That rape scene was necessary for us to realize that Spike was still evil. He didn't have a soul, he was still an evil vampire. The chip didn't make him good, and when It stopped working on Buffy we see how the chip just prevented his evilness. People were starting to see Spike as good, even without his soul. Joss knew that everyone was starting to like Spike more than he wanted. He had to bring us back to reality w/ that scene.

they were very graphic and i really didn't like them. i especially didn't like the balcony one in the bronze. sarah said she hated that scene too, because it wasn't like Buffy. but they were showing us how buffy is depressed and she made a bad choice. she couldn't feel and she used spike to make her feel. and i felt so bad for spike because he really truly loved her, and wasn't using her at all. but i think s6 was very good, showing how life isn't perfect, there's bills to pay, people to take care of, growing up. but i do agree they really did not need to show all of those scenes to the extent that they did.
