Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series nearing pilot order at Hulu, SMG returning!

I’ll reserve any excitement until I see something like the pilot or a trailer

This franchise has played with my excitement since the ”Buffy lives” announcement before s6, and through the final two seasons and subsequent comic books, even novel-tie ins like Queen of the Slayers, and the new Willow books, it has consistently killed my love by producing hotter and hotter garbage

I’m more enthralled with the idea of a show about a new Slayer or Slayers, with SMG being involved off screen, rather than seeing her as Buffy again, to be honest.

After the comics I mostly dread what they’ll come up with for her character

@NotASlayer Cordelia is in it no? I’m not getting Audible for Cordy and Spike 😉

I’m just not particularly interested in seeing any of old the characters again. I think I’d prefer all new cast and characters.

Have you listened to Slayers? It's not bad. It's not great - I'd rank it below seasons 1-5 probably - but it's not bad.
That does neatly get around the whole age thing and with relation to Spike even the most ardent of Spuffy fans are unlikely to romanticise his behaviour towards Buffy if he looks like this all the time:

1x10_006.jpg
Yeah, but at least his nails are immaculate!

@Taake Cordy and Spike weren't in a relationship in it, though there were hints of such for the future if another season was made. Mind you, there were hints of Anya and Tara for the future as well. The only actual relationship was Dru and Tara.

@thenewbuzwuzz Possibly not as something to lust after though. Abusive behaviour is less romanticised when the abuser isn't pretty.

Yeah, but at least his nails are immaculate!

True. Maybe he can share the name of whoever does his manicures?

I do wonder where they would start a new series from. After season seven? Or after season five? I know that season seven might be considered more logical, but I personally think it would be better if they acted as if the last two seasons hadn't happened. Neither was a season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and neither was a season about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I'm gonna guess they won't consider the comics canon - and for those Spuffies who pushed hard that they were are likely in for a surprise.

And then there is the question as to whether they will have any of the other cast involved. Going by Slayers, quite a few of the originals would be willing to participate (and if you ignores S6&7 you don't need AU versions of some of them), but anyone who is a vampire is going to look distinctly odd for a changeless being - that I read is why the Annointed One got killed off, because he was ageing - and if you have JM there will be a vocal minority wanting more of the toxic and abusive relationship from hell.

I guess committing to an audio-book is different from a potential television series.
There's a lot to factor in here - is the series focused around Buffy? If it is, you're likely going to want to call in on other characters from the original series, not just in cameo appearances.

NB you can basically exclude, Alyson might be on board, as might ASH. Eliza is retired from acting. We may need to have an AU if we want to see Cordy and Anya. I'd love to see Oz and Riley back.

The biggest hurdle here is Angel and Spike - first off, the actors have aged and can't play immortal beings (please God, no poor excuses like, 'drinking animal blood has aged them'). And second, my concern is if they somehow work out a way to bring them on the show, the focus is going to be another shipping war, and I don't want the series (original or new) reduced to, "Oooh, who does Buffy pick!?"

If SMG is more of a guest role, there might not be such a push to have cast members from the original series to appear.

As others have said, I'm not fully invested in this until they're either shooting on set, or there's a trailer.

Yes, I think few outside Spuffies really considered them canon.

Slayers brought back a lot of characters via an AU, but if you just dump seasons 6 & 7 you get around that issue.

Yes; that is my concern over bringing back Angel and Spike. Ruining their characters, Buffy and the series by making it all about which vampire Buffy ends up with. Rather than Slays, as it says in her job description.

They do, and enjoy pointing out that they were in a relationship (which apparently ended because they realised they have nothing in common outside of fighting evil) and Spike "won".

SMG and a few others would probably like to forget those two seasons, but I don't think they'd bypass them. We'll just have to put you in charge and you can scrub s6 & 7 out! 😉

Indeed. Well, they'd already partially ruined Spike on the series from s5..

Where do you think Spuffys like the comics. Iv seen many hate them too. Especially Season 12 which broke them up off screen and basically did a Chosen reset.

