Have you ever noticed that B does her best fighting when she is alone? Take Anne, the first ep of season three for example. After living on her own for some time - disconnected from friends and family, Buff does major slayage. Admit it. The moves she did there were killer.
Not too many episodes later, Faith was introduced. Being a slayer, Faith was prime for Buffy companionship in slaying. But as you had probably seen, Buffy seemed to not fight so well with Faith than as she did alone.
Then, in the later seasons, Buffy starts to patrol with Riley and eventually Spike. While fighting baddies with her mates, Buffy's skills seem to decline. She winds up needing the extra help from her partners whereas she otherwise wouldn't have.
In the episode Riley leaves, Buffy pulls off some killer kills. She brings down a whole lot of vampires in less than a minute. (Think back to Anne) Note that this of course would have been a very sad and lonely time for her because of her boyfriend leaving. (Emphasis on the word "lonely")
Skip ahead to season seven. This is when it seems most apparent. With the Potential Slayers, Spike, Faith, Wood, and of course the Scoobies, Buff is truly part of an army. But notice that her Slayer strength seems minimal in this season. When first introduced with an Ubervamp, Buffy is pummeled. But by Chosen, non-Slayers can take them on with ease.
Maybe Buffy is too concerned for her friend's survival to give it her all during fighting. Maybe she thinks she should give them the lead because they aren't the Slayer. Maybe she really doesn't do well with others. ("The Slayer does not walk in this world")
