Everyone knows that Buffy Summers was a tough and resourceful teen, but what was she like as a child? Slayer fans finally get an answer in Kim Smith’s latest picture book, which features an eight-year-old Buffy confronting her fear of the dark. She’s joined by Willow and Xander as they “investigate strange sounds coming from the closet, seek advice from their school librarian Giles, and encounter everyone’s favorite Buffyverse monsters.”

The fifth book in Smith’s Pop Classics series—we loved her X-Files one last year—boasts the most adorable version of Joss Whedon’s Sunnydale we’ve ever seen. We’re excited to share illustrations from the book below, which take place during a sleepover at Buffy’s house and in the school library the following morning.

Smith’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer is geared toward readers ages four to eight, but adults will also be captivated by the story (and its surprise ending). It’s available now from Quirk Books.

First piccy: And at the end of the night mom tucked us into our beds and turned off the light. Idiot writer; at the end of the night is morning!
It looks really cute! Good likeness on Joyce too. I wish the illustrations were better though, to me these look kind of cheap… picturebooks doesn't have to mean low quality or flatness! But the colors are great. If I had a kid I'd consider getting it. 🙂

I'm a bit terrified at how muched I laugh at the Adam line!
There are some nice easter eggs in those illustrations, and some so subtle that I wonder how many I'm missing.

At age 8, Buffy was alone when she saw her cousin Celia die in a hospital in "Killed by Death". It would be nice to know if this series was pre- Der Kinderstod or later.

This book is responsible for my almost-3-year-old telling me yesterday, “I wanna be a slayer like Buffy.” It was so cute, so 10/10, perfect, would recommend. 🙂

Giles looks even creepier with younger characters. I wonder if he also hangs out in public bathrooms at night...?

Oh, didn't you know, in another life he is George Michael.