There's the whole CGI De Aging but it's more likely would be short member Berry cameos (not least as DB has his own TV Seal show)
Buffy herself is not the main character but reoccurring so it's not about her.
Tbh she's the real pull in for fans, as its new Buffy but the trick will be how they handle the new characters or whether the stories will be any good

My main focus is the writers and writing. Hell even if it had been Joss I'd have been concerned given how bad Dollhouse and the Nevers were

Not all, of course.
(EDIT: Apologies, you were writing to NAS and I responded!)

I don't follow the comics myself. For me, the series ended in 2003.

CGI a possibility if they have the budget - and the skills. Or we'll end up with another Superman/Henry Cavill moustache fiasco.

Of course it's always down to good writing. You could bring back the entire cast, give the series a big budget, but without good writing, the series will tank.

As did I. I meant s5 on BTVS, and the beginnings of him "falling in love" with Buffy signalled the ruining of his character.

I don’t care of they’re in a relationship or not. But Cordelia is just an immediate no from me just as a character

Had no idea there was even a Cordy-Spike thing, that is kinda madness!

Given how different everything is, it is not that hard to consider 6&7 an AU about different people in a different Sunnydale!

Sadly, yes. On the whole, I was not opposed to the idea of Spike remaining around as long as there was a good reason for it. Instead, we had someone who really should have been staked multiple times or at the very least run out of town being allowed to remain without consequences for no in-universe reason.

I have never followed the comics and have no interest in them. This is based on general commentary I've read which seems to point that way.

Nothing in development for DB listed on IMDb at the moment.

The most successful de-aging I have seen so far has been in Captain Marvel. Which is, just like Buffy, a Disney property. So, I am cautiously optimistic if they try it.

Nor me. I thought they were awful. The whole Angel is Twilight, murders Buffys girls, she has sex in Space with him and then in effect abandoned those girls (though she slept with a student first) to work in a coffee shop in San Francisco was truly awful. Plus the Artwork was terrible and showed that Joss Whedon needed a filter and someone to help with continuity and consistency.

Hell I thought the last 2 seasons of the show were bad writing (albiet different reasons) and the show should've ended with Buffys death in Season 5

I can assure you regards the comics that's not the case. For Season 11 maybe but that was it and like I said for Season 12 that's no no

It won't happen but a story of Buffy whose in her 40s still simping over 2 Vampires in bodies that are mid 20s is actually kind of sad that she's not moved on

I agree, although it would have been nice to have a way for Buffy to survive but somehow retire from Slayerhood. Maybe the portal and impact drains the Slayer out of her, and she survives as a normal human?

It was just with multiple comments about the comic books being written mostly for Spuffies. Or maybe that is the Boom comics? Having no interest, I have not looked into it.

Buffy's vampire relationships are those relationships you have when you are young and stupid that you hopefully grow out of. Though in Spike's case, it was the sort of relationship that usually ends up in the news following at least one death.

At that point it might have been best to have had a fresh break from both relationships since both feel like something of the past era.

I created a thread last year (I think) asking the good people here about whether ending BTVS at S5 would've been something they accepted, and found it a fitting ending.

I'm in camp 'yes'. I don't hate s6 & 7, but I think s5 was the series hitting its peak, and The Gift whilst sad, was still in a sense a beautiful ending.

Wow! I certainly didn't expect this news. Obviously I loved Buffy but I don't feel particularly excited about this reboot either to tell you the truth. I don't know if it's because SMG will only be guest starring or if it's because I doubt this will be successful. I mean I was super excited about the Cruel Intentions reboot and the pilot wasn't even picked up. 🙁
So maybe I am waiting to get excited until I know that the pilot will be picked up and that we'll get at least one season.

Also does this mean that SMG's other new show has already tanked?

I don't know who else they will invite back. I guess for the show to work with a new slayer without having killed off Faith you have to pick up from the end of season seven when every girl who was being called to become a slayer got her powers.

But that episode changed the entire premise as there used to be only one slayer in the whole world. Now there could be several.

But after season seven that means Tara is dead and Anya is dead. Not that many people stays dead in the buffyverse. It's possible to reverse pretty much any death as it's plausible within the genre.

