So Iv done Gone - which is really lazy/horrible tv by the show. The whole Invisible Buffy v Invisible Trio is literally a blank stage with some actor voice recordings!!!
Plus Buffy ruining that Social workers life for literally doing her job. I dunno what the writers were thinking, that somehow the audience would find that sympathetic????

It's pretty cringe, I agree.
Because @nightshade locked the thread just before I clicked "Post reply"... 😀

"hes said Buffy is who he imagined himself as a girl (and who he'd like to date)"

I guess that means Joss wants to date himself? That would explain a lot.

"But good god the whole magic is drugs thing is awful. Willows whole agency from doing things out of her own insecurities and choices is now her as a Heroin junkie (complete with shakes)"

It's even worse when you consider that in seasons 4 and 5 magic was a metaphor for Tara and Willow being together. That is not the only example of, well, homophobia in the season. Once you get up to multiple times, it's a pattern.

Now, I did read that, like many of the stories in season six, they were never intended to be Buffy stories - this one was "trusted friend gets teen hooked on drugs" - but were instead basically rejected story ideas for other shows.

I dunno what the writers were thinking, that somehow the audience would find that sympathetic????

Apparently some do. I have no idea why.

Apparently some do. I have no idea why.

I did read that it was due to Alison Hannigan who was worried that fans might not like her character after the heel turn and Joss changed it for her though Iv no idea if thats true or not.

But yeah the previous seasons Lesbian metaphor "Willows gone all wiccy living the wiccy life style" to a drug addiction was pretty awful

The writers do have a if Buffy does it then its ok mentality.

@NotASlayer @garfan @silvermoon
So I saw both Double Meat Palace and Dead Things
DMP, Jane Espenson has said this was her worst episode on the show.
Yeah making fun of McDonald's workers/joyless sex in an alley way and Buffy getting attacked by a Giant penis monster and yeah I can see why she says that 🤨
Dead Things is good though very dark. The Trio attempting rape and committing murder then trying to make Buffy think she did it is awful. As was that horrific beating she gave Spike 😬
Plus that Balcony Scene was just unescessary.
Though Spike did have a darkly humorous line
Spike "I got rid of the body they'll never find her"
Cop "they found a body washed up on the river bank"
Spike "balls"😂😂

Joan the Vampire Slayer

Agree with all of this.
Spike living in a cemetery but not knowing how to hide a body will always be peak stupidity for any character; there is no worse fail on the show. The guy is a 100+ year old serial killer, living in a crypt, and teenage Faith did a better job of covering up a crime. lol

Also Spike thinking Buffy would be OK throwing an innocent woman's body away like rubbish, like he did her a favour.

To be fair Spike's never been the sharpest tool in stuff like this Angel "you hired a Vampire to find the ring, what do you think he's gonna do, hand it over to you"
So As You Were
When I first watched it back in the day I saw it as Riley fanfiction. Now 26 years later and.... I still see it as Riley fan fiction. You only have to listen to his DVD Commentaries to know Doug Petrie loved Riley "hes just so cool" but this is goes to another level.
Straight away the dialogue is contradictory. The Sulboti Demon is nearly extinct yet its also a breeder that can spawn Thousands...
And Riley never told Buffy he's tracking the Demon to the eggs and not to kill it... why not, reasons I guess !
Sam is Rileys Superior but he rescued her as she was a part of a Missionary group ????
Spike is an International Arms Dealer called The Doctor 😐
Look I get the writers intention. They want to show that Spike is evil and wrong. But at least do it in character.
Its why fans try to head cannon that Spike was simply holding them to get money for Buffy. Thats still evil but also in character for Spike. The idea of him being an International Arms Dealer is just nuts ...
Now there is still some good stuff in the Episode
Riley "Iv got a lot of stuff to tell you that you wouldn't believe"
Buffy "Did you die ?"
Riley "No"
Buffy "Im gonna win" 😂

Speaking of Killers watching Buffy and Xander execute Anyas victim (which she feels no remorse for) in front of a cheering crowd in Hells Bells is kind of jarring

So Normal Again
While its well shot it's a really miserable episode with a major failure of writing.
1 Buffy is pretty much clinically depressed the whole episode which is grim.
2 The retcon that she was in a mental Institute at 15 after she became the Slayer and retroactively makes Joyce a horrible parent
3 The ending shot of her in the mental ward is a basic 101 writing failure. Its a reveal scene which is saying this is all in Buffys head. At the time of airing the writers then had to go online and assure the fans that no the whole show (and its spin off!) Are not all in Buffys head. Tbh ot smacked of the writers being up there own arses and being to clever for there own good.
All in all I don't like this episode. I don't like the retcon and I don't like the ending.
The depression style tone and scenes they were going for could've worked for an episode but those bits caused the episode to fail.

