"Buffy Season 9" and "Angel & Faith"

I don't mind Faith going over to Angel's series, but I don't see why she needs to have her name on the title of the comic. It makes it look like she will be more important than Angels regular supporting cast.

I just hope she doesn't overshadow the Angel characters: Gunn. Illyria, Connor, etc.

I really like Faith and I'm glad she's with Angel. But I can't stand her name in the title. After five seasons of AtS and years of comics, why on earth Angel has to become a co-protagonist? I feel they're trying to diminish him... before s8 and its terrible portray of the character, then Joss statement he couldn't/can't know how to write Angel and now this title ... too sad.😡
 
I agree, Angel has had his own title, both on TV and in the comics for 5 Seasons, one "After The Fall," and one "Aftermath" but apparently, at least in the beginning, he's not going to be in any sort of condition to be the central character of the series. Almost certainly, a few issues into the season, he will recover enough to be on his own once more, then the two characters will separate, either each having their own title, or teaming up with someone else. Probably, Angel will get his crew back together,or what passes for his crew now, and Faith will get a team of her own, maybe Satsu and a couple of younger Slayers.

The same thing might happen with Buffy and Spike. At some point, he will need to take his ship off on some mission that Buffy either can't or doesn't want to join, at which time he will pair up with someone else and Buffy will pick up a new partner, at least for a few issues. Remember, this is supposed to be a 24 month series, with a lot of short arcs and pair ups, resulting in as many, if not more, issues than Buffy and Angel had combined in their respective 40 and 42 issue runs.

At least that's the impression that I've gotten from what I've read.
 
Faith and Angel are good together. They both have struggled with their dark sides, so they're able to relate to each other. They make a great team, IMO. 🙂 Maybe Fangel's about to become cannon....

Have no doubts on that account. Angel will not only be redeemed in Season 9, it will become quite clear, probably within the first 3 or 4 issues, that he was in no way responsible for anything that he did as Twilight, just as he has never been responsible for anything that he did as Angelus.

I've seen it posited around that it is a sales move. Angel comics don't sell as well as Buffy comics so they add a popular character to the title to get attention.

As much a cop-out that would be, it is probably the only way anyone would even want to read this title.

I will seriously never forgive Whedon for what he's done to Angel. If the plot actually made any sense at all I might not be upset, but even the most hardcore Angel haters had to have been left scratching their heads in season 8.

Maybe I'm the only one who feels this way, but I saw Season 8 as the natural progression of Angel's attitude that he has the right to dictate and interfere in the lives of others without either consultation or even warning. From taking away a day of happiness and hope from Buffy in Season 1 "I Will Remember You" to endangering and sending to hell every living thing in Los Angeles, to deciding that he has the right or authority to make a decision that literally put the entire universe at risk, his actions would seem to indicate that he thinks that he's some king of god, with infinite power and no responsibility for his actions. If what happened at the end of Season 8 brings him, finally, to the realization that "helping the hopeless" doesn't give him free rein to interfere where he is neither needed nor wanted. Angel was a hero in Sunnydale, but it's almost like, the longer he stays away from Buffy and her influence, the more irresponsible he becomes.

Hopefully, Faith can whip him back into shape.

Your right. Angel got screwed in season 8. Sometimes Joss has no idea what he's doing, the best thing to do is to bring back some of the writers from Buffy and Angel back to keep Joss in check...

I'm honestly not expecting Angel & Faith to be good. I read After The Fall and it was pretty good. Its too bad they can't get those writers back.

The first few arcs of season 8 were good. The last one I remember enjoying was the one where they defeated the vampires in Tokyo. Other than that, I consider the Buffy comics badly written fanfiction.
 
Im more worried about Illryia and other smaller Angel characters. I hope they find a way to merge them into the Buffyverse.

Angel was always responsible for his actions as Angelus, just as Spike was responsible for his pre-soul actions. And since Angel made the decision to assume the Twilight persona, regardless of whether he knew or not what would happen, he was responsible.

I agree . . . but with one point. I also saw Season 8 as a natural progression of some of his personality traits. But . . . I don't see the need for Angel to always hang around Buffy in order to keep himself from being more irresponsible. If he cannot control his more unpleasant aspects of his nature without Buffy, then he cannot be capable of developing on his own. Spike had some help from Buffy, but has managed to remain on his new path without Buffy's help.

Angel had shown himself quite capable without Buffy for five years and more (see five seasons of AtS and AtF and other comics) before Joss decided differently.

I think Scott Allie was the bigger problem than Joss. I don't think he had even watched much of ATS, and didn't get Angel's character at all.

I've had this discussion with WA before so I won't get into it again, but suffice it to say that I understand some of his points, and do see some of those character defects rooted in his behavior in ATS, but it was taken to such a grand extent that it reads unbelievable (mass killings of slayers? wholesale, world-wide deception? all to be with Buffy, when many other times he sacrificed being with Buffy for the greater good?).

In Buffy season 8, Angel is alone. He doesn't do well alone. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Angel is a character that absolutely needs his friends, his family. Alone he's eating rats. That is the big problem with Angel in season 8, and something that I hope gets rectified in season 9. Having him with Faith is a start, but he really needs some other ATS/AI members to ground him. I'm cautiously optimistic about what they do with him in season 9.
