn philosophy term.

I don't know why I bother keeping this stupid place around anymore, if THIS is all that happens.

overreact much?

Show us some more references then. Were discussing the possibilities...even if they are stretches.

I mean, show us more references? There's only been 4 eps so far! I don't think she overreacted at all, the arguing got real ridiculous real fast.
Whoooa Buffy. Easy there. Lets refrain from using the season 7 attitude. It's all good.

Arguing is a healthy part of life! And I'm sorry, but it inevitable with this kind of forum format. And its not like we hold it against each other - is it EB?! Lol.

And we weren't going around trying to show how clever we are, unfortunately the fact it IS a philosophical term was integral to the use of the word.

And if you want to try and stop arguments and people having a difference in opinion then the element of 'discussion' goes right out the window...

Not differences of opinion, but rudeness.
I would not go so far as to say it is a Buffy 'reference' but I found the end of episode 4, and the swimming pool scene, strangely related to the ending of Buffy's Normal Again. Buffy crouched in a fetal position in the corner trying to ascertain reality and Echo in the same position in the swimming pool. Now, if anyone wants to discuss the symbolism of the pool (though I think it was fairly evident by the rest of the episode so I dont think there is a massive need) but the pool scene itself could be compared to the potion that Willow made for Buffy to drink.

In the interest of keeping the peace, i took a few screencaps...how about this one. Dollhouse E2 The Target - Buffy S3E14 Bad Girls
