This will feel really weird if it happens. But I would love to see Faith again if that were a possibility.

Iv no doubt that if its successful Eliza Dushku will get an offer to do a guest appearance. If only for member berries if nothing else.
Only Xander of all the characters will probably be excluded for obvious reasons.
I will be curious if Alyson Hannigan makes an appearance, simply due to her ties to Joss and this shows desire to exclude him

I am less than certain that Eliza will make an appearance. She did marry a billionaire, after all.

I will be curious if Alyson Hannigan makes an appearance,

And would Wesley return with her?

I am less than certain that Eliza will make an appearance

Yeah I'm not certain she will, and I'm still thinking about how she wasn't invited to the 20th reunion thing even though that was almost a decade ago 😂

Eliza Dushku was tight with Whedon too no? She brought him in when she needed a show (Dollhouse).

Not sure either would decline an interesting role (if it is interesting to them) for him though

Either way, hopefully we wont have to see the Scoobies 30 years on. Just focus on new, interesting characters rather than a who’s who of cameos

Although he has no role, surely he must be guaranteed a cut of the profits if for no other reason his ownership of the characters 🤔

That's because it was the time Whedon's then wife leaked information about the affairs and Eliza was one of the main people. The other 2 were AH (they couldn't not disinvite her) and Amy Acker (who didn't need to be invited)

For those Trekkies on here Let's just hope SMG is not the William Shatner of this
For those non Trekkies. William Shatner played Kirk on Star Trek and For Star Trek 5 he got to Write and Direct it (basically he was unhappy that Lenard Nimoy Directed the last 2 and wanted to do one too) . It was a disaster with fellow cast members thinking he purposely made there characters look bad to big his up. Anyway it almost sunk the franchise at the time

I don't think the rumours have ever been confirmed to be fair.
I love y'all but come on! Don't be such downers. This is so exciting! This is the first time Buffy has come back WITH Sarah involved. And I think that's a really important distinction from all the other times...

I think this has the potential (get it?) to rock. And the world needs a Slayer now more than ever!!!

I think it's OK for people to have legitimate concerns that this series will tank.
Forgive me as I haven't read through all the responses yet, so I don't really know how legit this is - but I know better than to get excited about a possible Buffy reboot at this point. I'll believe it when I see it.

And as I've expressed before, I'm not interested in a remake at all - maybe a reboot, set in the present or past with new Slayers and new characters would be cool, but not a remake.

Of course, something like what Lynch did with Twin Peaks would be amazing - that is, rebooting the show, set in real time with the same actors, but of course that wouldn't' work because so many of them are vampires, which of course, shouldn't be able to age.

And would Wesley return with her?
I thought Wes died in Not Fade Away? I guess resurection?

I think a reboot (a la BSG) would be excellent. From the articles, that is exactly what is happening with SMG in the wise mentor role?

From my understanding, the only way SMG would be involved was if Whedon wasn't. So we will find out if Whedon was really the genius showrunner who captured lightning in a bottle or it was all hype all along.

I think that the reality today is that BTVS has become a universal story that writers and showrunners internalized years ago and we are in for an awesome ride.

I was just coming here to post this! This actually may happen! They made her executive producer! The feelings I have right now are infinite!!

Even if she serves in a mentor capacity to another slayer, I’m totally down for it! Just getting another forray into the series would be absolutely perfect.

I feel like this is the right way to go with a series. We don’t necessarily need all of the old characters because we saw their art happen. It would be nice to get a drop in from time to time. But slayers the next generation is exactly what we need!!
I admire your optimism and I do hope it is good, but is Hulu not owned or a part of Disney? If so I wouldn't crack open a bottle of champagne yet.

I do think that a remake could be good, as the idea of Buffy is a really strong one, lot's of amazing characters, stories, lore, monsters to play around with and it would be interesting see it in a modern environment.

However in the current climate? Jesus Christ no. I have 0 faith again in those parasites at Disney doing anything interesting with it.

The fact that this is a direct sequel also depresses me too. This gives these parasites a chance to actually mess up the story of the original which, all things considered had a really good ending. Also how are you going to bring Spike and Angel back? Both actors have aged well, but they're not actual vampires. Plus Xander not to be insensitive has his problems and couldn't possibly return?

To me the best option would have been adapting Fray, which is set in the far future of the Buffyverse and therefore wouldn't need any of the cast back, other than the odd flashback, but this is the worst of all worlds.

Sigh the list of series that haven't been tainted by rubbish sequels and remakes in the 21st century is shrinking. Doctor Who, Star Trek, Star Wars, must we add Buffy to that list? Thank god Blake's 7 and Xena haven't been tampered with...... yet.

