Buffy: The Next Generation

I was reading one of White Avenger's post in the season 8 forum and he mentioned something about Buffy: The Next Generation. My question is, would anybody be happy with a Buffy the Vampire Slayer show or movie with an entirely new cast playing the characters? I would find it interesting and would definitely watch. It woudn't necessarily be bad because you see the types of fictional characters like Superman having several interpretations and TV shows. It might even make the franchise grow a little bit and bring in a bigger fanbase. What is everybody's opinion on this?

I think it would be definitely strange and I don't know whether it would work more if the new actors tried to act as the originals did for the characters, or it'd be better to bring their new edge to it. I mean it would be a bit weird if like any of the scooby gang, particuarly Willow I think for some reasons as she was such a delicate character acting and development wise, were potrayed completely differently from what they were originally.
On the other hand it would give the show and entirely look and, as visonguy said, it would have the potential to bring in a whole new and therefore wider audience. Buffy Fans: The Next Generation. haha
Personally though, unless the (hypothetical) new cast was excellent beyond belief, I would still always prefer the originals. They were all forever been seen as those characters or rather the charactes forever seen as them, if you get me.

Since the activation of the slayers, I think it entirely plausible to have a new team of slayers led by a new watcher (Andrew or Dawn, perhaps?), but only if some of the same immortal or demon sort of folks show up every once in awhile and only if we have at least minimal interaction with some of the senior Buffyverse characters (kind of like the crossovers they did on Angel every once in awhile).

Another interesting twist would be if the activation spell activated male slayers, too, and that maybe that would explain what Connor is. I don't know. I'm just typing as I think, here. I think we could definitely deal with a new slayer and a new team if they involved some popular minor characters like Dru, Harmony, Gwen, Illyria, Groo, etc. to complement the new faces.

Personally I would HATE to see anyone else play these characters. I really would have a problem with someone in however many years time taking this show and ruining it because I really don't see it being bettered. The thought of anyone but Joss having a say in what goes gives me the heebie geebies!! Especially when you look at remakes that are being done now! I mean 'Dukes of Hazard'..imagine a Jessica Simpson type as Buffy!!! Jesus Christ thats scary!!!

My previous allusion to the possibility of a "Next Generation" Buffy as compared (obviously) to Star Trek was merely the hope that the saga would continue, without necessarily being limited to the original stars. It worked for Star Trek and it could certainly work for Buffy. A new show doesn't have to be identical to be as good, or even (don't hang me for blasphemy!) better. Buffy and Faith don't have to be the only Slayers we can love...

Also, remember the different franchises that have continued and even improved beyond the original version: Tarzan, James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Superman, and Zorro, to name just a few. I can remember debates about how James Bond would never survive without Sean Connery, Tarzan would disappear without Weissmuller, Bela Lugosi could never be replaced as Dracula, and there could never be another Sherlock after Rathbone. There COULD be another Buffy. Maybe not by that name, but tha possibility of another Slayer is certainly viable.

I think it is plausible to consider a series revolving around a different slayer, watcher and scoobies; a whole different dynamic. As that could give us a different view on things. I mean one of the writers (Actually I'm not sure whether it was Jane Espenson or Marti Noxon...) said they wouldn't be surprised if they found themselves writing in a couple of years the series 'Slayer: 2010' because the Buffyverse created such a wide world that there is literally an entire universe of characters that they could choose to write about. But I think loyalties would always stay with Buffy, Giles, the Scoobies and Sunnydale but that's not to say 'Karla, Robert, the Slayerettes and...I don't know Manchester' wouldn't be enjoyed in an entirely different way whilst allowing the Buffyverse to live on. (okay, so I came up with those names and places on the spot- so sue me)

I would definitely prefer new characters in the same universe, with some mention of what happened in the original show. Anthony Stewart Head could pop in for an episode, because you saw in S8.05 "The Chain" that he is now a semi-famous traveling watcher that gives the big talk to new slayers.

If they were going to revisit Buffy, I think it would be better as a cartoon. I wish they'd release the scripts of the animated Buffy show that never happened.

Ok cartoons I would be interested in, especially considering how far grapics have come, and I wouldn't be opposed to new characters in the verse, its THESE characters being re-done that I would take issue with. It would just seem wrong.

and the High School lunch thing, I guess I'm lucky we had to bring our own lunch! between spagetti turning into snakes and dinner ladies adding rat poison to the food, it seems we were far safer!!

If we are talking with real human actors then no, I need the originals. If it was just a cartoon I guess I don't mind subsitute voices but naturally I prefer the originals there too.

I'd rather they re-interpret the franchise by making an all-new "XXX the Vampire Slayer"; going the "Star Trek" (milky)-way.