I did recently make a post on why this episode makes every episode after The Gift canonically non-canon "Normal Again" Or, Why Every Episode After "The Gift" is Canonically Non-Canon 😀

Although the truth is the writing is utter garbage, which sums up the season's writing in general. As @thetopher pointed out, it doesn't even work with the previous seasons. Joyce's unreaction to Buffy talking about vampires in earlier episodes does not work with the idea that she previously had Buffy committed for talking about vampires. And this is only one instance where S6 and later don't match up with prior continuity. If I didn't know better, I'd assume the entire writing team had never really watched seasons 1-5.

Apparently Joss Whedon originally had a line in his Xmen film where Scott talks about his mentally ill cousin in an Insane Asylum but he sensibly cut the line.

It's not dark just depressing and thats not my sort of entertainment

Darn, I replied in the other thread and didn't realise it had been locked so I'll put my reply here:

AS YOU WERE:

"Head cannon" - I know we've discussed this in the past, but there's actually a connection where Spike tells Buffy in the episode DMP "I can get money" - again, how do you think Spike is getting cash? Working in an office?
Intentional connection by the writers or accidental? Either way, it still makes sense.

Now the whole 'Arms Dealer' is stupid I agree, but Spike does explain he was just holding the eggs for someone - so a middle-man, not the head of the operation. Come to think of it - when Buffy has sex with Spike they usually seem to be on the lower level in the crypt. Suddenly Spike is at home and reading a book on the upper level....perhaps watching over some eggs? Maybe blocking Buffy and/or the Scoobies from seeing them? 😉

As for the idea that the writers are trying to show the audience that Spike is 'evil and wrong' - they'd been doing so for a number of episodes and the Spuffies weren't swayed (heck, even when he raped her in DT and the other attempted SA in SR is sometimes hand-waved away).

Riley haters will rag on this episode, but it's actually a pivotal moment for Buffy. Riley makes her realise she's amazing ("You're a hell of a woman"), and she can make it through this dark patch in her life. And here she ends things with Spike (in the darkness) and begins to move back into the light.

GONE:

I refuse to believe Xander is THAT stupid when he went to Spike's crypt. He's in bed, clearly moving in a suggestive manner, can hear a woman moaning. How many other women does he know who are invisible? The wiggling ear, the moans, Spike swatting at a person - truly awful writing.

How embarrassing for James to have to act that out.

Also ridiculous trying to make out that Doris is the bad guy. She shows up to a home where the person being interviewed has forgotten. There's weird people hanging about in the house, what looks to be drugs right out on the table (though Buffy's desperate explanation of, "It's magic weed!" does make me chuckle). She's unemployed and her sister is doing poorly in school.

If Doris ignored all this, she wouldn't be doing her job.

So Entropy and Seeing Red

I like Entropy, it's actually not a bad episode and the characters all operate from understandable motivations regardless of right or wrong though Anya trying to get his friends to get Xander killed is kind of chilling.

All in all a decent enough episode

Seeing Red though I loath this episode.... the whole Attempted Rape scene is awful and thats not what I watch or like for my entertainment. For the Buffy show with Buffy herself it really shouldn't have been made.

Now I know the reason for it. Joss was frustrated that people were sympathetic to Spike and wanted to remind the audience that Spike was evil. This should not have been it. It really did ruin Spike for a lot of people.

I cant speak for anyone else but the main attraction for Spuffy was the Han Solo/Princess Leia esq chemistry. That shoots all over that.

Also Its kind of surreal that they have this serious subject matter round the juvenile Warren sub plot of him getting a pair of magical balls that Buffy has to crush. Those subjects really don't mesh.

1 First the set up, Buffy damaged her back going though a grave stone and suddenly she's weak even though every single time before she's fine.

2 Having an Ad break in the middle of your Attempted Rape scene 😐

3 Buffy is standing in front of the door after it. So does she simply step aside and let Spike go or what ??? The writers never bother to show how Spike gets out of there

4 Xander pushing into the bathroom without permission

Then you've got Tara's death and putting her in the credits in this episode just to kill her off.... Again a bad move imo
All in all a terrible episode with consequences that the writers were themselves unable to handle. Literally a couple of episodes later Buffy takes her sister to be looked after by her Attempted rapist like wtf

So Iv seen Villains/Two to Go and Grave and its a huge return to form for Buffy after some of the previous depressing episodes. I really wish Dark Willow had happened earlier in the season.
Villains I love that iconic line and moment "Bored now" by Willow
If I had 1 issue its wtf is Buffy doing taking a person to the creature who'd just attempted to rape her for protection 😳 thats just nuts.
Two to Go Again great stuff and the stunt with the Truck and Giles awesome entrance "Id like to test that theory" 😀
Grave, I enjoyed it and the Xander/Willow scene though Buffy herself is basically a side character in her own Season finale.
The nerds made me laugh for once in this "Mexico huh"
Plus you have the huge cliff hanger ending

Buffy is a side character for the last two finales. Both "bads" were defeated by someone else, and despite her in S7, rather than because of her. It's a huge flaw with the last two seasons that neither season is actually about Buffy; Willow and Spike in S6 and Spike in S7.