I think Spike sums up what most fans feel about reviving Buffy in the toxic, identity politics driven, tribal era of entertainment.

Strangely, my only concern is the format of episode. I love 22 episodes of 40 minutes per season. I know I belong to the old school but series nowadays with 7-10 episodes of 1hour30 the episode.. It just gets on my nerves and sometimes it’s because of that I don’t even finish the series.
That's a great point. Even if it's a shortened 10 episode season, for the love of God, please don't make it a serialized series. Bring back MOTW. Bring back slow-build background arcs. Keep away from a 10-episode story, where we don't really get an idea of who these characters are because they've been focused on one thing the entire time.

Yes and no. I mean, it's still considered a 20th Century Fox property. So while Disney controls them, it's not going to be produced by Disney (like DW, for example).

Also, the executives worked on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and that wasn't a terrible show, and was a Whedon property, so I'm sure they understand the feel the fans are looking for. I'm being optimistic. lol

I was more concerned with SMG being the Patrick Stewart of Buffy, not the William Shatner. Final Frontier is pretty bad, but it's trying to say something. That "I need my pain" speech is gold. However, the worst parts of Picard are clearly tied back to Stewart. Season 3 was exactly what he didn't want to do, and Season 1 was closest to his vision of 25th Century Brexit.

I don't really think any of the characters are coming back. Remember, Buffy is the only character who is clean, in that all you need are the television rights to make a show about her. Every other character is also co-owned by either Fox or the WB. I would like to see characters other than Buffy, but, I don't think anyone is willing to pay to get them. But I could very well be wrong.

Fox owning parts of Buffy is hardly a problem for Disney given that Disney own Fox.

More Kurtzman than Stewart. Kurtzman was pretty much done after the first 2 (awful) seasons of Picard and so let Terry Matalas run Season 3 and do what he liked. Matalas had worked previously on DS9 and Voyager and so essentially did a good bye to that verse.
I will say this Picard Season 3 was not perfect by any stretch, it was simply better than Kurtzman Trek which is a very low bar.
Since then Kurtzman had come back and with a bruised ego fired Matalas and gone back to defiling Treks corpse.
Apparently a Harry Potter esq Hogwarts in the Trek Verse is his next thing 😐
God will we never be free of him ?

Yep he did. The death scene was fantastic.

Again yes, if you have Whedon you don't have Gellar. She doesn't want anything to do with him.

Like I said before. Whedon did the comics which were god awful and he did Dollhouse and the Nevers which weren't great either. It's like he's still not manage to move on from a writing perspective either

Thanks for the link re: s8 comics. They sound awful (no offense to anyone who enjoys them!). Buffy robs a bank? Willow flies? Spike in a spaceship? LOL
To borrow someone else's term, comics are probably going to be "S-Canon," which means non-canon until someone inserts a reference into a canon work. The Marvel Star Wars comics were S Canon, the Star Trek Animated Series from the 70s was S canon. I wouldn't lose sleep over Buffy TNG having to accommodate Teenage Giles, but I could see it being a joke in an episode too

Re: Picard; I want to make this perfectly clear. Season 2 of Picard is the weirdest series of television ever made. I mean, I didn't watch it, but I tried to follow the descriptions and plot summaries, but to no avail. It's like Q became the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future.

I’m more excited at the idea of old writers returning, rather than main cast and characters

Whedon wasn’t the only witty pen behind ”Buffy speak” after all

Would I want Buffy to return? Yeah, probably.

Would I want it to return in this climate? Hell. No. Walking through the ashes of many, many other IP's that have, over the past decade, being torched by talentless writers combined with cringe progressive politics does not bode well for this going forward. I probably would've been okay with some kind of animated series like the one that was touted a long while ago but this announcement has me braced for oncoming suck.

Meh, maybe it'll be the next Cobra Kai; something coming out of a relatively fringe IP that is respectful to the fans, the character, and the world. I think that would make people happy...and relieved. And surprised.

Gellar's participation as actress and executive producer gives me a lot of hope. I am sure the people that gave us this year's Oscar nominations will want cringe progressive politics front and center, but, I think Gellar's committment to an accurate continuation will prevent the cringe. However, the series will be produced in 2025 instead of 1997, so there will be some major changes. I am curious to see how they turn out.

I wonder if we might see Oz back. Seth said he wished he'd been contacted about the Audible drama last year because he would've done it, and he's also still close to Sarah. She has done tons of uncredited voicework for him on Robot Chicken.