If Buffy should end up with either Angel or Spike the only way they can make that work is to make that vampire human. Yet I am not sure I think she should end up with either one of them. I think that Buffy should be over her romances with the vampires by now. I used to think Buffy and Angel was so romantic when I was in my late teens/early 20s. Now I am wondering what the hell I was thinking. A man who is 200 + years old and a monster gets with a 17 year old girl. How could I ever think that was romantic? 😵

Maybe it was SMG & DB's remarkable chemistry that sold me on it. I actually wouldn't mind seeing them working together on a project again. Like playing a couple in another tv-series or movie. Not sure I am so sold on Buffy & Angel anymore though.

Yes Angel treated her a bit better than Spike did when he wasn't Angelus. Yet both Bangel and Spuffy were abusive relationships IMHO. Maybe they mirror the sick part of Whedon's mind where teenage girls are being punished for having sex?

I am actually glad Whedon won't be involved with this. I used to admire him. Now when I know how toxic he was to the female cast and especially how cruel he was to Charisma when she was pregnant I have lost all respect for him. So I am glad SMG gets to be in control of this project. 🙂

I guess time will tell if it will become successful or not.

I do wonder if S5-7 Spike's treatment of Buffy was a hint of what would be revealed about JW.

I don't think Joss was ever going to be involved in this one. His names pretty much mud right now, and if there's one project he 100% wouldn't be invited to its this one.
Thought I'd pop back in when I saw this news trending. Heard it all before but with SMG involved this is the closest to something concrete actually happening.

It's something I thought I'd be really happy about but I'm feeling more like it should be left alone. A televised season 8 years ago would have been amazing for me but now I quite like having it in a bubble. Buffy was of it's time but I can still rewatch and it feels current, best of both worlds. Plus the ending leaves possibilities, we can all imagine the gang having a great life.

That said this still could be decent. Cobra Kai provides a loose blue print of how you can make a decent sequal / soft reboot.

Think anyone worrying about who's coming back is wasting their time / will be disappointed. This won't be Buffy Season 8 or Buffy Season 13. This will be a new set of characters and they'll be the focus. Sarah and other potential cameos will give it credibility but they're not going to be the focus.

I'd also wager heavily that the original series will be considered the baseline canon and the comics will either be ignored or directly contradicted. There's no way they will randomly pick up after Season 5 and ignore 6 and 7.

Yeah Cobra Kai is one of the better examples of a nostalgia sequel

My prediction is that with SMG on board the first couple of episodes will do really well as it will be marketed as a Buffy Sequel and people will be curious to check that out. I mean The Force Awakens did very well as the Starwars Sequel even though essentially it was just a reboot marketed as one (JJ Abrams is such a hack)
It will then depend on what happens next. Remember Buffys just a reoccurring character so she won't be the main focus (even though the audience interest will be about her)
If the characters/show is bland then I can see it relying on Member Berry cameos for old characters guest apparences.

@NotASlayer Joss actually was not a Spike fan (nor Angel either) he just recognised they were popular and used that. He took shots at Spuffy all the time. It was he for example who had Spike have sex with Harmony in Angel Season 5 which even David Fury didn't agree with (he once compared Spike fams to serial killer lovers) and who put in the Balcony scene in Dead Things.

It was more semi-idle wondering if Joss had accidentally let some of his real feelings bleed through into Spike.
This was on the radio news at lunchtime as Mrs P and I were coming back from a dentist appointment. Cheered me up after finding out I had a filling that needed re-doing 🦷. If it made Greatest Hits radio news here in the UK I reckon it might be a goer 😉

Ah, appreciate the info! And even without his involvement in this current project, they'll likely ignore the comics. Just like I imagine they'll ignore the recent Slayers audio-series.
Strangely, my only concern is the format of episode. I love 22 episodes of 40 minutes per season. I know I belong to the old school but series nowadays with 7-10 episodes of 1hour30 the episode.. It just gets on my nerves and sometimes it’s because of that I don’t even finish the series.

Everyone talks about Whedon but I wonder if any of the other writers will be involved ?
Petrie and Espenson are known side kicks and went with him to work on the Nevers. Without Whedon will they work on this ?

The one highlight of Season 7 was Drew Goddard and will he be back ?