I haven't got to Chosen yet but we will get there when we do
Well Willow and Xander for S6 but yeah pretty much
Post automatically merged:

My favourite episodes for the season are Once More With Feeling and Villains and Two to Go .
Dark Willow should've happened earlier in the season

Spike's role in S6 is far greater than Xander's. Yes, without Xander, the world would have been destroyed, but Spike is much more of a focal character than anyone but Willow.
Just watched Lessons and the line
"She wished he was a frog and you turned him into a Frenchman" just makes me 😂

Watched Beneath You and the episode is actually pretty good but its all about that final church scene. Its just so well shot. Sarah Michelle Gellar and James Marsters bring there A Game for this, was maybe to well done as the next episide (that scene had been rescripted and reshot) while really good is maybe to good given the next episode we get lines about Smelly Spike which don't gel well

Same Time Same Place is also really well done and Gnarll was an excellent Demon literally peeling strips of skin off Willow to eat was creepy. Less is more anqd so we as an audience weren't just seeing a guy in rubber costume.
Also Spike's line about The Slayer and her boy and Xanders outrage over it always makes me chuckle.
If I had 1 issue it was more that Willows issues were about whether her friends still liked her and not what she'd done.

Id forgotten how good these early season 7 episodes are actually. A lot of wasted potential no pun intended 😄

Joan the Vampire Slayer

They are good episodes!
@Joan the Vampire Slayer @NotASlayer @silvermoon
So Iv seen Help, Selfless and Him

Help I like more on the rewatch even if the plot is basically ripping of Reptile Boy. What makes Help work is the actress Azura Skye as Cassie. She's really good in the role and makes the episode. This episode does have 1 dumb moment where its trying to convince the audience that Michelle Tractenberg was a geeky ugly teen such as when the guy pretends to ask her out. I mean common people. In real life he'd be begging to ask her out.

Selfless both when I saw this and now I feel the same. One of my favourite episodes. Pretty much the only episode on the show that takes Anyas past serious. Lots of people go on about Spike yet are silent on Anya yet her body count was larger and more vicious and given she had a soul even worse that she felt no remorse over it. This episode changes that and if I only had 1 wish, I wish she'd died at the end of this episode. That wouldve been the way to go. Seriously nothing she does for the rest of the season is remotely needed and could easily be switched around to others.

Him Really weak episode that tries and fails to copy Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered (sadly no Buffy rat) it even does a flash back moment of that episode. Not smart imo. Plus its still going with Dawn as the geeky outsider at school etc. Sorry it just doesn't work with Michelle Tractenberg. The young men should be interested in her. In fact it would've made sense for RJ to use the jacket to get her to notice him !
However It does have 1 stand out scene and that is the Principal Wood Rocket Launcher scene. That is just hilarious

OK Conversations is next

@NoShip @hoponlilmama @thetopher @NotASlayer
So I saw Conversations with Dead People.
Just for clarification as there are a separate stories in the episode. Whedon did the Buffy/Holden story. Marti Noxon the Willow/Cassie story and Drew Goddard the Trio story and Jane Espenson the Dawn story.
Now Iv always loved the Buffy/Holden scenes. Buffy having a conversation with a Vampire psychologist who she knows from school and who she also knows she's going to kill is brilliant.
The Trio scenes are also hilarious/creepy and tragic at the same time
Andrew "That boy is our last hope"
First Warren "No there is another"
Andrew "really? Who ?"
First Warren "I was doing a thing, no he really is our last hope" 😂😂
On rewatch I appreciate the other 2 more. The Willow one was tough because it was meant to be Tara but Amber Benson didn't come back but the actress who plays Cassie does a good job and the writing makes it work. Ditto the Dawn scenes with Michelle Tractenberg. There the issue was that it was meant to be First Joyce but the actress made it seem like real Joyce which I remember caused a lot of confusion at the time.

All in all a great episode arguably a top 10 contender and possibly best of the season (I still prefer Selfless) , its just a shame we never got the Xander scene with him and First Jesse now that would've been good

hoponlilmama
hoponlilmama
It's a great episode. One of the highlights from s7.
So Sleeper and Never Leave Me
Sleeper drags a bit in the middle but still watchable.
James Marsters and Sarah Michelle Gellar are great
though it ends on a real cliff hanger.
I really like Never Leave Me, its writer Drew Goddard was new to Buffy in this season and he was the stand out, while some of the others were getting stale he was fresh and writing the best episodes this season.
This episode actually has a grown up conversation between Buffy and Spike over there relationship.
Also Andrew made me laugh
"That'll do Pig" 😂😂
"You'll get nothing out of me Carpenter" 😂😂
Great episode that ends with a literal bang 🤓🧐
OK Him aside the first 9 episodes were actually pretty good....
Then Bring on the Night airs and my God I remember decades ago when I first watched it I thought a group of individuals walk into Buffys house and they suck the life out of the show. They are awful and 2 of them have the worst British accents ever. 23 years later on rewatch and I feel exactly the same about this group of individuals 🧐
