When Buffy is made a vampire from her nightmare, does this grant her extra strength as a vampire and as the slayer? I'm not sure the episode covered this.

If we accept that the Slayer's powers are the result of the Shadow Men's fusing a demonic spirit with the First Slayer and all of her successors, we might also assume that that demonic element, being tied to a living Slayer, would die at the same moment that she did (I know that someone out there is saying, "Yeah, but Buffy was still super AFTER she died and was brought back to life. Twice." To that, I would assert that if the demonic spirit were indeed fused to the living Slayer, then it would be revived at the same time that she was revived) In that, the spirit would be like the soul. As long as the Slayer lives, it is there.

Now, if that is true, and, granted, it is only theory, but as such just as valid as any other theory, since there has never, within the confines of the series, been an actual case of a Slayer being turned, then the risen former Slayer would be no more powerful than any other vampire/ex-Slayer would be no more powerful than any other vampire.

That's my guess, anyhow.

Wow... Good theory! :)
She would be dead, so her power would be gone and it would go to the next slayer in line.
She would just have regular vampire strength.
I guess.

I guess.

But after she was resuscitated by Xander in Prophecy Girl, she still had her powers. Same thing happened when she was resurrected by Willow.

That said, yeah, I think she'd have Slayer strength plus vampire strength, which would explain why she was able to easily kill that demon that she couldn't take before she was turned in Nightmares...it wouldn't make any sense if she just got regular vampire strength, since it had already pretty much been established that Slayers are stronger than most vampires. As for the soul thing, since technically it was just her nightmare, I don't think she lost her humanity or anything like that. It seemed like it was just the idea of being a demon that scared her, not the complexities behind it.

There are a lot of doubts in BTVS, because the storyline is so complex.
I don't think there's one right answer.

Another thing with me, I don't consider her being resuscitated as an act of her being brought back to life.
She was only unconscious, even though they said that she was dead twice in the show.
The thing is, unconscious means alive.

I think she had Slayer strength, plus vamp strength.
We already know that vampires can retain the physical abilities of their human counterparts. (One example being the vamp that could do karate. Forget which season, but he was a better fighter because he had been fit as a human.) On top of this, Buffy was easily able to defeat the "Bad Man" as a vamp when she couldn't as a Slayer, so I think it's safe to assume she has ADDED strength as a vamp.

I have always kinda thought of it like this... I figured she would have been extra powerful because of who she was in her human life.

The risen vampire would retain all of the normal physical attributes of whatever human that they occupied, like the gymnast at the beginning of Season 3, or the Tae Kwon Do student in Season 7, as well as whatever mental attributes that they might have had. For example, Drusilla was still a psychic as a vampire, and Luke, though a giant and far more powerful than a normal vampire, probably wasn't the smartest blood sucker around.

Buffy's Slayer powers weren't due to physical training or conditioning, they were a supernatural enhancement resulting from a spell cast by the Shadow Men at the dawn of humanity, and as such would only apply as long as the Slayer was alive. In Buffy's case, when she died, those powers became dormant, like an animal going into hibernation. When she was awakened, resuscitated, or resurrected, the power awakened with her. In life, Buffy is the, or now, A, Slayer. In death, she was just another girl, dead far too soon.

Well, obviously Buffy did get her 'powers' from the shadow men but she did also do a lot of training so would have still probably been pretty strong for a girl of her size.
I think it would have been cool if it when Buffy was turned she would have both vamp and slayer strength but looking at the technicalities behind it all it probably means she would just have regular vampire strength.

Well, All I know is when she tried to fight the monster from Billy's nightmares the first time, He was too strong for her. After Buffy became a vampire she was able to over power him. So I'm guessing that as a vampire her strength was doubled. That's the way it appeared to me. I love Vampire Buffy even if I shouldn't. <3

To take one example. Season 4:
Sunday and her gang beat Buffy the first time they met. It's not allways just about physical strength.

It wasn't addressed in the episode, but did any of you read 'tempted champions'. I know the books aren't considered canon, but there there was a slayer turned vampire, and she was wicked strong. However, they also implied she was very old and had picked up various fighting skills along the way, so that would also explain her strength.
I personally tend to take the double strenght stance. To come back to the whole 'the first Slayer was made part demon with a spell from the Shadowmen' thing. I don't see why the spell would have to stop as soon as a slayer died? I mean, she wasn't the one who cast the spell, so why should her death influence it at all? If there had only been one slayer at a time (before Willow changed the rules) I would've seen your point, seeing that the strenght/spell sort of 'jumps' from one slayer to the next one, but since Buffy and Kendra/Faith could have slayer powers at the same time, I really think once it was there, the power stays where it is, no matter if the host is dead or alive.

While that indeed makes the best sense from a medical point of view (if she was clinically dead and not just unconscious, CPR should not have brought her back to full health), it's clearly impossible from in-verse. If she was only unconscious, Kendra should not have been called that moment... or we should have had double, triple, x-tuple Slayer lines almost since the dawn of time, whenever a Slayer went K.O. 😉

We have to assume that, in Jossverse physics other than in realverse, CPR does bring back the dead.

And interrupted spells with the main ingredient being smashed bring back the dead, too.

I had a thought about that today. I guess the difference between normal unconsciousness and the one in Prophecy Girl is that Buffy (and every other slayer) could easily shake of a normal unconsciousness, but if Xander hadn't done CPR, she would've died for sure that time. So that's the difference. I guess in the Buffyverse, that's what counts as 'dead'.

I think that THIS is what it comes down to.
Some may argue that the slayer is who Buffy is, but if I can remember right in season 3 when Buffy turns 18 and Giles has to perform that "right of passage" thing where she needs to defeat a crazy vampire without slayer strength.
She did it of course, but her strength was gone, because in the end she's just a normal girl with the same "girl strength" as most of us have.

Although had Joss made it so in time Buffy was turned into a vampire during the series, you'd bet it would be a special case, where she would most likely have both her vampire and slayer strength.
