As I sit here writing this, the Discovery Channel is doing a program about the fortieth annivrsary of Star Trek, and I just couldn't help but remember the early days of that show (yes, folks, I'm THAT old!), and the similarities between Star Trek and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. While I am very aware that many Buffy fans object to Buffy being compared to Captain Kirk, Spike being compared to Spock, or Angel being compared to a Parnassian Slime Slurper (oops).

The odds are that I won't be around to see Buffy's fortieth anniversary, but to you who will, I hope you will be able to look back with fondness at the way "your" immortal show began, and the wonderful talented people responsible for it. (and if you should happen to run across any old Trekkers still doddering around, invite them to the nearest bar and hoist a toast to absent friends.)

And as Roy Rogers would say,(yes, I'm THAT old, too!) "Happy trails."

P.S.--PLEASE don't tell me that you don't remember who Roy Rogers was.

I absolutely loathe Star Trek, but I appreciate your sentiments and would gladly share a drink with you.

I have no idea what a Parnassian Slime Slurper is but I will take your word that Angel shares similarities with one. 🙂

Bless you for making me feel not the oldest active BB member...I'd be happy to drink with you as well...sounds like we've got the makings of an old fart party 🙂

There seem to be quite a few Buffy fans who share your sentiments about the STAR TREK franchise, but there's no arguing that that one show, neither understood nor apreciated in its initial run, led to a lot of spinoffs, both on the little and big screens (as did HIGHLANDER, now that I think of it), and it is my great hope that BUFFY follows in that tradition.

For those who might be interested---A Parnassian Slime Slurper is a most unpleasent creature who tends to fixate on a beautiful young girl, usually blond, and tries to convince both the girl and himself that they are starcrossed lovers, bound together by fate but kept apart by tragic circumstances, cursed to long to be together but never allowed to be. Usually it ends up brooding itself to death when the girl's REAL love and soul mate arrives on the scene, manages to save the world from destruction, perhaps at the very cost of his own life (of course, the true love is resurrected and reunited with the girl in the end, which only compounds the Slime Slurper's brooding.) thereby earning not only the girl's eternal love and devotion, but also a complete set of all six seasons of HIGHLANDER which he never gets to watch, because the blond never lets him get out of bed. And they shag happily ever after.

That's a Parnassian Slime Slurper. Filthy beast.
